"Oh, and the report's figures were based on the special rates that Microsoft gives Councils just to make sure the short-term budget look worse -- £58 for a Windows license as opposed to the normal £100."
The ACTUAL quote is:
The council gets a steep discount on Windows licences through a broader Education SELECT licence arrangement, paying £58 for a Windows XP licence compared to roughly £100 for OEMs. "Accounting for corporate instead of Education SELECT licences would have added nearly £50,000 to a Windows upgrade project," iMpower found.
Most corporations, companies big and small don't buy OEM licenses for Windows for goodness sake! They USE a Select Enterprise license! Why? Because it saves them MONEY.
I LOVE the amount of half truths some people use to bash Windows/Microsoft.
All of our research shows that price is a barrier. They might say it's not the ultimate barrier, because they've been charging people, but our research suggests that it is a barrier.
And they price the device itself into the stratosphere?
Holy double talk batman!
The "free" online service Sony provides is already showing not to be really good, with a LOT of developers complaining that it was easier to do there own online services than use the framework provided by Sony.
Point Microsoft
Developers are already saying the hardware platforms are close in performance, very close, with props going to Microsoft for more memory and much easier development.
Point Microsoft
The blue ray drive in the PS3 has been killing production of other blue ray players, and quite frankly it hasn't even been close to deciding yet the victor over DVD if there ever was one. Why shove it down someones throat and increase the cost?
Point Microsoft
LIMITED motion control that replaces force feedback/rumble, and then to not let developers know rumble was going away till months and months into the development cycle? Thats not a positive in any developers book.
Better formfactor?
How so? PS3: about 13.5" x 3.25" and 11 lbs, versus Xbox360 about 10.25" x 2.5" deep at 7.7 lbs. hell the PS3 is LARGER than the original XBox that everyone was complaining was too big!
Point Microsoft
Do you guys sell any you know CURRENT games? I don't see much on your list that either hasn't been out for a long while, or is so obscure as to be non-existant.
OpenGL is close to what Direct3d offers, but Direct3d is offering a LOT more than OpenGL currently can. Even the latest additions to OpenGL do not bring it to what Direct3d 9.0, let alone 10.0 offer
Now if you want to include the fact that the DirectX suite has a tonne more functionality than just Direct3D, like DirectSound, DirectPlay, DirectInput, DirectDraw, there is no way in heck that OpenGL can compete with it. DirectX is exactly why developers have made the move to it (including Carmack), you don't have to worry about all those things like sound drivers and engines, network stack plug-ins and the like.
Compare Direct3d to OpenGL all you want, but before attempting to FUD, at least know your facts.
Until Linux offers a similar all in one API for game programming, and until Linux users actually go out and pay for the software (read about Carmack's tracking of Linux SKU's for Quake sales), then there is no way in hell any developer interested in making money is going to focus the time and resource to make a portable game, espeically for the Linux platform.
Other AV products, especially the better ones out there like Trend, Sophos and others don't have any problems working with the API's Microsoft has provided for Vista to date.
In fact Trend and several other companies have commented on the ease of use of Microsoft's new API for antivirus, and especially the close integration with Sercurity Center.
Dell sells in two weeks what Apple sells in a year. Corporations, and HUGE ONES, base their hardware, from servers to desktops to laptops on Dell.
No they ain't fancy, but they do work, and work quite well (this post brought to you via a Dell D620).
It's fanboi comments like this that make the Apple Religious laughing stocks.
They are coming to flood Slashdot with all kinds of comments.
I for one agree. There really is no difference between a Mac and any PC now. It's all the same hardware in a slightly fancier case that costs you a bit more than a not so fancy case.
Right now Apple's hardware is really limiting as it does not have near the flexibility for a BIY or allowing for a good margin of tweaking.
I REALLY don't know how you define lead the market.
1.) Largest install base by huge margin (Microsoft)
2.) Largest sales year over year (Microsoft)
3.) Largest OS market cap (Microsoft)
So just how do you define market leader...
The Mac hasn't seen any revolutionary updates since the introduction of MacOSX. Before that it was the introdcution the Mac operating system years before that.
People in glass houses shouldn't thorw stones... when was the last time something revolutionary came out of the Linux world for desktop or server OS's that impacted the world?
Honestly, so far you have posted pure FUD, without any real access to the facts.
Microsoft Windows XP Sales Exceed 17 Million Copies Just Over Two Months After Worldwide Debut
Competitors that don't fear Microsoft eventually don't exist. It's been proven time and time again since Microsoft entered the market.
I went from over 500 Opeterons to just over 400 Xeon 5100's and got:
Better peformance
Better power utilization
Better BTU consumption
And last but not least... saved some cash...
Which Microsoft is not only aware of, but they have a special surprise in store for the people who did so...

I've never noticed it on my Zune either. Thus where exactly is the problem with the Zune's DRM???
And then talk about loving the iPod.
Pot --> Kettle --> Black
iTunes anyone?
Or the EU for that matter...
Actually the Xbox 360 number is closer to 73%.
Now mind you Sony actually INCLUDED PS2 hardware in the PS3 to play back PS2 games...
Microsoft does it via software emulation.
Looks to me that Sony has some serious issues if they cannot get PS2 games to work on PS2 hardware...
This Sony PR flak says:

And Linux supports none of what I need it to do.
Windows does, and Windows Vista, thus far, has done it well
Linux isn't always an option.
DOH! Yeah I forgot about SDL.
Except for the fact it's where DirectX 4 was today...
Do you guys sell any you know CURRENT games? I don't see much on your list that either hasn't been out for a long while, or is so obscure as to be non-existant.

When is the last time you saw a picture of Google's operation center or data center?
How is 10 million Xbox 360's sold by the end of 2006 not impressive?
Of those 9000 laptops I can see:
About 25 that have been dropped, water damaged or otherwise user destroyed.
Two that had unexplained video problems
47 that have had battery issues (not holding charges typically)
14 that have had the locking mechanism on the front damaged.
Still looks FAR under the 20% number you are giving and I have a much larger install base.
Last year we bought almost 9000 D610's. Know how many OOTB failures? Less than a dozen (11 if I am not mistaken).
How is that any different than Dell being different from Apple by offering Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Linux?
Are you serious?

Apache isn't an OS, and last I checked all servers don't run Apache in the marketplace. Not to mention Apache also runs on Win32 as well.
0 2/01-07xpmomentumcespr.mspx
Are you SERIOUSLY basing your Server numbers on Apache usage?
As for your thinking that XP was a slow seller:

Enough said on that topic.

Windows' market in both the desktop and server markets continue to grow.
Enough said. That alone, considering they own over 92% of the desktop market, and over 55% of the server market makes them VERY relevant.
People said 2000, XP and Windows Server 2003 wouldn't be big sellers as well, yet XP sold well over 7 million copies in its first WEEK of sales.
