Yeah, if they make 5 billion this year and they couldve made 5.1 billion by squeezing things in a few places, then someone isn't doing their job. Welcome to the life with "The Corporation".

That's always been the nickname for Utah Valley, here in Utah;)
From what I understand, it was given that term because Utah Valley is one of, if not the, highest per-capita consumption of anti-depressants in the United States. Hence, Happy Valley; Seems like a horrible name for a TV series though...

You are disappointed in Google? Are you sure that you understand what their situation/predicament is? They simply do NOT have the option of providing an uncensored search engine in Chine at this time, so it is either a censored Google or no google at all. I don't know about you, but I will take whatever I can get. At least now they have a foot in the door.
We have had SBC Yahoo DSL at home for about 6 or 7 years now. A few years ago when comcast was "upgrading" our cable service for HDTV, their crew managed to cut through the telephone line buried in the ground outside our house, which killed our internet and phone service! I think they train them to do that. In the time it took SBC to come and repair it, we could have potentially switched over to cable?
is this what they were thinking?
Argh i give up! Those conniving small minded cable companies:X
I read TFA, but im still not clear on how they plan on using the radio to target listeners in a way which would be different from the current advertising schemes. Obviously, when you search on google, they can use your query to deliver targeted relevant advertising results. However, with radio, the only information they have is that a quantity of people are listening to a specific frequency. Clearly, I must be missing something. Right?

Languages all have their place(s). Maybe a LAMP setup is better in some places, but writing a "real" webapp in PHP vs. Java seems like a no brainer to me:p I'd go with C++/Java everytime.
Everyone else is of course, free to use whatever they want though;)
Or, why not a completely new language (as the parent originally stated)? I kind of like that idea;)
I can't say anything about Python, but I can tell you RIGHT NOW that "Macromedia Flash" (is it now considered a language?) is not suitable for or geared towards making the best use of my time.
>>I know this is going to sound shocking, but a large number of people don't give a rat's ass about open source or linux. In fact, most don't know what it is. They do, however, like downloading movies for free.
I believe you might be missing my point. Who cares what clients those communities allow or not; The only people using them (in the VAST majority of scenarios and cases) are the people who are illegally downloading copyrighted movies and shit. As in, Joe-Blow-The-Cheap/Dumb-asshole.
Oops, I wrote:

And then you can call me crazy again, but I must ask why we care which clients these "communities" allow or not (since they are underground/illegal, and not really helping the linux/open-source movement, but rather cast a negative light bittorrent).
What is the DHT Layer? I would consider myself as being torrent savvy, but I have no clue what this means.
A little bit of research later...
DHT stands for Distributed Hash Table... DHT is a networking protocol that enhances the scalability and efficiency of decentralized networks by creating a virtual index rather than broadcasting search queries. Decentralized networks that utilized DHT technology are able to search and locate files significantly faster than networks that do not use it.
source (non-authoritative): http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=772
DHT is a layer added on top of the BitTorrent network to assist in Azureus' performance. BitTorrent is a distinct networking protocol, of which is specified by creator Bram Cohen. Anything existing outside of those specifications is not BitTorrent.
source (non-authoritative): http://www.unitethecows.com/forums/showthread.php? t=10991 (So DHT is not part of the bittorrent specification; At least, it wasn't in May 2005, but who knows now...)
So basically, my understanding now is that the DHT Layer is what allows for the decentralization of torrents. Thus, by not respecting the "private" flag, the clients can leech all day without it affecting their ratio. Slap me if I am wrong or missing something, but aren't most (re:99.999%) of these "communities" that care about leechers, ratios, and keeping their torrents to themselves going to be trading/torrenting copyrighted content/material? Call me crazy, but I just have this hunch that this isn't exactly the latest Knoppix torrent. And then you can call me crazy again, but I must ask why we care what these "communities" ban or don't ban?
But then again, this is slashdot where anything that approaches conservative or rational gets modded down by the mob.
Who modded this guy up? As has been discussed 2^oo times before, the editors probably know full well what they're doing, but they do dupes for any combination of the following reasons:
a.) Bring in more advertising revenue, because a large portion of the slashdot crowd (myself included) read these dupes, having at least some idea that we're reading a dupe.
b.) People still click on the dupes, generating additional revenue for Slashdot from the advertisers that pay by-the-click.
c.) Some people have claimed before that they 'like the dupes', since they might have missed it the previous time around. (I guess they can't click on yesterdays news? Don't ask me to explain their logic...i dont understand it either.)
What amazes me the most about this whole dupe phenomenon is that there is not enough technology news that they already have their hands full. Another possiblility would be that they must have at least 1 (or preferably 2) articles related to google and/or microsoft everyday.
I found an interesting article here from 2004 about the future of face transplants. Apparently they take the face off of a cadavre and then surgically put it on a live person, which makes sense, but as another poster referenced, reminds me of something like silence of the lambs. But if I had to make the choice of having no face/seriously f*d up face, or someone else's...I can't even be sure what I would choose:o
450$ per student? Is the DOD still using 5000$ hammers as well? This is just as simple as putting in a DSL line for the FBI and a VPN box.
You're dreamin' pal. There is no way it would be that simple to enable the FBI to monitor the activity of any user on schools network. Maybe that's all you need to VNC into YOUR home machine, but they're talking about a fairly complex system, because they must be 100% positive they are monitoring the right people and the system would also need to be very flexible in order for it to be widely deployed into the diverse permutations of networking environments found in institutions of higher learning throughout the united states.
I am not even aware of anyone attempting to compete with them for this market. They definately should have done more market research and found at least a few potential customers before they went and dropped big bucks on this project. I know kids in highschool who could have told them that..
in the meantime, maybe they should just let non-profit organizations use it;) now there's a thought.
Parent makes an interesting point. Here is a link a website where one can find additional information and even tab-delimited datafiles of SNPs variation and linkage.
Here is an additional site with even more information and datasets available. I'm going to download these and see what I can find.
Pros:
Cons:
On second thought, I must stop and ask how well this will catch on; I am afraid we'll be doomed to be on the fringe forever.

they needed speed, so raid0 was the way to go. if reliability was their primary concern they wouldve done things differently.

i was asking a serious question :\ why did this get modded funny?
So will this only be used for already sick people, or are we going to have to test for it in sports in the next decade?
On /., the posts stop modding you up when you post the same rubbish into the discussion of every article, my little troll.
