  1. Re:GPL for all? on Sun Open Sources Java Under GPL · · Score: 2
Rubbish. The MS fan boys have been hand waving away legitimate concerns about patent and licensing liability in Mono since day one. Now Novell has made it absolutely clear that Mono has patent and/or licensing liabilities and they still want to dismiss very real issues as FUD.

Please direct me to where they make it absolutely clear.

Not all parts of the .Net environment are covered under ISO/ECMA standards. Even if it were completely covered, the notion that Microsoft won't violate it's own standards or ignore a toothless standards organization if it pleases is just foolish.

Why would we care if they violate their own standards? They exist nevertheless, and we can benefit from them.

You can't "fix" a patent violation. Once it's done, it's done and you're liable. Assuming that there's some work-around you might be able to remove future liability but depending on the nature of the patent there's no guarantee that's practical or even possible.

There is a risk, yes. Hopefully, the Mono developers and contributors can stay away from this.

  2. Re:GPL for all? on Sun Open Sources Java Under GPL · · Score: 0

Technology from an "evil" company does not need to be inherently evil tself. C#/.NET is a great platform, the Mono 1.2 milestone is nothing but great.

Once a version of C# and related technologies are accepted as ISO/ECMA standards, there is no way for Microsoft to later on change them. The specs will always be there, and we will have another great language available to us.

The only thing we need to make sure of is to stay away of accidentally infringing on Microsoft patents in the Mono implementation. However, even if we accidentally do, I see no problems making our solution. In programming, there are often dozens of solutions to a given problem.

    Please stop FUD:ing.

As a contributor to both GEGL and GIMP, I am sorry to say that the integration of GEGL as the main processing core into GIMP will take quite a while.

However, the new stable version of GIMP, 2.4, which is a significant improvement both usabilitywise and featurewise, will be released in a not-too-distant feature. If you have some time to spare, these are the bugs that are blocking a GIMP 2.4 release.

Hopefully this invitation is simply a consequence of that Microsoft has (finally) realized that there is no way they will be able to keep up with OSS in the long run. Maybe they have finally realized that sooner or later, given enough time, every commercial application will have a free counterpart.
