  1. My worst job on Ask Slashdot: What's The Worst IT-Related Joke You've Ever Heard? · · Score: 1

I worked tech support for a stationary company that wanted to expand into computers. It was a family business, with the father giving a department to each of his kids. They were not a 'loving family unit'. Each department was a kingdom, and territory was fought over tooth and nail. So to order a computer for someone, I would have to order the base unit from the computer department. Any additional hardware like video cards and mice through the service department, and any software through the stationary department, which would only put in one order per month, no matter what. And naturally, if it took a whole month for the entire computer to get assembled, it was my fault.

  2. Icon II on Google Patents Staple of '70s Mainframe Computing · · Score: 2

I used to service Icon II's which used a primitive form of QNX. When the hard drive filled up, it would start deleting old files. In a school, the oldest unmodified file was usually the master password file. Since these systems didn't have a built in root login, this means they were self bricking.

  8. Only efficient in the south on Selling Incandescent Light Bulbs As Heating Devices · · Score: 0

I can remember reading a study about half a year ago that concluded that low heat output lightbulbs are only energy efficient in areas where the climate is warm in the winter months. The heat released in the winter is more energy efficient (only very slightly but still it's on the plus side) than running a low heat light bulb (LED, CF) and generating the lost head by traditional methods (electric heat, heating oil, natural gas, etc). It might be more "green" to just switch light bulbs with the season.

Still the wrong dictionary. There are many words that 99% of the English speaking countries spell one way, that the Americans spell differently. (Colour/color for example) A hybrid dictionary should be created using regional variations of common words for use in brute force attempts like this. I don't speak a word of Portuguese, but It's a pretty good guess that regional spelling variations exist between Portugal and Brazil as well.
