  1. Re:do it for the britishisms! on British Intelligence Inserts Job Ads Into Games · · Score: 1

"I thought she was a sandwich, till she went spare on me hand": Ringo explains to John what transpired at the vending machine in the corner. To go spare means "go berserk"; Ahme had just tried to bite Ringo's ring off! There's a secondary meaning: a girl "going spare" is one who's sexually enthusiastic or available. A deliberate double entendre is entirely possible, especially in light of a long-standing music-hall tradition of having such lines delivered with complete innocence by a straight man (like Ringo).

I think they should have given the buyers of those units say 5 choices from the full catalog of xbox live arcade titles. There are some pretty decent ones up there, such as Small Arms (think super smash bros), Geometry wars (most excellent), Doom, Castlevania, and Assault Heroes just to name a few. Oh and why doesn't this version come with the small hard drive again? i mean you can't seriously tell me that the 20Gb HDD costs 80 bucks still? puhlease.

You want to know why they don't give a basic, intermediate, and advanced version of the same configuration screen (besides the fact that its more work)? Because some "basic" user will enter advanced mode, do something dumb, end up with a black screen, and whine until the cows come home.

I see the same thing myself in the programs I create, and even though sometimes the user may have a valid point, there are also times where I know what I've done is for the best in as many cases as possible.

anywho, all too often you just need to let the advanced users be their advanced selves and figure out how to do it from a command line/text file so if they screw up they more likely know how to fix it themselves.

but lets get past that shall we, as we can well assume that getting used to anything new is going to take time, and for some people it may well take too much time to be worth it. If anything this is a great excercise for the Ubuntu team, as they have the challenging task of making the OS more for everyone.
