Terrorists are no different. Yes, they have the same rights as every other human. No, they aren't 'free to do as they please'. They are free to do all the legal things they want, just as I am, right up until they break the law. Then they must be caught, just as I must.

But this -can- be done without trampling rights. It has been for much longer than I've been alive and it can continue to be done that way. Just because we suddenly have the technologies to trample rights doesn't mean we should.

Duh. It's gonna have at least 4. And since there's a positive dearth of consumer vehicles with more than 4 wheels, this is pretty silly. (Dualies don't count since the sets of wheels are connected and act like 1 wheel with wider traction.)

But at least cars have SOME use for the other wheels other than driving power. Steering, stability, etc.

CPUs only have 1 use: Processing. To state that there are 4 CPUs and all 4 process... Pointless.

This obviously ticked me off from the start and I haven't fully vented about it. At least the market either failed to fall for the hype or couldn't figure out what they hell AMD was talking about.

They would petition and be re-instated, but lose all their money. It was their main payment method, and most of their customers preferred it, so they kept dealing with it... You made me question my view of the GPL for a moment, but a quick Google search reminds me what the real spirit of the GPL is: Protection of the code. The GPL does not (and cannot) provide any more 'freedom of the end user' than the free licenses like BSD, etc. I've heard many, many times that the GPL is not a usage license/EULA/etc. It's a distribution license.

Instead, it promises the end user something different: If someone upgrades the software you are using, and distributes it, you are also entitled to the upgrade. This is more aimed at the developer of the original software, though. It keeps his/her peace of mind that the free code he create for the good of the public will remain free and continue being improved (if it's worthy) long after he/she is gone. That nobody can simply take the code, create a better non-free version with it, and not give back anything.

So the spirit of the GPL is really 'free code stays free' and not 'freedom of the end user.'

So with that in mind, how does preventing code from being used where the user wants fall in line with the spirit of the GPL?

That's obviously correct as far as it goes, but think about open source licensing for a moment. Can you think of anyone who is not fanatical about the license they picked? I know I am. At least if not the exact license, then the spirit of that license.

LT has made it pretty clear that the spirit of the GPL v3 is not the same as the v2 to him, and that's his objection. I definitely agree with that, even though I strongly dislike the v2 as well.

I suspect the real reason he has dropped out of the conversation is because he has no interest whatsoever in the direction of the v3 and the FSF has made it VERY clear that they have no intent on changing the parts he hates. It doesn't help him or them 1 iota to stay, so he left. Smart man.

Virtual Console games are probably priced right because those who want retro games will gladly pay the $5 or $10, but those who don't want them... There's no price low enough that they'd buy them. No matter what.

My nephews for instance... They are half my age and never owned any console before the PSX. They simply will not care about 99.9% of the games before that point. There's a few series that still exist today (Final Fantasy) that they -may- decide they want to try since they are such good games today. But I still doubt it.

I believe their prices are right on the money. They won't make more money by selling them cheaper.

Seriously, if you don't like it, don't fret it. If others don't like it either, they won't buy it, and Nintendo will know. But don't start thinking Nintendo doesn't know what they are doing. Take it 1 step further, though. Sony produces and sells 6 million units. They only sell 1 million games.

Q: What are game producers going to think?
A: That either people don't -like- the games or that they are all being stolen. I seriously doubt they'll think the games aren't liked, when they are selling well on the other platforms.

So Sony now has a huge loss on consoles, poor game sales, and game producers that don't want to produce for their console. This approach hurts them in the future as well as the present.

Simply not buying the console only hurts them in the present.

If Sony tries to get smart and stops selling the console, they've added a third problem for the game producers to see... Unavailability.

In the end it doesn't matter, though, because the happy game-buying customers will far outnumber the disgruntled Sony-haters. (Or DRM-protesters, or whatever you want to call them.)

But it has issues. I have an nVidia card on my home PC. One time, I did a kernel upgrade through Adept's automatic update notice. It trashed the video drivers. Having installed Slackware at one point, I fixed it in about 20 minutes. My family would never have been able to fix it. Another kernel upgrade let the computer unable to boot to the default kernel. And every upgrade after that would have the same problem re-occur. I finally figured out what files to remove and regenerate to make grub not freak out and fixed it... Again, family would have been lost totally.

Windows has had its shared of 'after the update, computer won't boot' issues as well.

In the end, my choice of OS has a lot more to do with intended use than anything else. For web development and other system administration tasks for work, I prefer Linux. For graphics work and gaming, Windows. In fact, it seems to be that for anything technical in nature, I prefer Linux, but for anything entertainment or artsy, I prefer Windows.
