>>>Blu-Ray isn't going to die because it lives in every PS3 that is sold. Even if all the other studios switch (and it will take a lot for Disney to lose face and switch) Sony will continue to offer Blu-Ray content for the forseeable future
One could say the same of UMDs. Sony still support those, right? Plus, this is all based on the fact that the PS3 survives into 2009 or beyond. Again, more uncertainty. What IS certain is that there's an HD player out there today approaching $100. This isn't a religious battle, it's a money battle. The cheaper player/format, storage be damned, will win. Oh, and Wal-Mart helps too.
Bottom line however is closed formates suck. I think that's something we can all agree on.
I'd argue that the lack of exclusives (or dwindling list anyway) is a much bigger reason than price. People bought iPod when they were $500, so price really wasn't a factor there, right?
In the gaming industry GAMES drive sales in the long run, and so far Sony has not made any kind of effort showing gamers how this system is any different than the 360 other than Blu-Ray -- a technology that, I may add, no one actually asked for to begin with. What they asked for was a gaming console with exclusive titles that warranted the lofty buy-in price. Sony has also shown that it's answer to Nintendo is to introduce a motion control PS2 controller 10 weeks before Warhawk developers are set to showcase their wares at E3.
Playing catchup to a GameCube and TELLING consumers what's good for them (Second Life Sony Home, with advertisements!), instead of showing them a product they really want or need and letting them decide for themselves is a massive failure in the making.
The PS2 is still selling admirably; maybe Sony should have bolted a Blu-Ray drive onto that.
it's not running in "big" enterprises. Then, in all seriousness, where is it running these days? I ask out of curiosity, not criticism. Is it enjoying the modest gains that the desktop offering has over the past couple of years? If I use Server, will Steve Jobs do a jig in my front lawn?
Ok, the last one was a corny attempt at humor, but I am genuinely curious.
True. It's like politics. PS3 people are voting on the symbol after a person's name, and Wii people are looking for progressive change (either in affordability or interface innovation). There's a risk with the Wii position, naturally, but the payoff could be huge (for Nintendo, obviously, but also for the gamer and the industry too). Besides, it seems that if you buy a PS3 these days, you get shot.
Sony rushed everything and anything about this console, and now people are literally getting shot for one. With the 360 already entrenched, and the Wii taking the rest of the gamer population (and many more outside it), there is no reason at present to develop for, or purchase this console. Maybe in time that will change, but you only have so long before the fickle mob moves on.
See all the violence? All the mayhem? All the utter stupidity? Get these people off the streets and playing/selling their PS3's, so I can enjoy the Wii launch on Sunday without getting shanked.
Forest thru the tress:
I don't know about anyone else, but my On demand movies load almost instantaneously. I haven't bought a DVD in months. Why? Because I only ever really watch a DVD once before it goes on the shelf; On Demand makes more sense and it costs 3.95. Everyone here saying he's 5 years too early is just focusing on digital downloads from iTunes, et al, and not from Comcast or RCN or whatever. Sure, there will still be people who want to horde their loot, but there were also people who clung to records for a long time too.
"Early adopters have a lot of money. They can afford the thing. And how often has the most powerful console been a total market failure?"
Let me count the ways... 3DO, CD-i, Neo Geo....
So when Sony execs were running around for the past year making bone-headed statements that were so easily disproven it made President Bush look like an idiot savant, they weren't trying to craft the message about the PS3??? I fear for this guy, and the pile of crap he has stepped into. I fear what the PS3 marketing will look like now that they are *really* trying.
I do not like Oracle. I do not like their db. I do not liketheir business practices... I do not like them in a box. I do not like them with a fox. I do not like them in a house. I do not like them with a mouse. I do not like them here or there. I do not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them, Sam-I-am.
And 37,963 of those civilizations are more advanced than Slashdot commenters.
I guess that's not really news...
I always knew this guy was pretty smart.
Just like the Beatles. Oh wait, that's not true at all. Who brought the Negative Nancy?

as interesing (sic) as the search for a Slashdot spellchecker!

If ever the phrase 'take your own advice before talking' was something worth following, that time is probably now.

Only DRM
Yup, the DOJ went industry wide with their search for wrongdoing and found that it was Sony that stunk the most.
That's all; just a Sony-coined phrase that has literally come full circle to describe the very company that used it to begin with.
Better one (from my second prize ribbon-winning science fair project in 2nd grade): Why does a ship float and a potato sink?

Pluto is still the bastard stepchild in this sad, sad story.
because I was starting to get the impression they were a little too focused on all the great music they were putting out lately.
Whew! that they weren't talking about the body spray. Am I right or am I right?

of the $50 deposit I also heard GameStop is taking back the receipts they gave out for the PS3 preorder event earlier in the week.
Someone apply this to HP's phone lines! Well, shoot, wrong kind of leaking.
