Remember that today's iPods do store video as well. Get some third party software (twenty dollars?) and you can rip DVDs to watch on the go. That's sure to fill up 60GB pretty quickly if you were devoted.

Also another reason why the PSP's video capabilities are ridiculously unnecessary.

How about a WoW jar - every month, put the money he would have spent on a subscription into a jar (make sure he uses $1 bills/pound coins/whatever) and see how quickly it builds up. Keep it next to the computer. Every time he gets the urge to play again, he'll see the jar, and be reminded!

    Every little helps.

Whoo hoo, darling, there are other replies to this story, and it's been made quite clear that the speeds mean nothing in terms of direct comparison.

Also, has nobody pointed out that it'll be DAMN hard to squeeze out the full power of the PS3/360 with those horrendously awkward multiple cores and fancy doo dahs and etc?

Maybe moreso in the US, I happen to live in the UK where healthcare is more evenly distributed amongst the population, because of the NHS.

This said, we still have private healthcare, though it's obviously more expensive. More expensive than free!

Actually, that raises some interesting questions.

If things did get way over the top here, surely then becoming stronger would need not investment of time, but investment of money? Suddenly, how strong you are depends on personal wealth, not upon personal dedication!

A vaguely scary thought. Though it might cut down on muggings quite significantly.

OLEDs. That's organic light emitting diodes, for you, and they're the latest in display technolgy. They've were discovered in the late 80s and research has been making them more efficient and robust since.

Hate to sound like an advert for them, but after having to compile a presentation showing their benefits I do have to say the applications are pretty astounding. Much more efficient, higher contrast, faster refresh rate, and a lot cheaper too. And they (well, PLEDs, a specific type of OLED) can be printed out onto laminated sheets using inkjet tech, meaning paper thin screens. Wallpaper that shows videos! Roll up TVs!

Kodak already have made a camera, seen the screen myself, rather impressive looking stuff. However, they're being a bit nazi-ish with the patents, and we all know how good Kodak cameras are (not very).

Oh yeah, because evidently the US is the only country on Earth.

Not all countries in the world have the vast amounts of land that the US does to just chuck things around. Sure, say, Canada does, or Russia, or Australia, but what about say, the Netherlands, where the density of population is absolutely massive, the suburbs practically never end.

Here in the UK, it's either suburbs, villages, or farmland, too, and we've got a 60 million strong population. Occupying an incredibly small chunk of land. WE have a landfill problem.

Haha, you've clearly never been to the place!

The place where Number 6 stayed is actually a very small building, the filming inside his house was in a studio in London. The real life building is, suitably, the Prisoner shop, where you can buy all kinds of paraphernalia to do with the series - and the only permenant tribute to the series in the village itself (that day visitors can see anyway, if you stay there then one of the TV channels plays 2 episodes of the series every night).

Other bits of interest include the Green Dome (now erm, a brown dome due to the copper oxidising) which is an art gallery, and the old person's home which is the Portmeirion Hotel - very prestigious place, I believe, they do weddings quite a lot.

If you want to stay there, you'll have to book plenty in advance, though. And pay an arm and a leg. If you ever get the chance, and you're around North Wales, I highly recommend visiting for the day. It's a truly surreal experience.

  10. Re:The Best Show of All Time on The Prisoner To Be Remade On U.K. TV · · Score: 2, Interesting

Probably one of my favourite shows too. Though, I'm probably one of the only ones of my generation to truly admire it, which is a pity, considering it really has that same lasting appeal that say, Clockwork Orange has. I still wear my "I will not be pushed, stamped.." shirt with pride when I'm out and about.

As a family we stayed in Portmeirion every year, often in different houses, and to be fair, if you take that out of the equation, it ceases to become The Prisoner. The location was perfect: completely out of odds with what you'd expect, a beautiful mediterranean village in the middle of nowhere in North Wales. Let me tell you, the weather is often quite beautiful there, as well. It was surreal, unusual, and contributed to the feel of the entire series, the eccentricity of it all, the removal from any kind of current social context, making it equally applicable throughout the ages (again, see Clockwork Orange).

And besides, the entire point of remaking the series in a modern context is entirely contrary to the point of the Prisoner: you remake it and you cheapen it, you make it become a fad or a brand rather than a unique point of history (let's face it, the second episode makes a reference to the fact man hadn't landed on the moon yet!). If you want to preserve the legacy, make your own drama rather than ruining another.

To quote the series itself, "my life is my own".

Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,

Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,

And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
