Personal responsibility does not exclude helping others. A person can take responsibility for himself or herself and still attend to the needs of others.
Additionally, I submit that demanding other people to help you is just as selfish as ignoring the misfortunes of people around you.
How so? Selfishness is a trait associated with immaturity. One would think that claiming responsibility for your actions, good or bad, is a mark of maturity.
I'm on a first name basis with one of the librarians at the local public library. In light of Banned Books Week, we were discussing censorship. He noted that the USA has some of the best anti-censorship laws in the world*, both in strength and legal firmament.
Interestingly enough Franklin also predicted in a speech to the Constitutional Convention that all governments will only end in despotism as the people become more corrupt. A rather insightful individual.
You're correct in assuming austism is a not a single disorder. It's a general term covering a spectrum of disorders. Some autists can function fairly normally in society, some (like a young boy I know) live entirely in seperate realities they create for themselves, and some (like another young boy I used befriended) can't speak and have a hard time communicating in any medium at all.
"We are not the pinnacle of evolution. That honorable distinction belongs to the lowly cockroach. Resistant to radiation, adaptable, and able to live for weeks at a time while headless. So if God created near-perfect beings in His image, I submit to you that God is a cockroach." - Mohinder Suresh, Heroes
"Much of the strength and efficency of the government, in procuring and securing happiness to the people, depends on..the wisdom and integrity of its governors." Benjamin Franklin
Speech in the Constitutional Convention at the Conclusion of Its Deliberations - Sept 17, 1787
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one" In an attempt to save my dignity, I would like to point out that the law says "a comparison", with no mention of who Nazis/Hitler had to be compared to.
Any stepping on would've been done by the other ship operators in the nearby ocean.
Not neccesarily. In the early 20th century, radio towers were set up along the Rio Grande. These towers blasted with such intensity that, under certain weather conditions, their broadcasts could be picked up by sailors in the Artic Circle and the Baltic Sea.
Frankly, Americans don't give a damn. Political apathy is overwhelming here. partially because we're bombarded daily about some new political buisness, not matter how trivial it may be (State governor might be gay! Call the papers! US Senator got a speeding ticket! Call the papers! City mayor forgot to feed his dog! Call the papers!). You need hip-boots just to wade through all the bullshit and after a while people have stopped caring.
In Soviet Russia, credit card cancels you!

Didn't you get the memo? Personal responsibility died a long time ago.
I think this just falls under the "Damn Cool" category.

can't really blame parents and parents alone when their kids behave badly.
You're absolutely right! The kids should get some of that blame too.

See there? Was an explanation so hard?
Why not?
If it's American beer, there's really not a difference.

A rather insightful individual I'd say.
That would explain why life is hell once a month
That is normal Slashdotting.

At least he dies happy....
