Hardly, Had intel's new stuff beat AMD by a significant margin I'd be far more inclined to get some. As it stands we (my company) have been using AMD almost exclusivly (except for some ultrasparc...) for the last 2 years. We see no reason to change ships over such a small edge, considering how long it took Intel to come out with anything that was really competitive with AMD's K8 systems. Totally unimpressed by thier results. I really hope some people at Intel got fired or sent to work on Itanic III instead. Until then, I'll let the Intel "fanboys" have fun in 32bit single-threaded land while our servers chug along doing thier fancy 64bit multithreaded work that intel seems to not think actually gets done out here in the "real world"....
Ok, so some of us are "stubbornly" clinging to AMD? Intel had what, 5 years to top K8 and 5%-10% better speeds (in SOME benchmarks!) was the best they could manage? I'll stick with AMD thanks, Intel totally underachieved on Core Duo despite what most casual observers may think.....
If its so liberal that you'll never notice its there, by all means copy some of your media bought with itunes onto another medium/platform and get back to us about how well it works. I'll be quite pleased to hear that apple has fixed the earlier problems I had with trying, and that I can once again spend my money with thier service...
Im sure both will be DRM-encumbered, and while the apple one will probably be quicktime-centric in some way I'm sure the amazon offering will be windows bases and require WMP in some form.
No thanks. Until they sell me a non-drm'ed movie download I can watch with xine/mplayer on my Solaris/Sparc desktop, I'll stick to the pirate bay...
Is anyone surprised? USIV and T1 are by far Suns big cash cows. While I'm typing this at an USIIIi powered workstation, and would love a simple upgrade, I cant say that this upsets me in the least. I'd far rather Sun's R&D go into thier higher-end stuff than entry-level stuff, since it will push the current "high end" crap down to the level that us mere mortals will be able to get it!:-D
For the gals: Just show up. Us guys in IT will be more than happy to have some women around.
For the guys: Dont try and hit on the women, and they will hang around more often and for longer.
This all seems pretty obvious.
Who said the money wasnt being spent wisely?
Things like sealing the roof of the high school, buying pens, upgrading from a lab of macintosh LC II computers, things like that are what the federal money got spent on last year. If that DOE money was gone, the local taxpayers would be flipping the bill for those items. It wasnt cheap.
I cant count the games of starcraft I've lost because I couldnt activate all the unit abilities quickly enough through the hotkeys and such....
It would be nice if RTS's had some meta-level "ai strategy for my own stuff" setting, so that you could set your units to auto-use the killer special abilities (or whatever) while patroling on guard duty instead of the default wimpy attacks (or whatever)
Lame.
Dead lame.
So its going to be like every other pay-to-get-downloaded-games service out there?
Except from a known corrupt vapourware company?
And, like the others, only run on wintel?
Yawn.
I'll believe that infiniumlabs actually produced a product when I see it in the store with a pricetag and a demo unit functional next to it... until then, its smoke and mirrors.
While I completely agree 100% with your statements about how the vast majority of US Govt Spending being a complete waste, you seem to miss a key point of the only-half-serious-analogy I was making.
Given a situation with percieved limited resources, the so-called anarcho-capitalists would advocate horde behavior and thier own personal "survival" over all other things. Even if said island was littered with food, a few of those anarcho-capitalists would likely resort to social issues like "rock meets piggy's head, conch goes to me now" rather than some paradise of living together which they all seem to think would somehow result from social values which run completely contrary to cooperation and peace. By definition anarcho-capitalism is all about me smashing your face with the nearest blunt object if you have what I want, and since there's no government your only result is to try and physically stop me yourself....and that is where the fun begins.....
I've used the "island" only-half-serious analogy before to demonstrate the ills of extreeme social models (marxism fails under the analogy as well, for example, tho for differing reasons) without people having a problem understanding that it was just an analogy, and usually people see rather quickly how $THEORETICALPOLITICALSYSTEM often fails when put to the microcosm test.
As for established governments going to war for useless rocks, I wish you were wrong. I dont support that behavior in the slightest, however I also feel that war isnt needed to maintain society. Its beyond the scope of this post, but personally I feel that participation in ANY society should be voluntary so if all the $WHATEVERISTS want to go do thier own thing, they can.. and best of luck too them but I reserve the right to not be surprised when most of them end up killing/maiming each other because they thought there was only 2 pineapples left and never learned how to share.....
Nobody suggested deathcamps or anything of the sort... just the oppertunity for all the anarcho-capitalists to see how thier social model actually works when implemented. The stalinists you mentioned got thier chance, didnt turn out so great.
I dont care about what -feels- extreme, as you put it. I care about what is correct, like you suggest. I simply feel that the "extremes" of anarcho-capitalism and complete-state-dominance are both "incorrect".
And people here call me nuts when I suggest slashdot is crawling with Austrian-School anarchist whackjobs..../me rolls eyes.
Take all these "anarcho-capitalists" and put them on a desert island for a week... the one left alive after that week probably wont be an anarcho-capitalist anymore.../me is center-seeking and dislikes all extreemes.
The differance, in theory at least, is that a government agency like the RSA or NASA is accountable directly to the people, whereas John.Q.Internet-Billionare is accountable only to his creditors, and if he's -really- inept possibly his local police.
This just in! British secret agent lauches into orbit on an emergency launch of china's Shenzou space vehicle on a joint mission to combat the orbital battlestation of new supervillian!
On a slightly more serious note, am I the only one who is weary of the "private" exploration of space, where the projects are controlled by individuals/companies rather than by the people as a whole? I mean, yeah its great for scientific advancment and all.. but the potential for abuse seems pretty severe....
I agree, its very upsetting. I'm sure MS will pay just to maintain apperances (again, not like they'll even notice a petty 280 million...) but if they just didnt pay... not refused to pay, but just didnt pay and didnt explain the non-payment.. the EU has very small teeth going after a corporate entity, and especially a foreign one...

I wonder how business in europe will manage to live without the new important features in windows vista!g horn_RSoD.png comes to mind as one of the more important features we need to get to market asap!

I seem to recall that sun still pitches that "100% binary compatibility" thing ?

A completely valid point, the converse of the original premise can be equaly valid :-)
I just wish it was valid more often ;-)

Hey, if it works and it turns out to be fun, who cares? .. then I wont use it, no sweat off my back.
If it doesnt work, isnt fun, or is vapourware

...but .. stewart is "for real" a bit on the left, and colbert is only "fake" on the right .. ? .. I get it now .. yes, excellent plan!! :-D
OOOOHHHHH!!
I agree, this was intended as a serious comment.
plan on voting for the Stewart/Colbert ticket in '08 !
Its with the guys who translate his whispy watercolour looking art into more draw-a-2nd-time-able chars....
