Will Apple Disappoint on 30th Anniversary?
An anonymous reader writes "We've seen the media get over-excited about an Apple launch before, but one CNET columnist is 'threatening suicide' if Apple don't announce something for their 30th Anniversary this Saturday. CNET is concerned at the lack of any news from Apple: 'You'd guess that Steve Jobs will at least have to walk out onto the lawn in Cupertino, light a few fireworks and make some whooping noises. It's that or risk an international incident.' Is Apple going to keep a low profile for their 30th?"
I hope Chris Stevens and his wife don't have any anniversaries coming up. I guess she could always 'forget one' after taking out a lucrative life insurance policy on him.
My work here is dung.
If they announce a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse, I'll be satisfied. Anyone know what's taking so long?

My iPod died two months ago, (second gen 40GB. So sad.) As I was deciding over a repair ($250) a refurbished, or a new iPod I heard a rumor on /. about a new line for the 30th birthday. So I've waited. If they don't announce, I will feel like quite the chump.

I would settle for a one day sale of 30% in celebration of 30 years. Every Apple product 30% off, then I would buy a MacBook Pro. They at least need to do an April Fool's joke. Like "We're making OS X available to install legally on all generic x86 harware." ... Gotcha! April Fools!!
Apple are going to do something very very cool. I would bet good money on it. Apples target age group is 25-35 so they better. :)
I was going to post just that. What kind of FA is this, is /. becoming a big gossip machine?

I couldnt possibly care less that Apple celebrates their 30th with a big news or not. When they DO announce something, then we can talk.

Apple plans on selling their portable computers to Lenovo and the desktop computers to Dell, following the leads of IBM and Alienware. Apple will then take the money from those two deals and purchase apple music thereby bringing a long-time battle to a close. Of course this will result in Beatles music being available in iTunes for 9cents per song, to spite Yoko Ono.

Apple will announce a leather cover for the iMac, to placate this journalist.
Give me a break. When Apple *does* make a big announcement everyone complains ("another new iPod!?") and then when they *don't* make a big announcement they still complain ("where's the new iPod?!").
I kept a low profile on my 30th birthday. Just like I am going to for my impending 40th. Why do computer companies need to celebrate a decade when most people cringe and moan about being another decade older?
A suicide is not a light subject to be throwing it around like it's some joke...
I'm as much of an Apple fanboy as the next guy (3 Macs at home, 2 ipods, 6 converts), but whose head is so far up Apple's ass that they joke about suicide?
Apple has its schedule, and whether they celebrate their 30th anniversary is irrelevant to me. Yes, it would be great and hip, but they already have an outstanding product lineup.
Also the poster for the iPhone looks pretty damn good.

Look, there have been announcements earlier this year, there will be announcements in a couple more months. The Conroe Towers (ask about our move-in specials!) and Leopard may both be out in August, which is why we think they moved the next big conference back. Do they have to announce something on Saturay, just to give reporters something to do? Yah, I'd almost die at the thought of having to dig up an original story, instead of rehashing a press conference, too. So, you want them to announce something early, before they're close to ready? Apple doesn't want a rep as a vaporware provider. Apple needs to fix bugs in its current MacBookPro, among other things, in fact. So calm down. About the only thing ready now might be the budget MacBooks. Oh, and maybe a phone. :)
Nobody asks Microsoft or Intel or even IBM what their anniversary products will be.
What is the big deal about this? Microsoft announces a new product and service and people are all like "who cares? this isn't even news" but Apple doesn't have plans to have the Stones playing at their 30th birthday party and everyone is ready to get all upset over it?
I just can't understand it.

I got the first of the 40GB iPods when they were released a few weeks later it was full, I've been waiting since for the 80GB version. There was a story at least 1 year ago about Apple buying a stack of Toshiba 80GB drives shortly after they were released, which is why I've been on the hook for so long. Seems to me like Apple is playing the Intel game. Have a product ready to launch, as soon as sales drop on your current line because you've sold the crap out of it, release the good stuff and line up the next product.
C'est la vie!!

Wait a second.... do I smell a April fool here? Who the hell starts a company rolling on April Fool's Day? It's no wonder that (as much as I love and cherish mine) Apple has never gotten any head way, everyone's always thought the cool crazy gadgets they release on their anniversaries were just hoaxes... Now I get it!
Ok, but seriously, who cares if this guy kills himself? I, for one, do not.

