  1. The problem with MS (Not what you'd think) on Microsoft Says Recovery From Malware Becoming Impossible · · Score: 1

What I noticed in typing this, is that MS is _always_ about 10 years behind where the progress should be. Its now 2006, and XP is a clowny looking thing from the mid 90s. I will say that they sure know how to sell stuff to people. They get an A++ for that, but innovation and quality have never been their forte.

MS Has gotten themselves into a catch 22. Issue: Legacy apps.

The reason they appear to be behind the times, and the reason it takes them so long to get a product 'out the door' is due to the fact they are building in legacy support into their most current operating systems. Apple decided to cut their losses in this, and can thus turn around new releases every year or so, while it might take MS 5 years to get something new out.

If MS decides to discontinue legacy support, they can potentially lose hundreds of thousands of customers. That would be a bad business decision. On the other hand, building a bulky product that people constantly complain about seems to be working just fine, as they still have a firm grasp on the OS market.

Its a general problem in america (and yes, I'm american, and texan at that) where we can't and won't own up to the ability to control our lives. I don't know where it started, but thats a common theme over the past 20 years. I'm curious where the next phase of this is going to go.

  12. Re:One of the problems with WoW on Next World Of Warcraft Raid Dungeon · · Score: 1

This biggest crim you can commit against a gamer is to make them feel like they've wasted their time.

How many raids are truely fruitful for a gamer in WoW at level 60? You don't need the XP, you don't need 90% of the items that even drop.

PvP on the other hand is equally as "regressive." Your hard-earned week of achievement can be wiped out if you go out of town, or if your internet goes down. There is no long-lasting benefit from PvPing, as there is in DAoC. In DAoC, you get a rank, you can't be demoted back to a lesser rank.

Now, of course as an indie, I'm not going to be making a "WoW-Killer" or anything like that, but all these things will be taken into consideration when we develop our next game.

It doesn't find the happy medium. It is like a pyramid, with the middle missing. There is no spot for mediocracy. You have leetsauce gear, or you are a noob.

Every game has its roots. DAoC was a PvP game. EQ was a PvE game. WoW can't make up its mind, so its kinda half-assing it on both attempts.

I think its great for the extra publicity, as it helps us indies get a better grasp on what Joe Public wants and how he reacts to various scenarios.

The whole issue with distributed MMORPGs is the lag factor, as the parent said. You need to figure out which content is where, and that requires a centralized node. That node of course, subject to all the lookups and the likes. Clustered boxes are the closest you can really come to this. Certain zones are on certain machines. If you want to switch zones, you go into a load screen, and then your server connects to the new zone, you get your characater serialized and moved to the new box, and then your client sees the new zone.
