My sentiments exactly. The story isn't about the prankster. It's about the idiots that responded. They got exactly what they deserved for sending personal information to a stranger. It's no different than the Dateline stories that were outing people on national TV. Is NBC sociopathic as well?
All the social networking and video clips companies are just leading the charge to the next bust. The business model seems to be:
1) start "social" website 2) grow user base 3) ?? 4) get bought out by Big Company X 5) profit! 6) site dies because it was lame to begin with 7) SUCKERS!!! - Precious Roy
it starts costing them business. People have no right to whine about privacy concerns, then continue to do business with that company. This is quickly becoming the standard American attitude. Americans want everything, but don't want to work for it anymore. Sadly, this attitude continues to work its way into nearly every aspect of American life.
When you do business with someone and give them information about yourself, there is ZERO guarantee of privacy, and none should be legislated. This is part of the cost of doing business. If companies want to guarantee it on their own in order to secure more business, more power to them. THAT is the way things are supposed to work in the U.S and it's up to consumers to drive it.
I'm still waiting for a reasonable explanation as to why my tax dollars should be providing personal laptops to ANY students...not to mention the money need to maintain and replace the ones that will certainly come up missing or sold on eBay.
Elementary and middle school students have ZERO need for a school-provided laptop. There is no empirical evidence of benefit to students or teachers. I don't see any need for computers in school at all unless it's for a computer-related class. They are a convenience, not a necessity. Students should be utilizing their brains, not keyboards. There actually is an entire world out their that runs without the aid of computers and kids need to learn this FIRST. This type of thing is just adding to our dependency on them. Google and Wikipedia are not proper reference material. They can be useful tools in addition to traditional reference material.
I bought a pack of these a few months ago. They don't work in all standard bulb sockets. They seem to work somewhat ok in my hardwired light fixtures, although they don't always come on. I have one in my loft and sometimes it just doesn't turn on. They don't work at all in any of my stand-alone floor lamps.
They worked in my garage door opener, but burned out in a week.
Apple comes out looking good. Instead of wasting time with courts, they offer Creative $100M to STFU. This is a patent on a blatantly obvious navigation method and Creative ends up looking like the cry-baby schmuck. They clearly need the money, otherwise they would never have bothered with going after Apple. Apple says "whatever, here's your f*ing money, losers", and moves on to release the latest & greatest iPod and Creative's lame MP3 player, that no one will STILL know about, finally dies off.
I hope they make good use of this $100M...they sure need it.
What privacy?? Sorry, but kids living at home are not entitled to any privacy except that which is granted to them by their parents.
So, this is where all the privacy cries are coming from. Schools are teaching kids that they have some inherent right to privacy...welcome to the real world, people. There is no such thing as privacy. It is possible to live with a certain degree of privacy, but you will have to give up many of the creature comforts provided by todays technology.
It was done purposefully. The episode is actually pretty funny. SG-1 has had a couple "unknown" futures, so it's almost like each season is ended with the expectation that it may not be back. This past season was an exception.
SG-1 is much like its sci-fi brethren. The major storyline episodes are generally dramatic, but every couple episodes they drop in an oddball comedy. When you think back, this is pretty much standard for sci-fi shows. All the ST series did it, including Enterprise. Even B5 and it's short-lived spin-off did it. Farscape and Firefly are right there as well. SG-A is doing the exact same thing, but I think SG-1 has been doing it a little too much lately. It's almost becoming a farce of itself. I think episode 200 was an intentional acknowledgement of that; an inside joke, even.
I realize you are a troll because no one could possibly be THAT ignorant, but we also have:
1) 1979 Iranian hostage affair
2) 1983 U.S Embassy bombing in Beruit
These were the beginnings of Middle East terrorist organizations specifically targetting the U.S. You can try to blame it on the U.S meddling in Mid-east affairs, but that is a cover-up for the real reason. The fact is, Islam has not progressed beyond the time of the Crusades and anyone who does not follow Islam must be converted or killed. Yes, there was a time that Christianity followed a similar precept, but they finally moved on. Unfortunately, there is no way to win against this type of belief except by killing them all.
