I agree that you should do what makes you happier - when you're starting your career you want to open up options, find good mentoring. Later, if you're good at what you do, you can find the high paying jobs.
I'm a Perl contractor, although I started off as a C programmer. While I'm not a fan of.NET it is very popular and there's unlikely to be a shortage of work in that field in the short term. Good Perl programmers are hard to come by, though. I've done well for myself as a result.
What is your passion? What interests you more? Explore those questions and you will find your own answer. Remember, what you get paid early in your career is of lesser benefit to you later in your career than the experience you will be given.
That's what I don't understand about evolution. In theory, if it takes many many years to evolve from one physical form to another then surely remnants of every combination in between the two forms should still exist?
Take human race for example, you have people with skin colour A and skin colour B. Then hundreds of years later you have many individuals of mixed race with varying skin colours between A and B. To me this is evidence of evolution.
But then you have dolfin A and human B but no in-between combinations (dolfin with stubbly legs) then surely this demonstrates that evolution can't have happened? Why the integral split between two physical forms with no inbetween? Even in presidential elections you have independants and small parties in between the two main parties!
The tech friendliness of UK politicians has been in the news of late. It seems that part of reaching out to younger audiences involve some adeptness at interfacing with the internet. However this isn't just in websites, and lately has involved YouTube somewhat.. but politicians have to be careful. Tech-savvy youth don't respect politicians that enter the technology arena just to score points, they have to contribute positively in some way!
When I ask people in London to turn down their iPods they say "how can you hear it? I can barely hear it myself!" followed by (depending on race, usually) varying levels of verbal assault followed by threats of physical assault. It's not good enough to expect average Joe to consider people around him; companies know this and exploit this fact to produce cheap but low quality goods that harm the environment (even the audio space around us).
Just as it is not okay for a company to dump pollutants in a river surely we can expect companies not to dump cheap leaking headphones into the auditory environment that few of us can easily escape.
I saw the video, and boy it looks messy!! Now if Microsoft makes the case easy-to-open and allows one to easily unplug the heatsink then the big question is.. is the heatsink dishwasher safe??
Furthermore.. I wish someone would class-action sue Apple for emotional distress to public transport users. It is not Sony headphones I hear leaking like sieves. It is those cheap-and-nasty white iPod headphones that seem to pump about as much noise out as they do into the ears of the listener!
Like a chess player that must see more moves ahead to succeed, the intelligent human sees the consequences of his/her actions more clearly than the one that refuses (or can't) think so deep.
Naturally, when faced with people who don't care about the consequences of their actions, the human with foresight (or intelligence) can only feel disheartened at the plight of the world when faced with people that lust after short-term solutions to please themselves.
Why do you think even Hawkings has thrown his hands in the air at the world's future?
If the law wasn't so f&%#ed up I would totally support data retention. Catching criminals, perverts, and offenders is something I encourage and stand behind.
However, the RIAA has too much legal muscle. They abused society with their monopoly on physical recording formats. They lost that battle. Coming into the game late and charging a fair fee for songs on-line is too little too late - will they refund us the monsterous charges for times past? While politicians idly stand by and allow RIAA to abuse society through lawsuits there is no good reason to preserve data for these sadistic creatures.
Many arguments are out there for and against Linux as a real-time embedded operating system. But with embedded processors getting more powerful and there is growing popularity with the Linux kernel anything that makes the job of an embedded developer easier (and standardised) is a good thing.
I believe online poker is quite popular with woman; they are able to play it anonymously without the feelings of intimidation they would probably receive in a face-to-face environment. There are so many egotistical overbearing men in real life is it any wonder that online anonymity would be popular with girls, from dating sites where men can't grab their asses, to online gaming where they can pretend they are men..?
In spite of America's failings (the most obvious one about letting citizens own guns for the purpose of schoolyard shootings) I have to admire the balls Congress has in this situation. They just decimated the share value of a number of online gambling companies!
Too often governments fear bringing corporations down to size. There are a number of unethical industries that need to be nipped on the reproductive organs and it WILL mean a loss to the economy in terms of corporate valuations. Lately banking, telecommunications, and oil firms are just taking individuals and countries for a ride. The only ones who can stop it (the Governments) are the very same ones that profit in the back pocket from the illicit activity.
It takes a real man to lead a religion and not abuse his power. It takes a real government to lead a country and not abuse its power.
The truth is a LOT of personal information of ours is stored in computers. Some of it is benign. Some of it is kinky. Some of it could put our financial, social, and medical lives at risk!
In this circumstance we are talking about someone who divulged information of a sexual nature - but google can do this too by matching gmail address cookies with search phrases.. scary!
Steve knew crocodiles and snakes - he was famous for this. I don't recall hearing much about his marine acumen, though. So it makes sense that he died working in an unfamiliar environment.
The time that he had his kid in a crocodile enclosure didn't worry me - that's like a construction worker taking his kid on site, or a fisherman taking his kid on a boat. Fathers are allowed to look after their children in the environments they know best, and what is dangerous to one person, is not dangerous to another who knows the environment.
"First off, Mac users on average pay more for their computers, are self-selected because they tend to know more about technology than your average PC buyer".

Ooo scary what will happen if I flick the autopark switch while driving!!
What if I pull the handbrake while driving on the freeway? Or shove the car into reverse? Or suddenly turn the steering wheel left??
I think the previous poster should have his transmission, brakes, and steering removed from the vehicle as they could cause serious injury if misused while on a freeway!
I guess one thing phishing sites get is accurate information. After all, if you're computer-savvy you might not enter information into the site. But if you're not, you're likely to enter correct information.
Perhaps someone can create a charity web site, where you submit the URL of a phishing site, and then it goes and submits millions of randomly generated username/password combinations to the phishing site?
Would be relatively simple to create, just web-scrape for the words/user(name)?/ and/pass(word)?/ and submit values accordingly.
At least then the phishers won't altogether have a super simple ride.
Perhaps a bunch of volunteers could run such a website for counter-attacking phishers.. at least until the feds shut each phisher down.
The whole thing of being finger printed and retina scanned by the $%@wipe American government is disgusting. What gives that country the right to index everybody who needs to get a hub connection via the States?
I really don't want to visit the states or even fly via Los Angeles, the international hub airport purely because I do not want to be biometrically scanned, especially by a dangerous nation so willing to give George Bush (the communist) their support.
Interesting the comment about flying from Ireland to the US and paying for the priviledge of being extra scanned.. In Australia any new major roads are now toll roads, built and run by private industry. In fact council parking meters and the associated fines will soon be owned and run by private industry. And guess what, Australian banks make more income from penalties than they do in account fees!!
We are in a new world where security and integrity are no longer important. Instead, creating industries and controlling individuals is important!
Governments are not interested in supporting the people, instead they are selling out the people to private industry! Yet is any nation paying less tax as a result of being sold out?
One word: DRM

I don't mind the joke; and I can't wait for the PS3 to come out to the UK. I'm a big playstation fan!
How many of those "celibate" men do you think are celibate?

I simply won't buy an iPod because I see Apple being as evil as Microsoft. Or the RIAA for that matter!
That's the truth.

If all slashdot readers can AVOID the temptation to visit the utube site I'm sure the company would much appreciate it!
