What's really needed is an additional modification that would make the following generation fail to hatch. Yes, I realize the males are "sterile" but I also realize that a mutation could occur in their lab and then they would be releasing one that isn't sterile but would have many more males. I do not know the ecological fallout of such a possibility and I'm willing to be they don't know either. Nature is unforgiving and we already have a lot to make up for.
At the junction of when lab grown beef becomes economically viable and beef finally getting and environmental tax will be the be the beginning of the end. Lab grown meat will begin eating a chunk of the profits of the cattle industry which will be a feedback loop that will destroy the cattle industry as we know it. They won't disappear but they will have a minority share of the market.
1% is still a huge amount because how absurdly fast our processors have become. Do you know how much you can do with 45MHz? Javascript is being dynamically translated into machine code, so you can still do a LOT. The only thing this addresses is sites that hog the CPU, not any of the nefarious bullshit that sites do to track you every 7 seconds.
Verizon had signed a contract with the city and failed to hold up their end of the contract. Naturally, there are provisions for what happens in this case.
15. DEFAULT AND REMEDIES
15.1. Defaults. In the event of any breach, default, failure or other noncompliance by the Franchisee in the performance of any obligation of the Franchisee under this Agreement (each such breach, default, failure or other noncompliance being referred to herein as a “Default”), which Default is not cured within the specific cure period provided for in this Agreement (or if no specific cure period is provided for in this Agreement then within the cure period described in Section 15.3 below), then the City may:
15.1.1. cause a withdrawal from the cash Security Fund, pursuant to the provisions of Section 15.11 herein;
15.1.2. make a demand upon the Performance Bond pursuant to the provisions of Section 15.9 herein;
15.1.3. draw down on the Letter of Credit pursuant to the provisions of Section 15.10 herein;
15.1.4. pursue any rights the City may have under the Guaranty;
15.1.5. seek and/or pursue money damages from the Franchisee as compensation for such Default;
15.1.6. seek to restrain by injunction the continuation of the Default; and/or
15.1.7. pursue any other remedy permitted by law, or in equity, or as set forth in this Agreement, provided however the City shall only have the right to terminate this Agreement upon the occurrence of a Revocation Default (defined hereinafter).
I'm pretty sure Verizon is going to claim they are blameless in court per the Rules of Acquisition..

