"A bug in the flight software for the Mariner 1 causes the rocket to divert from its intended path on launch. Mission control destroys the rocket over the Atlantic Ocean. The investigation into the accident discovers that a formula written on paper in pencil was improperly transcribed into computer code, causing the computer to miscalculate the rocket's trajectory."
I heard a different version of the story. In the one I heard, the formula written on the paper was put into the computer properly -- but it was written on the paper wrong. Who's right?
Yes, but the last one is not called "Star Trek: Enterprise". It is just called "Enterprise". Which means that there were only 5 "Star Trek" series. (And you could agrue that since they were on a space station, DS9 wasn't really a "Trek". But I think most would agree that it was more "Trek" than Voyager).

Perhaps Pixar needs something like a modified CC/GPL for movies. Some sort of legal thing that says it gives up its copyright after 26 years. Then make it so that it also affects any company that it merges with. Then merge with Disney and cause it to stop all this silly copyright extending business.
Google should buy TiVo. Then produce a Google/TiVo device for DirecTv and Dish. Then I could have all the great benifits of Tivo plus the targeted ads for Google. (Imagine ads that would really be relevate to the show I'm watching.) Then they could add to it a IPTV channel. Where they download and store IPTV shows (like systm) to your device and it makes a tv channel out of them.
Maybe it's so that it doesn't matter what the server is. They could be running Linux. Then the could decided to run Sun instead. Or maybe try Windows (just kidding:-) The point is if a server goes down, just throw another one up (that can run Java) and you don't have to worry about it.
Most of you are missing the parents point. In the past, a lot of systems came with development tools. Commodore's and Atari's came with BASIC. BEOS came with a compiler and IDE. Macs come with a compiler, etc.
Wow. I knew Microsoft was a big company, but now they're so big that they're misplacing employees! I hope that the employees are alive and well when they find them. Maybe they need to form some sort of internal search and rescue team.
I could see the Freshman starting with learning the data structures, etc. Then having the Seniors work on OSS for their work as opposed to a project that the prof makes up.
...but I never thought they'd snoop that low. :-)
Because it's not as funny when you try it the other way:
"Much as that nerd from Finland might wish otherwise, there are many different operating systems and platforms in use in the world today."
Enjoy reading the windows.h did yea? :-)
....I just burn it to a CD and take it with me anywhere! :-)
... submits fake stories to slashdot!
According to Wired:

2000 feet long tubes
:-)
So I guess we're not going to see a portable one any time soon.

Why do we not write some lovely crap like:

OPERATE ON A WITH 3 USING ADDITION
You've obviously never programmed in Cobol.

How about a bunch of nerds at an online tech news site?
I'm not a woman you insensitive clod!

How many computer users are also computer programmers?
:-)
How many computer programmers are programmers today because their computer come with BASIC or a compiler and they started playing with it?
Did your car come with all the tools necessary to change the oil and rotate the tires?
No, but the manual has instructions telling how to.
Did your DVD player's manual talk about the DVD specification?
I dunno. I didn't read it.

"lower-level business person"
So this person's higher level supervisior didn't know what this guy was doing? Shouldn't he be reported to someone?
...if we can get some of those out of print Windows programming books from this. You know, the ones that go for $150 used.
I could see the Freshman starting with learning the data structures, etc. Then having the Seniors work on OSS for their work as opposed to a project that the prof makes up.
...one on Slashdot that actually likes Dvorak.
My favorite quote from the article is:
"Dumbed down and stupid is not the same as easy to use."
How about this: Don't send the movies to screeners. If they want to see it, let them go to the theater like everyone else has to.
and they're going to make an OS that doesn't crash
and a secure web browser
and all the other stuff they promised us...
And because it's not profitable, should these people not have access to broadband?
Actually I'm saying that they should have it. I'm one of those people. But we can't seem to get it out here. (Can't even get cable tv.)
"Now this probably won't matter to those of us with 24/7 connectivity, but people living in rural and undeveloped areas would surely benefit from it"
The problem is that there are not enough people in those areas to make it profitable.