Are there any Mac users out there who don't keep track of the number of people who have "switched" after playing around with his or her computer for a while?
In this case, a terrific 30th birthday would be business as usual - and appreciating how GREAT "business as usual" is these days. Tens of millions of iPods, great market share for iTunes, the best OS interface AND under the hood guts in the world, great apps like Aperture, iLife, iWork, etc... and all around, excellence in action. Just appreciate it. That would be a great birthday. Give thanks to Jesus with a grateful heart for all He has given our favorite computer company, and us through it.

Sounds like the original post has a good point.
Mac fans may not like it but it's not a good sign for Apple.
Sounds like Stever is being a tad misleading or the Apple press is glossing over something.
Rumors of the iPhone started in Jan. 2003. I know, I bought into them and waited to get a cell phone that year, finally giving up in October and getting something else. So as much as I'd like the iPhone to be announced this Saturday, I'm definitely not holding my breath.
12" and 17" MacBooks are definitely due, so that's where I'd put my money if I were betting.
But Saturday would be a bizarre day of the week for Apple to do any product introduction, as they wouldn't get enough press coverage. Apple announcements are historically made on Tuesdays.

This is indeed one area where Apple lags behind Microsoft. Microsoft has the ability to not just disappoint on each and every anniversary of their founding, but most of the days in between as well.
Miramax has started production of a movie where if you die in your blog, you die in real life too.
WHY? Apple already releases a new iPod every 6 months, why one now just for the anniversary date? Wouldnt something like the video iPod count as such a product since it was released this year (or was it released before the new year? cant remember)?
Keep in mind that their anniversary is April Fools Day... What better joke than to celebrate their anniversary a day later? ;-)
That's right: the Apple \/, the latest successor to the wildly successful Apple ][ line, is on its way. My thought is that if they went to the trouble of releasing a "special edition" of a computer for the 20th anniversary, what might they do for their 30th? With the switch to Intel well underway, can they afford to dedicate resources to a "one-off" special edition project? Might it only contain subtle differences?
I think that's what people are getting anxious about... If they set the bar at a certain height 10 years ago, are they really prepared to either meet it or raise it with everything Apple has going on right now?

Please, Apple, don't announce anything over the next week.
The idea that there could be a lot less hyping, tech journalists out there is just wonderful.
These people don't offer anything but the ability to write bumf and fluff about crap. They recycle rumours, they hype things, and ultimately they let people down because of this.
So, Apple, hold off that 4" Video iPod. Hold off the MacBook and the MacBook Pro 17". Don't offer any new products, apart from maybe a fluffy pink iPod sock with the number 30 written on it. You'll be doing the world a favour.
that's a good idea... although I think I'll wait for its 100th anniversary, maybe then I'll also manage to blag that (free beer!)

Yeah, all that is going to happen is that there will be the new larger capability ipods, that may or may not have a wide screen *not like what people think* and a new iBook with a 1.5 core solo, and up to a 1.83 core duo with a 13.3 inch wide screen. it will weigh a little over 5 lbs, have the new apple power connector, but will have intel based video. What the surprise will be is that it will support two monitors, but only with some hacking like the current ibooks. Also expect a new style case, that some will say is stupid, while others will say it is evolutionary not revolutionary. I am not sure if the iSight camera will be buit in, but I don't think they are going that wroute any more. Oh, and yeah, a new iSight camera that will be almost HD quality, but won't work on anything but the g5 and intel based macs. It will be USB 2, and not firewire, surprising people.

I remember the ideas Apple pantented (or something like that) about a wide-screen full-screen iPod type device with touch screen interface. Although I'm a bit wary about if they would make it a touch screen for fingers. I'd like to see a "PowerPod" so to speak, like the iPod, but more fully featured (like the iBoos vs. PowerBook comparison). Perhaps a PDA of sorts....
In undeveloped countries, the consumer controls the market. In capitalist America, the market controls you.
I have used some of the best designed Windows laptops the planet has to offer. The second mouse button is NEVER is a good place or easy to use.
On a laptop, where your fingers controlling the trackpad are right by the keyboard, chording keys to get to the second button is much, much better because you get the second button exactly when you want it.
I've been using a Powerbook at home for years now and it's the only laptop I've ever used that I do not ever use an external mouse for. There simply is no need.
I do use a three button Logitech mouse on my desktop, which I could not be without. But in the laptop a single button that you chord to activate other features is the way to go.

