In the article they mention evolution as if its some kind of choice that each species made towards their own goals. Last I checked living beings don't have the ability to simply become venomous at will (though thats arguable with some folks), or shift their eyes physically somewhere else to get improved vision (with the exception of those who actually happen to have eyes in the backs of their heads)... it simply doesn't occur that way. Its really just physical or mental "anomalies" that just happen to pass down through generations simply because they survived with those new traits of improved vision, venomous fangs, or some sort of improved intelligence.

In a way thats really whats been happening over the last thousand or two years, only our intelligence has gone up not because of fear of snakes, but from our own kind.

To go a slight step further minutes after posting this, does it seem like more and more programs are doing things for us, perhaps without our knowledge? I take for example Xbox 360 games updater: it tells you there's an update, you update it while looking at a little progress bar, and then its done and you play the game again. I for one really want to know what updates there were, at least the significant ones. It would be nice to know if a certain bug that plagued me before was fixed, or if content was added/changed so I can proceed to take advantage of it.

Are people so content with blind usability of their devices?

I can agree that while something like this could help those who are not knowledgable about such things in the digital world, I wonder if perhaps we should be taking steps back to make sure people actually stay informed of such dangers.

For example, I'm creating the front-end for an application and one of the requests was that we build in such things as making sure "male connectors" on parts don't get matched up with other "male connectors", since logically only "female connectors" should work anyway. Now its no real sweat off my back, but it made me think where is the line between common sense and ignorance?

  20. Re:Freedom of Speech trumps DRM on DRM and Democracy · · Score: 1

I believe they are using the term "threatening democracy" as a way to catch your attention much like how Bush does the same for his political actions. Even if the term they use brings much harsher connotations with it than what the reality is, I think they are on the right track.

Look at it this way, from a non-technical person's view point. When said person wants to play music, they play it. When they want to play a DVD, they watch it. When they want to write a document, use email, browse photos, stream internet radio/tv, or chat online, they want to be able to do it in whatever way is more comfortable for them. The problem is, that if each company has their own propriety formats for every single one of these types of media, they are suddenly forced to use that one companies' program to use it. This means they'll have to purchase a license for each one, and all of their friends who want to be able to view the content on their own pc's will have to purchase a license, and so on. This is a GREAT business model... that is if people were dumb enough and rich enough to buy into every single piece of software/mediaware they need to access all possible forms of media. That is exactly what the DRM backed companies believe the common (majority) computer user to be. They think my non-technical friends are lemmings, pawns, and nothing more.