If we're being honest here, both the PS4 and XBox One are just a compact PCs with unimpressive specs. The only difference is they come with a specialized OS and proprietary software. It seems to me that with a modern x86_64 chip (since they have built-in VM capabilities) that it should be entirely possible to run games for either console at their native speed on most desktop computers. This is why I could never bring myself to get either system, they are shitty computers without any real special features.
Half of me agrees. The other half wants to slap you and say it's mass produced temporary entertainment, like if you go to the cinema or to the theater or to a concert does it matter that you can't put it in a box and take it home with you?
I rarely watch a movie more than once but I listen to the same songs rather often. I don't care for concerts, so I'm afraid I cannot relate on that matter.
I like convenience and hate DRM, but the whole "jukebox in the cloud" service can be pretty convenient too.
It's convenient as long as you have access to it. I put my entire music collection in FLAC on a microSD card and can listen to it when I walk my dog without worrying about if my phone has enough charge, data rates, cell phone coverage or any other bullshit because I have dedicated media player.
it's no greater crime to rent a music collection than to lease a car.
You're right, it's not but it is equally as foolish.
The fact that Facebook and other "social media" sites are hoovering up all the data they can about you seems far more concerning to me than, "oh, it's more difficult for me to give them as much information as possible!" I would feel much better if slashdot stopped covering everything these sites are doing because honestly, it doesn't matter unless they are changing what information they are extracting from their users.
This, the man behind the abomination that was Gawker, does not understand what's really detracting from the value of the internet. It's an overload of people (like him) looking to cash in on users that has resulted in the worst elements of the internet. Honestly, who thinks pages that pull elements from 25+ different domains are going to end up being anything but garbage looking to exploit it's users?
Automation is not the enemy of humanity, it's the product of our knowledge and investment in science to better mankind. If you think automation is going to make people permanently unemployable then perhaps it's finally time to admit that we need some sort of universal income so that people can afford basic things like food and shelter. Alternatively, now would be a good time to start having the purge every year.;)
I find it disturbing that I have to explain this but here goes.
I find these prosecutions rather disturbing, as they amount to victimless thought crime. Yes, there is a child victim, and the story is terrible, but there is no causal connection,
You are correct in that there is no causal connection however what you have failed to realize is that this is specifically because possessing it is a crime. Let's say you change the laws and make possessing it a non-criminal offense. The first thing that will happen is that people will monetize it (selling/subscriptions/advertising/etc) and when there is a demand for additional/higher quality content, it will be purchased from the abusers.
Behavior is all about feedback loops and keeping it illegal prevents there from being an incentive to abuse children.
What insurance companies do is statistical analysis. If they look at say car accidents they don't care what it is about being 18, male and driving a sports car that makes you more accident prone than 35, female and driving a soccer mom car. They just want to measure how much and charge you a premium. If you're genetically pre-disposed for a lot of costly illnesses it's the same thing, it's not "bullshit" it's 100% real.
Herein lies the problem: genes are all dependant on each other. Seemingly unrelated genes can prevent others from activating or vice-versa. This is why we don't have a de facto list of sets of genes that cause certain illnesses. As such, we rely on statistical analysis to predict the effects and you end up with both false positives and false negatives. So the way we understand genetics now is by probabilistic understanding of the effects when in reality they are definite.
The result is that they may charge you for illnesses you have 0% chance of ever having and not charging people for illnesses that they will inevitably have.
The title here is extremely deceptive because MSVC isn't being ported to Linux at all. What they are doing is creating a way to target Linux. It's still just development on a Windows desktop, not development on a Linux desktop.
The purpose of this bill is to bypass the ACA's current protection mechanism against discrimination due to preexisting conditions. Currently, we know very little about what sections of our DNA actually does (with a few exceptions) and even less about how sections are activated. How we "know" what risk factors you have via DNA is strictly a statistical analysis and based on observation rather than investigations into a particular gene's function. So really, this just gives insurance companies a blank check to claim any bullshit they want to change people with preexisting conditions. The irony here is that your DNA is the very first condition for coming into existence!
Bitcoin is something that can easily be manipulated thanks to the fact that China holds the majority of the bitcoin mining operation. If the owner of the Chinese mining rigs wanted, they could manipulate the currency's value with ease. The SEC made a sane and calculated decision here.
I hope all you Windows users are enjoying the fallout of the demolished QA division at Microsoft. Frankly, I think you guys are jerks because by continuing to use their OS, you continue telling them that their behavior is acceptable.
FTFY. Typical MBAs are stupid and only do things they know instead of exploring other options. The irony is that they save money by dropping Microsoft.
I've been trying to switch to various Linux distros over the last 12 years, and I've always been disappointed.
Oh right because "it doesn't have program XYZ and what's the point of life without it?!" "It's not a perfect copy of Windows, what's the point of learning something new?!" "It doesn't support hardware that just came out! I R GAMER GOD! MUST HAFVE NSHITTYA MOTHERBOARD SUPPORT!"
I understand the excuses and Linux isn't perfect but let's be honest here, it's really just a human problem when it comes to switching.
popcorn? popcorn? Not check?!? No popcorn! Sad.
I got popcorn for ya!

This would allow people to give Google (and Google's customers) their fingerprints. Why stop there? Why not just give away DNA, as well?
I tried doing that and all I got was a restraining order in return. ;)

How is this backfiring?
Because it should have been named, Subby McSubface! ;)

Are there great Linux drivers? Are they removing features from the Windows version so you have feature parity with Linux? Oh, well, fuck you Nvidia.
