    That's the crux of the issue isn't it? What is the cart and what is the horse? If Microsoft is the horse, then is the government putting itself before the horse by changing to an open standard that the horse could drink from if it's led there?

    Which brings up the old saying, you can tell Microcoft how to get better, but you can't make them think. Or something like that.

    Perhaps you missed the joke? Running a bunch of virtual servers is like dividing up one machine to do different tasks. A Beowulf cluster is joining several machines to do a single task. So as I see it, a Beowulf cluster of virtual machines is an exceedingly worthless use of both virtual server software, and Beowulf clustering. Someone would be much better off leaving the system alone, or using a mainframe.

    I don't think Mainframes will come back in a big way. I forsee virtual servers becoming much bigger, as RDP and VNC protocols get more handy too.

    Plus, just imagine a Beowulf cluster of virtual servers!

    We're getting ever closer to the perpetual motion machine, just 25% energy savings to go ;-)

    Seriously though, I'll look forward to seeing this new chip in production, since more energy efficient chips means less waste heat, and thus quieter computers with fewer fans. I'll trust it when I see it, I'm not so swayed by a company that is still just a "startup" probably looking to get a boost to its stock price by anouncing a breakthrough.

    Vista Security - I sincerely hope that's not going to become another famous oxymoron like previous Windows releases. Remember how XP was the most secure operating system ever until a LAN flaw was found, then later Blaster made XP SP1 default security pointless?

    If Vista's default installation isn't cracked wide open by a worm in the first 90 days, then it will be a victory for Microsoft.

    I second this technique. I use VNC and can take a 233MMX cheap laptop with me to get almost whatever I want done while on the road. When there's no spot to plug in the laptop, I just pop my USB key into a willing computer online, and open my my VNC.exe viewer file and plug away.

    I've not considered this before, but if there was an authentication scheme for VNC using a unique key on a USB drive, plus a password, then even if there's a keylogger on the computer you're using VNC on, it won't be able to connect to you again when you've moved on.

    I may have to yield to your geek cred, but explain how a battery contains "electron momentum"? My understanding is that electrons build up in the battery, so that there is a difference in charge, that once a circuit is available, the electrons flow to the positively charged end of the ciruit, providing power to the device.

    I can't say for sure but I'd guess Windows 95. It's the only OS that asks "Where do you want to go today?" and nothing else would make sense for a car.
    "Humanity to others" just doesn't seem likely, especially in an SUV.

    Is MS supposed to pay itself for the right to set its search engine as the default?
    A possible solution is to let someone pick from a list the first time an Internet search is done, and include Yahoo, Altavista, and Google as some alternatives.