He'd use Apple Pages with the special 30th Anniversary 'suicide note' templates. Could be one of the nicest looking suicide notes ever with excellent text wrapping features and plenty of drop shadow. Trust me. This is an inactive account. Regardless of what the
Apple Computer and Apple Records HAVE been in the news once again - this very week! Perhaps what we need is a "Love In" and a final settlement between the long bickering between the record company and the computer company over logo issues, media rights, and even love.
Who knows, they may find more to argue about if they don't come to a fresh new aggreement. The latest they are arguing about is the considerable amount of revenue that Apple Computer has been getting from the sale of iPod systems, which happen to include music. Apple Records is all up in arms about that. They want some of that money.
Send love!

They will disappoint. Has Apple ever acted in response to forced timings? They just do things when they want. Remember the 20th anniversary?
The whole point of a company making a "big announcement" is to get the media buzz that accompanies such theatrics. Apple's got it without taking any risk and without expending any effort; I say it'd be smarter (and more "mysterious", thereby generating even MORE buzz) to just let it pass quietly.
And then dazzle us the NEXT week (maybe a new iPod so small you need an electron microscope to see it...)
This space intentionally left (almost) blank.
No honestly, I think people's expectations for what Apple will do is unfounded.
First, I can't see Apple coming out with a dramatically new iPod concept only 6 months after the last iPod generation. Apple can't keep releasing new iPods on quick cycles, it will affect consumer confidence (more like, consumers will stop buying iPods because they go obsolete in 6 months). Perhaps Apple was keeping something up their sleeves with iPod for the 30th, but I think it will backfire rather then impress consumers. I was considering the new 5th gen iPod to replace my 3rd gen, then I heard rumours about a newer video iPod. I basically won't be buying any iPod until Apple reveals their cards, as is the opinion of many people I know in the market for a new player.
I also don't expect any great innovations from their computer lines. G5 is still a solid desktop workstation, and I don't see Apple wanting to rush G5's away for Intel's Duo Core. Largely, Intel's Duo Core can't compete with a quad G5 system, and until I see Intel looking to make dual Duo Core chipsets, I don't see Apple coming out with a new desktop system to replace the G5. New iBook's, MacBooks's, Mac Mini's or iMacs will be underwhelming as a 30th Anniversary release as they will only be configuration tweaks, not all out redesigns. I don't think Apple will make the mistake of another Anniversary edition Mac. We can only handle 1 overpriced dud a decade, and Apple already came out with the G4 cube this past decade.
Whats left? A cellphone or tablet device? These have been rumored for years, I don't see why Apple would have left them as 30th anniversary surprises. Apple can't compete in the cell phone market, honestly. This market changes frequently (like monthly), while Apple doesn't. Apple can't release one style of cellphone to fit all consumers. Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony all make a slew of different models because consumers of cellphones are fickle. An Apple based cellphone will only appeal to a small market segment and thus could not dominate the way iPod did. Apple helped to define the digital music player market, the cell phone market is already well established and has many leaders. Apple would be competing against equals (which they seldom have don't well with). Unless Apple dominates a market like with the iPod, Apple typically struggles (like with 30 years of computers).
A tablet device will also be unexpected and underwhelming. Who would buy a tablet device? Students. But any tablet device from Apple will be too expensive for most students to afford, and it will be a novelty item for many non-students.
What Apple SHOULD release for their 30th anniversary is a TV set-top device that connects Mac's or even PC's to your home theater system. This will launch Apple into the home theater market which is largely undefined. Something with Apple's panache with multimedia handling in a box that can be used as a PVR and full digital media support over networks. Apple could do with Home Theater what they did for iPod, take a bunch of ideas that other companies are poorly implementing and consolidate them into one superior device. But then, Steve Jobs says that HTPC's are a novelty and fad that will wain quickly. It's not surprising for Steve Jobs to renege on his comments, but I doubt Apple has any big plans for Home Theater consumer electronics. They don't even support 5.1 surround in most of their computers and Apple's one foray into newtworked multimedia ( AirTunes ) was a disaster in my opinion.
Apple blew their wad too early this year with new "video" iPods, iTunes services and introducing the Macintels. I would have left introducing the Macintels until the 30th anniversary to give people something to talk about.
While it is impossible to predict what Apple will actually do, I won't get my hopes up for too much. By anticipating the least, if Apple does something truly wonderful, then it will be surprising and exciting. But getting your hopes up too much will just leave you disappointed when Apple announces some new word processing applications, revision to an iPod, or a larger 17" MacBook, which is all I am banking on.
I haven't thought of anything clever to put here, but then again most of you haven't either.

