You don't understand the ACA, do you? There were a lot of people that had catastrophic insurance plans they were happy with. The ACA came along and told those people they weren't buying the right kind of insurance, and that they would need to pony up the cash for full-coverage plans because the government said so.
Health insurance is not healthcare. The ACA did nothing to lower costs, create new medical schools, provide scholarships for people interested in medicine, etc. It was simply a way for the Federal government to take over yet another industry via regulatory capture.
Every consider that the modern person just doesn't want to ride mass transit for their daily lives?
Even if it was clean, on time and lacked smelly bums.....why would I choose public transportation when I can more easily and directly have door-to-door services with my own car?
Lucky you. I live in Chicago and it would cost me something like $450 per month to park where I work downtown.
Fortunately our public transit system is pretty good. I leave my car in the garage under my building and either walk 20 minutes to the train, or go to the corner and catch a bus. It's fantastic and it doesn't matter if I'm tired, drunk, high, whatever, it's a safe ride. My workplace is a block from the train stop and it's a 15 minute ride.
Even with the walk I get in to work faster than I would if I drove and parked. Plus, I'm burning like an extra 300 calories a day.
I won't spend $1,000 on a computer because I can build one that meets my needs for less. There is such a thing as "good enough".
I paid about $300 for my Moto X Pure, it does everything I need. I have even done software releases on it using an SSH client. Why would I spend any more than necessary? Just because I have thousands of dollars in disposable income each month doesn't mean I'm okay with pissing it away.
Literally no one has any idea what the long term effect of this kind of thing is going to be.
And how is that any different from normal breeding?
Two healthy adults can produce a less than healthy child.
Children are born all the time with genetic defects. Some defects with minor impacts might go undetected for many generations. So what's the difference between a "natural" defect and one that occurs due to intentional genetic engineering? Besides, if we find a problem six generations down the line can't we just correct it then?
We have never played God; we play human because we are human.
If we weren't supposed to use our abilities to do these things, then we wouldn't have them. It's like complaining that birds are playing God by flying.
I think the fear is that you'll screw something up and produce a human with severe defects. There's also the fear that you won't notice the problem until several generations later. Neither one of these problems is new, so I don't really get all the hand wringing. We still allow humans with genetic defects to breed.
People being afraid of the future and thinking they can stop progress is nothing new. Human reproductive cloning is going to happen. Accept it and move on from there.
We just told the Chinese that we weren't allowing lead in most products solder here any more, and they stopped using lead in those products and manufacturing processes.
There wasn't supposed to be any lead in the paint used for the Thomas the Tank Engine wooden toys, and yet there was.
Bitcoins are a poor investment because you're gambling on something that doesn't really exist.
If Bitcoins don't exist, then how are people holding and trading them? I bought in at $450, it's been a fucking great investment!
And don't give me any of this "no intrinsic value" bullshit. There's a lot of intrinsic value in being able to keep and move money outside of the current banking system.
You don't take tht exact system you have now and give an extra $58,000 to everyone.
What you do is give $something to everyone, remove most benefits (generally excludig medical) and then bump up taxes.
And what do you do about the people who piss their UBI away on things other than food, clothing, shelter, etc. and then need to be supported?
Aren't you still going to have to provide those benefits?
Why spend resources on the underachievers when the overachievers can accomplish ten times as much?
I was in my school district's "gifted" program when I was younger and from what I understand it's pretty common for some people to feel like the gifted kids should fewer resources to help them achieve instead of more. I guess the belief is that you can raise the bottom kids up, but can you?
I would think it would be better to get poor people to stop having children they can't raise properly than to try to correct for bad parenting with a special school.
I really regret contract work not being talked about when I was still a college student. I had never considered it versus a full time position.
After starting to use recruiters to find work I ended up doing a couple of contract to hire deals. I had no idea it was so nice! I bill hourly and get paid weekly. I get to deduct business expenses and have control over my benefits. If I want to take a month-long vacation at the end of a contract I can do so. I have someone to represent and advise me; it's really nice to have a proxy doing the negotiating for you.
If you do it right contract work can be a pretty sweet deal.
Less than forecast is always bad. Companies plan around those numbers and if they don't materialize it might mean some things are going to have to be cut.
Hulu doesn't have commercials if you don't want them. I suppose you could say Amazon Prime Video has commercials, but you can skip them immediately so they don't really count.
I ran out of old content to watch on Netflix maybe a year ago. It didn't help that they lost quite a few shows I watch and didn't have some of the others to begin with. For someone like me it probably makes sense to cancel my subscription and then only sign up for a month twice a year to catch up the few things I would want to see.
I'm also stuck with a 2017 MacBook Pro; an i5 with only 8GB of RAM. After seeing the ridiculous prices and lackluster specs of the latest Pro's I searched for comparable Thinkpads. The P52s looked pretty good.
I'm a server guy and don't need too many CPU cycles or a fancy GPU, but I do need memory to run VM's. Our front-end guys are having problems with their machines not having enough memory (they can't easily test with IE or Edge) and programs like SourceTree are pegging the CPU. I have to spin up Windows EC2 instances for them to use.
Heck, there's a Mexican restaurant I used to go to that has a mural with several topless women! Do a Google search for "Tarascas Chicago" and you can see inside the restaurant.
I don't think I'll ever understand what prudish people have against exposed breasts.
You need to talk to a recruiter in your area. They should have a list of both contract and full-time positions that local companies are trying to fill.
So you're in favor of self-censorship? That people shouldn't be able to express unpopular ideas unless their real-life identity can be harassed or punished?
The fact that my name is attached is precisely why Facebook only gets non-controversial, non-personal content. I only post about things I see out in public, or info about upcoming events or recent news.
I have a diversity of friends and I'm not interested in damaging my "brand" by posting a bunch of personal content for them to see. Just like Hillary I have both a personal and a professional image to maintain.
The person sitting next to me at work has a box mod and takes "smoke" breaks every hour or so. It seems like addictive behavior to me.
The people I know with wax pens and oil cartridges? They only use them during the lunch break.

Everything you can associate with Trump you could associate with Clinton.
I disagree. Hillary said she had a public and a private position. Trump wears his beliefs on his sleeve.
It's the economy, stupid!

I'm pretty sure you can make VOIP calls with it.

These people have an ideal: Women should never be objectified, EVER. (EEEVAAARR).
This kind of thinking really bugs me. The fact is that men and women _are_ objects. That's not all they are, but they are most definitely objects.
Also, both sexes are objectified. Women do it to men just like men do it to women.
Heck, there's a Mexican restaurant I used to go to that has a mural with several topless women! Do a Google search for "Tarascas Chicago" and you can see inside the restaurant.

So? Go buy an individual (or family) plan then. That's what I did when I worked contracts.

A bullet fired at a ballistic trajectory can definitely kill someone when it lands.
A bullet fired straight up isn't going to do much, if any, damage.
I just hook up an Intel NUC running CentOS to a display and an AVR or stereo amplifier in each room.
I'm not a fan of those all-in-one systems that couple the speakers to the receiver with built-in streaming applications.