I hate to break it to you Bush-haters, but the only thing Kerry could have done to change things is establish Islam as the new national religion of the U.S. You people need to get your heads out of the political trash heap and realize that none of this is about what we've done -- it's about who we are. These people don't care about your political leanings except as a tool to build sympathy for the devil. They would just as soon see you lying dead next to W.
Jobs has lost his magic because the media and rumor mills can't seem to stop themselves from building up imaginary hype?? I am so sick of hearing about an iPhone. It's a dumb idea and it's never going to happen. Get over it already.
WWDC is for developers, not end users, so anyone with a brain should have known not to expect more than what we got -- espcially after the Hi-fi announcement earlier this year. That should have been a big wakeup call to everyone to tone down the speculation.
If anything, I applaud Apple for not feeding into the hype. Maybe Apple does have some killer gadgets coming out, but WWDC is not the proper forum for it.
I agree. I don't see any market for this. The mobile phone market is already saturated as it is. The recent iChat Mobile photo going around is interesting though...a real-time video phone via iSight. There are obvious flaws with the mockup. The major one being that the iSight is on the back of the phone. I still don't think there is any profit to be made from an Apple phone. There is no way the Apple has been secretly working on a phone that can possibly compete with companies that have been doing this for years.
What I CAN see as a possibility is a Bluetooth iPod that can communicate/sync directly with Bluetooth phones.
This may be a poor article submission, but if you read other articles regarding this issue, you will see that this IS the result of backdating options, which is NOT illegal if accounted for properly. Someone made a booboo and didn't adjust the books for the backdating. Therein lies the problem.
There are other oddities when looking over the 8K filings as well. Some of the accounts payable and receivable don't jive. It appears that Apple may been padding their profits for the past several quarters. This is probably related to to huge amount of cash they have. This isn't necessarily illegal, but it can mask the true financial health of the company. This is one of the big concerns when companies hold on to too much cash. If there was intent to deceive investors, this could be pretty bad.
In the end, it doesn't matter if it was intentional or a mistake, the stock price will be affected. On the good side, this will lead to a huge buying frenzy when stock drops below 50.
Actually, this has been an issue with previous white iBooks. Like the current issue, it did not affect everyone. I think the current state of whining on the internet is partly to blame, so it's no wonder we're hearing about it more than before. Plus Apple is more in the spotlight now than it has been since OS X first came out.
All these Apple rumors sites and digg-like sites are controlled by fifteen-year-olds with nothing better to do than complain. It's a different internet these days. Instead of actually calling Apple and explaining their problem, they post loser comments on as many websites as they can. I have no problem spreading the word on possible issues, but some of this is out of control. There are ALWAYS going to be problems with ANY electronic product.
My first MacBook was powering itself on after being completely shutdown and turned off. I made a quick posting on the Apple forums to see if anyone else had experienced it. I didn't go over to digg.com and submit a story about "OMG!! MacBooks are alive!! Everybody run!!! Apple has created MonsterBooks!". I simply took my MacBook back to the Apple store, explained what happened, and was given a replacement on the spot. I updated my posting regarding my replacement and advised anyone with a similar problem to do the same. There have been several posts of people experiencing the same thing.
Apple products come with a 1-year hardware warranty. So, if there is some sort of widespread problem, it will be addressed and it won't cost you a dime. Not every problem requires a revolution. You can get pretty far by contacting Apple and not being an a**hole when explaining your problem.
This type of system is not needed if you raise your children to eat properly. You cannot expect children to eat properly at school if you've been feeding them crap at home. And, if your kid is eating well at home, a less healthy lunch at school really isn't going to hurt them.
Much of this stems from trying to feed children what YOU LIKE instead of what THEY LIKE. Most kids don't like green vegetables: broccoli, spinach, peas, asparagus etc. There is NO REASON for kids to eat foods that do not taste good to them. There are a lot of foods that simply do not taste good to children. There are plenty of tasty alternatives and it's the responsibility of parents to find healthy foods that their children like.
I can't tell you how many nights I had to sit at the table until I finished some nasty food that my mom made for me. That's a power trip and has nothing to do with me eating something that's good for me. In the end, I never ended up eating it anyway and everyone just ended up pissed off.
