Bodhicat has an alternative. I spend my free time reading A German translation of the Lord of the Rings at the local coffee hang-out, Black Dog. When I get tired of reading I can usually find someone to play chess with or have a chat. And its only $1.75 for some really great coffee from a locally owned establishment. Now that is entertainment for nurds.

Can you really use a cell phone by touch? I never have, I have always had to have at least the back light on the keys. A desktop or laptop keyboard, yes, I can touch type on them, but the iPhone is not meant for typing any large amounts of text. Most execs and nurds have several computer/e-mail/text typing devices that they use for different situations. If you want to type your dissertation on the iPhone, good luck.

Does Cupertino have any sort of contact with reality to begin with? The only saving grace of Apple is that once in a while Steve's reality distortion field comes up with a product that people will actually buy and that makes money for the company.

People want to praise him for his wonderful sucesses (Mac, iPod, OS X), but quickly forget the failures (NEXT, Newton, The Cube) I remember seeing the introduction of The Cube on a closed circuit TV at MacWord in 2000 (2001?). I thought it would be the future and savior of all things electronic. Well that didn't happen, but somehow Jobs and Apple have been able to pull out of the dive bombs and keep on flying. What will happen with the iPhone is anyone's guess, for now I am keeping my money in a sock under my bed and wating on that Apple stock purchase.

The media tends to concentrate on problems with the Shuttle, but we forget that there have been minor problems and glitches with any of the prevous manned space programs. We hear about the missions where they had major problems, such as Apollo 13, but even John Glenn (The first American to orbit the earth) had a problem with his heat shield which could have prevented a safe reenty. What makes for a good space program is not that everything goes perfect, nothing ever does (ask Mr. Murphy), but how mission control handles problems as the crop up. The same could be said for any technological undertaking. A good programmer is not one who writes a program without bugs, but one who is able to find them and make the corrections before they cause larger problems.

Both the current U.S. administration and the fundamentalist Muslims that they are fighting think that God is on their side. Its time for people to understand that if there is a God that he/she doens't favor one group, tribe or nation. From evolution we can understand that all humans on earth descened from a small group of about 100 or so pre-humans. We are all one family, why can't we all get just along?

There was no Garden of Eden, there was no snake, there was no apple and there's no such thing as original sin. You don't have to follow the rules of some ancient desert tribe. You are free to make your own decisions as long as they are conducive to a functioning society. Yet the fundamentalists are going oo look at this cage, look at how strong the bars are. Scientists have known that the earth is not the center of the universe for 500 years and that humans evolved from other animals for about 150 years, yet the fundamentalists still insist on living their lives racked with guilt and fear of a vengeful God. Get over it. Make your own decisions about morality and learn to live life. Hiding your head in the sand and denying the reality of science is just plain ignorance.
