Our lens stretches and contracts to adapt its focal length, and it not clear to me why it's been so difficult to adapt this principle to manmade optical equipment. Anyone got an answer?
We might be not too far from that. Check out these Fluidlenses.
It also would be much thinner and lighter, complete with perfect Optical Zoom. And with the current advancements in the digital sensors technology, soon cameras like the Creative CardCam will be possible with greater quality than today's cameras!
If you think a Blu-Ray player by itself might be £600-700, and we're coming in at just £425, it's a bargain.
It's seems clear by now. Sony does not want to promote its next console as a video-game. It wants to estabilish the blu-ray format as the default next-gen media.
And indeed, it has a lot more to afford financially if this happens. Let's just see if its plans will follow through. I, for one, am *not* buying a ps3 this time.
All it takes to throw the entire open source revolution into chaos and disarray is one well aimed chair-throw.
I believe this would be very true for corporations. We could make an analogy as these corporations being supported over a pit by a very strong chain. If this chain is attacked, be it by stupid moves from the corporation itself (Sony anyone?), or by very bad press and FUD, it might become very hard, sometimes even impossible, not to fall for doom.
But the way I see open source, it's more like being over a pit supported by many, many very thin and fragile straws. There are many views, many distributions, many projects, many leaderships, some stronger and centered, some diffused. It's a lot easier to completely destroy a lot of these straws, but since they are so many and quite independent of each other, it's becomes a lot harder to make open source fall down.
You would have a hard time throwing open source into chaos with a single chair throw.
The only users who might use this are the same users that would consciously turn down the volume during a loud passage. But for once, the old infamous slashdot joke might apply very well!
1. Create stupid and costless feature. 2. Market as safe for children hearing! 3. Get rid of lawsuits. 4. Profit!!!
I agree with you perl is not the most adequate for complex games, but this simple tutorial has cleared more doubts that I had than any C tutorial I have seen... VERY well written. =)
FTA: Mr. Liu said that Chinese Internet users have free rein to discuss many politically sensitive topics and rejected charges that the police have arrested or prosecuted people for using the Internet to circulate views.
He... is... nuts.
"Major U.S. companies do this and it is regarded as normal," Mr. Liu said. "So why should China not be entitled to do so?"
But he has a point here.

I have a completely encrypted drive in my laptop for sensitive information in case I lose it or it is stolen. This is just wise in my humble opinion and can be easily achieved by many tools, like truecrypt. For everything else, there is Gmail! =)
Well, you still CAN encrypt it yourself. Google will just re-encrypt everything.
But I don't believe any security-minded user that goes PGP would use this service anyway.
As long as they don't charge PER message, this is a VERY promissing service. And even more so when the desktop IM clients start being compatible with this standard.
The new program is reportedly re-tooled to work perfectly under CodeWeaver's CrossOver Office Wine emulation. This may mean that Linux Picasa is using the program's own native Windows DLLs (dynamic link libraries).
This gives me a very odd feeling.
While for one side this will be very good for Linux users as this technology may be used in the future, allowing a fast deployment and development of very good programs, will this also mark a real beginning for Linux closed-source programs and binary installations?
Quote from the company's press release about BMW's philosophy towards efficiency:
"A reduction in consumption amounting to a few percentage points over the entire model range exerts higher overall effects on the general population than high percentage points for a niche model."
Now the company just has to make BMWs available to the "general population"!