On the day of the big 3-0, Apple neither announces nor releases a product. Journalist kills himself. Apple releases the iCoffin the next day.
Maybe Apple and Steve are not making a splashy celebration this time around because a decade ago, Apple's "big idea" of a 20th anniversay Mac was an utter failure. The machine was nice - sleek design, TV/FM radio, S-video inputs, Bose sound, and was limited to the production of 12,000 machines with a cost of $10,000 a pop that was delivered to and installed at your home by an Apple authorized rep. (If I recall correctly... I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm not)
Eventually after only selling a couple thoasand at that cost... they were sold at the "bargain basement" price of 2 grand.

You can get great deals (like 30% off) on a refurbished Mac. I bought my 12" Powerbook G4 for about 28% less than it was selling new, and it was a real bargin. The computers are all completely repaired and tested, and you get the Apple warranty plus you can opt for AppleCare.
Just a suggestion if you want "like new" at a fraction of the new cost.

I have been hoping that Apple would at least have a sale or other purchase incentive during this anniversary. I've been thinking that jumping to Apple would now be a good idea. It is either jump or start researching a build for a new system that will make Vista shine. I could use a change of OS; Windows has probably not helped with the hypertension.
A new product like a video iPod or a 120 gig version of the current iPod would also be great.
You're absolutely correct, but retro-computing is a very small niche market. Working up the fabrication facilities for such a limited run wouldn't be profitable. As much as I'd like to see re-issues of beauties like the Apple //c or Mac Color Classic II, or something totally new like the Mac SE/40 some wish Apple had made before the PPC transition, it will never happen.

What the hell is up with people saying things like "Apple don't" instead of "Apple doesn't"? I'm sick of reading this shit. It's mostly newspapers from India that carry this kind of incorrect grammer. If you can't get your English right, stop calling yourselves English speakers.
remember there was no big anything for the 25th, maybe not even an acknowledgment? i think that's a more valid reference since Steve Jobs did not even work for Apple when the 20th passed. the fact that they had that little slide of the 30 years of Apple at the end of the MacWorld SF keynote is the only indication they may acknowledge it. i would expect an apple.com home page at least.
*IF* they are going to do anything crazy, it's possible today or tomorrow they will send out invites to the media for a special event tuesday. maybe email people today or tomorrow for some in-store special deal on saturday. it's Apple, so who knows.
My guess would be the announcement of the intel equivilant of the power mac G5 dual CPU

yeah, but that was all done after Steve Jobs was fired and before he returned. he had no hand in that machine.
as silly as the machine was, it was a neat machine and did end up as a prop in TV/movies long after it was incredibly outdated technology.
the way i heard the story was that they were initially intended as a special machine for dealers and promotion almost as functional artwork. when they did not sell out they were offered to the general public. i may be wrong, but i think it was intended to be a special edition dealers would have to show off, kind of like how, for example, Harley-Davidson sells their dealers incredibly limited versions of their racing motorcycles. to race the bikes in certain classes, there has to be a certain number produced and sold off. they make the minimum number and sell them as collector pieces. dealers often buy them and put them right on display. maybe some classes of racing cars are the same way? granted HD has to do that, but in the process they create these collectors items. i think it was an idea by management to try to sell the TAM the same way, and it just didn't catch on. i kind of remember somebody like Club Mac selling them eventually (i guess at the $2,000 price?).
The 20th Anniversary Macintosh didn't come out until June of 1997, so we could get to wait over a year until Apple decides to pop out something for their 30th anniversary.
It was the Steves' boomer generation that coined this iconic phrase. Every new generation thinks its wiser (and probably is) than the generations that proceded it.
So far Apple seems to have found the corporate "fountain of eternal youth" having three mega-hits among its dozens of products (Apple-II, Mac, iPod/iTune). And wouldnt be surprised to see another each decade to come if Jobs can stay at the helm (cancer survivor).
I am not certain how you have your center button configured, but this is a fascinating feature on the ThinkPad. If you hold the button down and then move the TrackPoint, it will act like a scroll wheel.
On the Powerbooks you get the same effect by using two fingers together on the trackpad, no buttons required.

There's no point him jumping.
He's an Apple user so unless he can actually land in a wastebasket the jump is bound to end in some other totally unpredictable outcome.

I mean, how many times have you been able to say that your new computer model was a thousand times faster than your old one? OK maybe a thousand is a bit high, but certainly several orders of mangnitude.

They did nothing for their 25th. I see no reason why they wwould do anything for their 30th. Maybe we'll see something for the 50th, but don't hold your breath.
They did nothing in 2004 to celebrate the 20th Anniversay of the Macintosh. What makes people think they'll do something for the 30th Anniversary of Apple? Sure, 10 years ago they had the 20th Anniversary Mac, but that was Apple under Amelio. This is Apple under Steve Jobs, who is pretty fuddy-duddy when it comes to Apple fan boys.
My prediction: They'll do jack shit and columnist will be called a puss for not jumping.
...the columnist will only wound himself when Apple announces their new leather iPod case in different colors??
"But this one goes to 11!"
One less columnist.

