Ah... I loved programming my Commodore 128. Assembly was the only way to go. I don't see the point though learning on a x86, at least for application programmers.
-History shows again and again... how nature points out the folly of man- GODZILLA!
Specificly, those annoying 'tunes' that cell phones play... turn the F#$#$# things off. After all, people pay good money to enjoy such public performances, not listen to your phone. It's a shame that laws have to be passed to enforce what should just be common courtesy
I don't mind the FBI thing and publisher logo that you can't skip through. I mean it lasts for a couple of seconds and then on to the content. It would take comparibly long to fast forward past it on a VCR. However I would mind if they made me watch an entire preview... I think I'd probably bring the thing back.
regarding tools, since you deal with lots of that stuff, can you reccommend a good/free retained mode scene/game engine for Linux that also supports OpenGL through the X extensions (so that my nvidia card will do the rendering)?
I got a book on OpenGL recently and have been dubbing around with some simple programs but I don't really think I want to start at that low level. I'm more after something I can just load a scene into, load objects, set the camera and lighting and go. Any suggestions?
I really liked that constuction kit with the plastic bubbles you could hook together. There was all kinds of neat stuff... modules with motors, pontoons, fans, etc. I can't remember the name though... If anyone remembers please let me know.
because when all Peru gov's documents become.doc's,.xls,.ppts - their screwed, it'll be too hard to abandon then. BTW, I think the crack/cocaine comparison is an excellent one.
That money is just a drop in the bucket to Microsoft. They probably figure if they can keep the gov of peru hooked a little while longer peru will turn around and buy stuff in the future. That and it's just Microsoft's uber-competitive nature to make people use windows... even if they have to pay people to do it. It would make me laugh if they go out of business because of having to pay everyone to use windows. Their so driven to have their way... they'll push it even if it kills em. *I hope so*
In case anyone hasn't seen the movie... I believe 'Consumers for Jesus' is a hat tip to the brilliant dark sci-fi movie Brazil. Funny how things are playing out that way too isn't it. It seems most new laws are about protecting the interest of greedy companies... not individuals. It's not a far fetched next step at all that it'll be a crime not to spend $$$ minimum quota... because spending supports capitism and keeping your money to yourself is just unpatriotic (you terrorist you)
I hope this isn't too far off topic... but if you want to see Terry Giliams flair for darkness & humor combined... go out and rent 'Brazil'. I think he's the man do to this movie right.
Both are supposed to be crime-fighting hero's... what will be the premise? Will one of them become evil? Also, it seems terribly mis-matched. Sure Batman's got some cool gadgets but overall he's just a guy... not some superhuman goliath from another planet. Add to that Batman's is just a local crime fighter (Gotham city)... Superman has a wider range. I just think it would make more sense to do a movie of dueling bad-guys... not hero's. Perhaps a Freddie vs. Jason movie for example- or Lex Luther vs. Dr. Evil;-)
I think that Mandrake tends to be an early adopter of new features... more so than other more conservative distro's like Red Hat. Whether that's a good thing or not is a whole other discussion- I personally think it's great. Mandrake was (one-of) the first to use a graphical installer, journaling file systems, etc. I imagine being part of a coalition like 'UnitedLinux' would entail restrictions as to what they can and cannot do. I'm glad that Mandrake has decided to continue choosing their own path.
I know not everybody does the same thing that I do, but when CD's first arrived I was eager to replace many of my favorite cassette tapes because of the CD's higher quality and convenience. I wonder if DVD sales aren't for similar reasons. Now that you can get many older movies for less than 10 dollars... I bet many people are just upgrading their collections. Like CD's, that'll probably drop off as people for the most part have what they want and the only thing left to get is new releases.
Computing DOES need to be more secure... that is what runs, enters into or is taken from the computer is done so only with the users consent. Unfortunately, many people are happy to let big companies like Micro$haft, AOL make those decisions for them. Perhaps something like a red button on the case that cannot be triggered by software. For example you get a BIOS message saying program X is trying to install program Y to allow this. Hit the red button if you want to allow this.
What's ironic is the the post that eventually gets modded up to 5 will say exactly the same thing (only with more words). I just felt like gambling karma today.
There was a pretty cool little windows demo a few years back from the GODS demo crew called TOYS. It wasn't realy improv.. but it had a story and a plot (somewhat)... which was a nice break from just the flashy gee-whiz only factor that alot of other demo's had. The graphics are pretty crude looking back on it now but it was a slick preview of what a movie/cartoon rendered in real time would be like.
I think it's mostly a move to save face... They want to keep the word from getting out that *cough* Microsoft hardware is quite hackable. Just the fact that the word is out should do some good damage to their reputation- and peoples confidence level in Palladium. X-box owners should make a big deal about this... the bad publicity for Micro$haft can be good for us. Every little bit counts.

What if it were a anti-slashdot plot?

What if they plotted a viciously anti-linux story so that Slashdot would link to it. Then as soon as it appears on Slashdot... they exchange the page at that link to a positive one. People visit the link, see that slashdot's comment was wrong and then start writing a bunch of nasty things about slashdot. Whadaya think, huh, huh, huh???
I couldn't help but feel that when all the hype was going on that Linux wasn't quite ready just yet. People no doubt found it an interesting alternative as a desktop platform but didn't quite see the level of polish needed to convince them to make the switch. Now that Star/Open Office and KDE3 (and soon Gnome2) are out, we are starting to see a new generation of bigger and better apps. If the grass roots support for linux remains strong (and I'm sure it will- were a devoted bunch after all)... I'm sure there will be another swell of public interest as well. I think next time Linux will be in a better position to impress, woo, and conquer.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
Yes! That's it. Aah memories ;-)

Havn't ya learned your lesson-
"Trust No One"
reminds me of the cold-fusion scam that happened a few years back too.
If these robots are running Windows, I'm getting one-way tickets to the north pole right now.

Well maybe he's not a little dweeb anymore... just a big dweep. Here's hoping - not
I guess I'll have to wait a while longer.
