CVTs are the way to go in automatic transmissions. The throttle becomes the "power request pedal" and the transmission keeps the engine in the correct RPM range for the requested level of power. Slightly push the pedal? Engine sedately hovers at 2500 RPM while you gently accelerate. Floor the pedal? Engine immediately climbs to 6000 RPM and stays there as you accelerate like a bat out of hell. Initially it's a bizarre feeling to have the engine pitch remain constant while you accelerate.
Interestingly, I heard some drivers complain that CVTs feel underpowered and slow. I don't know what to make of this discrepancy.
the obvious way to do that would be to increase the excise tax on gas, repeatedly, until it permanently drives the prices at the pump up by two or three orders of magnitude. If gas were twelve bucks a gallon [...]
You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Presuming youre talking about artificial limitations, Microsoft have been doing it for years. For example, I can watch Blu-ray under XP. No such luck with Vista or Windows 7 thanks to the extra DRM and my non-hdcp monitor.
Terrible example. The fact that MS came out with Vista and Win-7 does not affect in any way the ability of existing Win-XP systems to play BD content. In other words, your Win-XP system today still supports all the features that it officially supported when you bought it.
- finally someone with common sense. When I see things around them, I know that they are all my things, all I have to do is take them. I don't care if you worked for those things, as long as I can take them away from you, they are my things. You are just keeping them for me temporarily, until I decide that I need them. Society is to be used as long as it is profitable for me. Nothing should be given back to it unless I feel generous that day.
There's a fine line between "food for thought" and "troll", and I think that this post managed not to cross it.
Basically, roman_mir is correct. The "natural" behaviour is the rule of force and individuals will revert to this mode as long as they can get away with it. This however is detrimental to society as a whole so once you start forming societies, such behaviour is discouraged within the society (it is often tolerated, or even encouraged, with regard to individuals outside that society or to other societies). Some call it "civilization". Still, the concept of "ownership rights" is an artificial construct.
The problem that I see is that, civilization notwithstanding, the powerful members of society still manage to prey on the weak without fear of retribution. The "society is to be used as long as it is profitable for me" approach is all too common.
Includes more detail about the algo - Developed with researches at Princeton - Demo'd at SIGGRAPH in Aug. 2009 - Old spot-healing tool tried to find one match for the hole; new tool copies multiple patches from the surrounding BG to fit into the hole, as well as finding & copying surrounding patterns
How is is different from the Patchworks project from MS Research (published 2003, implemented in MS Digital Image Suite)?
Is there any chance of having something like that as a Paint.NET plug-in?
If and when first contact is made, all hell will break loose with every "leader" doing whatever in their power in order to secure their own private interests (and screw the populations they "represent", as usual).
After the dust settles, I suspect that those controlling the biggest sticks will reach some agreement about calling the shots.
Alternatively, it is quite conceivable that we will manage to destroy ourselves in the process of figuring that out.
the court threw out the accusation that he attempted to strangle the officer. The guards' testimony was demolished on cross examination as inconsistent and the only thing that the prosecutor had at the end was that, after the guard had punched him in the face several times (an event which the prosecution did not dispute), he did not immediately comply with an instruction to lie on the ground.
The question I'd like you to ponder is: What are the consequences for the border guards for: 1. Unlawfully attacking a person without provocation (as proven in the trial), and 2. Lying in court (as proven in the trial) ?
The judges are asserting that there is a likelihood that the prosecutor was retaliating by threatening to prosecute because the Does were seeking to exercise their rights under the law. Isn't this barratry?
It's violation of civil rights under color of law (18 USC 242). Perhaps the FBI should be brought in.
No, because some animals are more equal then others.
If the media really cared about open government and barring corruption, they would be publishing daily headlines about denials to FOIA requests, how long they have been waiting, and what the alleged reason is. If the press did their job and informed the people rather than preach propaganda, people could be better armed with information to put pressure on elected officials and force them to move on come election day if the officials don't mend their ways.
So ask yourself, who owns the press and is it in their best interests to have the press do its job.
okay, okay - you'll tell me about Delphi now, I know... but let me tell you about parametric polymorphism, generic classes, multiple inheritance, operator overloading,...
But, I still think punishing someone to send a signal to society is BS.
No, it is not.
You have the threat of punishment as a deterrent against crime. However, in order for it to be even remotely effective, you must follow through. It's like threatening your kids with a sanction if they misbehave and then relenting after they do -- it sends the wrong message.
Basically, you sent the "signal to society" when the law was written. Now you have to act on that signal.
Actually, I'd like to nominate myself as Gollum. Recently a copyright case came up in Australia for a song using 2 bars of a melody from another song. (The flute riff from Men at Work's song "Down Under") So I have used a brute force algorithm to write all possible 2 bar melodies in 2/4 3/4 6/8 and 4/4 time signatures. All future music belongs to me.

How do modern DSGs compare to modern CVTs?
Interestingly, I heard some drivers complain that CVTs feel underpowered and slow. I don't know what to make of this discrepancy.

Technically correct, although the Israeli system is close enough.
Glad to see you're in complete agreement.
That was one of the best hidden slashdot gems I came across for a while. I'm sorely tempted to make it my signature.

And we (in Canada) live in a constitutional monarchy, so?
And guess what, both countries are democracies (representative ones).