I have the skinny--it's going to be the iPod Mega. $599 and comes preloaded with every song ever recorded. Only problem being that you'll need a Class A drivers license with a doubles endorsement to take it anywhere.
BTW, Shouldn't it be Apple's 30th *birthday* rather than Apple's 30th anniversary?
Maybe their 30th anniversity will involve something with their giant ipod which can be seen in Google Earth? Check it out: lat -30.514888 and long 121.337539.
Duh! Despite tons of speculation, there was nothing substantial that Apple did for their 25th anniversary. I predict the same for this year. The number of years the company has been around isn't terribly important, and Steve is probably right in not spending the company's resources on the anniversary. If they announce something, it'll be something they've had cooking anyway. In terms of publicity, CNet and other news sources and fans are doing a fine job of that, and Apple doesn't seem to be hurting for exposure these days anyway. What's to gain by disrupting everything the company is doing just to say "wee, we didn't go out of business!" ?? Great big non-story. CNet trolling for page views. Nothing to see here.
One less C|Net hack? Surely we can all get behind that.
I just bought a new Turion laptop and the Synaptics trackpad recognizes gestures. Tap the pad for clicks, slide your finger along the right edge for vertical scroll, along the bottom edge for horizontal scroll. It's the simplest, slickest, most intuitive thing I've seen in a long time. I already find my wife's Powerbook G4 to be confusing and annoying because it doesn't have it. And the whole thing can be implemented in a driver update.

This Joy of Tech comic from about a month ago seems prescient, particularly if someone really does commit suicide.
The author, Chris Stevens is apparently a 12 yr. old boy, still living at home. Or maybe a 32 yr. old Brit, still living at home. Roughly the same thing ;-)
In any case, he Dvorak'd us.
He wrote something slightly psychotic, freaky and frightening and got his link on Slashdot.
Dude, it's a good company making a good product, not the second coming of whatever.
Apple has been shipping a solid OS, with worthwhile upgrades appearing on time for *years*.
That's really quite enough, thank you.
Compare that to what our friends in Redmond are (not) providing -- I think Apple users are being well taken care of.
All I can say is: Thanks Steve!
( FWIW: I too keep track of converts, but *did* finally lose count of how *many*.
I keep one G4 and one G5 all running OS 10.3.4... doing heavy lifting every single day, running for *months* now without rebooting. 1 Powerbook for traveling. 2 iPods. Still have a working AV 650 in the closet and started off with one of the original "signed" boxes that booted with a floopy. Oh, yes, and we have a few Linux servers, 1 Win?? desktop and several WinWhoCares laptops for stuff that runs on WinWhateva only.
Yeah, it's pretty funny to see heavy user fanboys that aren't quite so frantic as the overexcited young Mr. Stevens. Hope he donates his Apple goodies to a good cause if he goes off that bridge. sigh. )
Anyone think that the code which generates a "click to read more" link on a post that has been cut short should not be used if the link will be longer than the amount of the article being cut off?
Unfortunately, the rendering is factually incorrect, spoiling the design. There should be a wedding ring.
Apple should use a two-finger-tap to do a right click. They already detect and ignore that gesture.. Using two fingers on the trackpad to scroll is implemented and works great. A one-finger tap does a left click.. Two-finger-tap is a natural extension.

we'll have a funky new machine.

You'll spot one.

I prefer to use the keyboard as much as possible - whcih is why it is far more convieninet to use the "option" key to chord for the right mouse button, because that hand is already on the keyboard.
As I sad I've used a number of Windows laptops as well, for work - thinkpads and dells and so on. Second mouse buttons are either too hard to hit, or too easy leading to mistaken hits withthe wrist (like the Dell).

I was just listening to NPR, and they ran a short news item that said that Apple was going to announce a new version of the iPod, the "iPod 3d". It is supposedly a "portable holographic projector". Now, either this is really cool, or it's an April Fools joke being played by Apple or NPR (tommorow is also April Fool's Day). I hope it's the first, but I'm almost sure that it's the second.
Reading your post (and wholeheartedly agrreing), I have to offer this link: http://presentationzen.blogs.com/presentationzen/2 005/11/the_zen_estheti.html
It's a comparison of presentation "styles" of Jobs and Gates (the 2nd and 3rd picture say it all, really).