This article submission is a waste of space and time. If you critize your employer using its own property, you will probably get fired. Props to the CIA actually firing someone. The biggest waste of money in the government today is worthless employees and contractors.
That's foolish. You are supposed to have your passport on you at all times. If you are in a hotel with a safe, you should leave a photocopy of your passport in the safe. You should have also left a photocopy of it with someone back home. You should never leave any original passport/id/credit cards at a hotel, even if it's in one of those hotel safes. You think someone can't get into those?
Only fools walk around anywhere in the world with no ID. If you have no ID, you do not exist and no one will miss you when you "disappear". You are far more likely to be asked/questioned for your ID in Europe than you are in the U.S.
For all the crying in U.S about fascism and privacy concerns, police in Europe have far more power than those in the U.S. Our police also don't run around with machine guns slung over their shoulders either. I'm tired of ignorant Americans pointing to Europe as some shining example of freedom. I enjoy Europe immensely, but their restrictions on freedom haven't changed in 200 hundred years. If you remember, this is one of the reasons people left Europe and settled the New World.
I'm also tired of peons thinking that the government is out to find secretly find out everything about you. Oh no!!! RFID on my PASSPORT!! It's the end of the world!! News flash: THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR PITIFUL LIFE. YOU ARE NOTHING. They already know everything they need to know. You cannot function in the U.S without voluntarily giving up basic information about yourself. The governement needs things like RFID in passports for far less paranoid reasons: 1) because it's a buzzword and 2) the governement full of idiot worker bee's with a union-mindset that can't be trusted to do anything right.
All of you crackpots give the government more credit than they deserve. In fact, I think you are all government agents trying to convince the public that the government actually knows what it's doing. If you know anyone on the inside, you know that it's really a zoo and the animals are running amuck.
You're exactly right. This IS is a holy crusade...started by Islamic extremists. We will continue to marginalize Muslims until Muslims who don't support terrorism start standing up.
If someone who was marginalized ends up joining a terrorist organization, that only proves that the marginaliztion was justified. It blows my mind that you can even attempt to justify it.
Using your reasoning, if a black person breaks into my house and kills my wife, I would be justified in starting an anti-black terror group and randomly targetting black people with bombs and beheadings. If caught, the ACLU would then support my defense and refer to me as a heroic insurgent in the fight against black on white crime.
Sounds pretty absurd doesn't it? That's exactly what you sound like to me.
I personally have no problem with any type of profiling. I oppose discrimination laws imposed on private business. There's no need for them anymore. If you restrict your customer base, you're not likely to succeed. The free market will see to this. Legislating morality and belief is counter to the principals the U.S was founded on. We have too many stupid laws in the U.S...from drinking ages to seat-belt laws to bans on same-sex marriage...it's all absurd. Laws are supposed to protect us, not shackle us.
It's not even that...it's pointless. What exactly is Pirate Bay a champion of? I'm tired of hearing about how no one should have to pay for anything and that everything in the world should be free to everyone. It's ridiculous.
Nothing they stand for matters or affects anyone in a meaningful way. Patents, copyrights, IP, public domain, DRM...who cares?? It's just "stuff" and if it all went away, mankind would continue on.
My sentiments exactly. The story isn't about the prankster. It's about the idiots that responded. They got exactly what they deserved for sending personal information to a stranger. It's no different than the Dateline stories that were outing people on national TV. Is NBC sociopathic as well?

Slashdot needs article moderation ala digg. This article is two days old and confusing considering TODAY'S launch is still on as of right now.

If you ordered the Core Solo model, you will most likely get a Duo.
They already do. It's called the iMac. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Go buy a PC instead.

Don't believe anything on Wiki.
Here's a revelation:
If you don't want DRM, STOP USING ITUNES, a**hole!
Nobody is forcing you to use iTunes. Get a life.
I bought a pack of these a few months ago. They don't work in all standard bulb sockets. They seem to work somewhat ok in my hardwired light fixtures, although they don't always come on. But you can die of a word that is both a noun and an adjective. Every heard of a dictionary, asswipe?
Was anyone else not COMPLETELY annoyed by the pronounciation of "lasso" by the narrator??
