The URL is the same (http://slashdot.org/). Rob simply added a mime redirect to httpd.conf that redirects text/vnd.wap.wml requests to /slashdot.wml. WML has some issues with HTML tags so the WML is basically a stripped-down lowercase HTML version of index page. Viewing comments via WAP is going to take some work becuase viewing 100K of text on a cell phone LCD screen is obviously not feasible so it will most likely be view-one-comment-at-a-time type of scenerio.

I totally agree. Being John Malkovich got a few nominations (including director Spike Jones) but Fight Club was only nominated for Sound Editing.

Fight Club is a great movie full of memorable moments and great quotes "I am Jack's ..." The writing was brilliant. Unfortunately I think it got panned because a lot of people are annoyed by Brad Pitt or assumed the whole movie is about gory bare-knuckle-boxing. Also the writer has been panned by critics as being a hack since this is his first novel.

Compared to all other films this year, Phantom Menace was a over-budgeted debacle. Lucas should've restricted himself to a $5 million budget and then maybe the film would've been interesting -- it would've forced him to to rely more on the story than the effects.

Last year I think Saving Private Ryan should've won hands-down, but instead it was Shakespeare In Love. Bah!

Basically the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences is like a club, and the Oscars is the process by which the existing members (previous Oscar winners) welcome new members into their club. Votes are not always cast for best in each category but rather with consideration of who's in and who's out.

By coincidence I helped a friend setup a proxy on his Windows box this weekend and he bought two of the SMC $15 cards you mentioned. True to form, plug-and-play detection did not properly detect the chipset and there were no printed instructions in the box or anywhere on the box about what to do next. I imagine Joe User would be stuck here. I suspected the "SMC TurboLinux" CD that fell out of the box may have some win drivers on it and sure enough if you dig under a few subdirectories you'll find the Windows oemsetup.inf file, the windows drivers, and if you look at the card itself you see the chipset is SMC1211A and the DOS diagnostic util for that chipset is under that subdirectory on that CD as well, which is also not printed anywhere on the box. See all you had to do was use your DirectTelepathy feature in Windows to have this information sent to you via ESP and then you'd know how to install the drivers for these dapaters. So after seven reboots, waving a dead chicken, threatening the machine with physical harm, and tearfully apologizing to Redmond for working at pro-Linux company I was then able to install and configure the card in Windows and it only took little over an hour. Gee, I really hope Linux can someday be as easy to use as Windows *cough* bullshit *cough*

There was a great series of articles in 2600 a year or two ago (summer '97 issue if I recall) called "A Guide to Getting Busted" that explains how/why a company will grossly overestimate monetary damages due to being cracked and how that translates directly into figuring how much jail time an unlucky skr1pt k1ddy will serve.

It bothers me that all the press coverage is not mentioning the various flaws in Internet filters, but instead most press stories are making it sound as if Holland voted in favor of pr0n for everybody because the ACLU told them pr0n is protected by the first amendment -- that's not what this issue is about, it's simply that Internet filters don't work as intended as Jamie demonstrated. Second, I have a humble suggestion: the front page of the site should be written with the newbie Linux user in mind. Think in terms of a brand new Linux users who is trying to figure out how to format a floopy disk, transfer files from his Windows drive, or read files from a CDROM. As soon as Joe Newbie hits the front page he should know where to go next. Unfortunately the current page design the most useful links are crammed up in the top left corner of the page, and the prime realestate is being used for the News column on the front page, which is basically the webmasters journal, although interesting, should not be the fropnt page of the site -- save that for the What's New page.
