I completely agree. Further, when test are done to compare ogg, mp3 and AAC codecs, you have a better idea how they really compare. Say FAAC was used to encode the AAC file. You would then be able to say the test was probably not a fair trial. On the other hand, if Quicktime was used you would be safe in saying the best AAC file was used for the comparison.
It would be nice to know the best encoders for all codecs to be able to know that the best files were used in comparison tests.
I like your analogy with car horsepower. It points out a problem with tech jargon: rate of change. Car horsepower doesn't change as quickly as mega/giga-bytes/hertz. The average Joe probably doesn't know precisely what horsepower is either, but it doesn't matter unless he wants a sports car. The jargon has been there for some time, so most people have a general sense of what it means. In twenty years more people will have some general idea what a byte is (of course by then we will be talking about petabytes.).
I play my extended version on my x-box. I don't thnk your problem is related to DRM. However, when "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was re-released it didn't work on my X-box. I called Disney and was told that the extras prevented it from playing and they sent me a new version.
I would agree if it was apparent that the DMCA was broken. The problem is that the lawyers for McCalls are mistaking theft or trespassing for copyright infringement. This is a case where the the wrong offense is being alleged. I think the court will throw this out in short order and the lawyers will either have to file a different complaint, or take the case up with civil authorities and have them file criminal proceedings.
This already has come back to bite them. Look at revenues for the last two years. They released some movies that bombed and didn't have the video sales of their back catalog to fall back on.
I must have a short attention span because if I normally click on a link, by the time I read the new page I forgot what I was doing on the internet to begin with. That would be fine if I was just surfing, but most of the time I have a specific purpose. I usually right-click and open a new window.
A new back button may be fine, but I like my method (except that java scripts are becoming more prevelant and they don't let you right-click to open a new window.) Besides, having multiple windows open allows me to compare information from various sources.
You must not be a homeowner. I get about 8-10 calls a day from telemarketers. It is sad to read comments like this because it exemplifies a common view that I see: that a business has more rights than I do as a real, voting human being. It is the job of the federal government to look out for its people. I find these calls to be nuisance and look forward to some kind of legislation to free me of them.
At first I thought yout said they are not paying to keep you warm. But that brought to mind the fact that they do pay to keep you warm. It isn't directly related to profits, it is for employee comfort and a comfortable employee is a productive employee. Having the internet to use at work, if it is not abused, also makes an employee comfortable and, as the article points out, makes an employee more comfortable.
(By the way, an employee can waste company resources by adjusting the thermostat as well.)
So let me get this straight, hiccups are a suckling reaction. So, to get rid of the hiccups the best thing to do must be to suck on a woman's breast. All I can say is... "hic."

Sure, and there is free seat on a space shuttle waiting for you.

And that number, of course, would be 42.
I totally agree. (Now how can I post date this reply to 1993?)
Ok, here's a tip. Don't google "manhole." Can you say goatse...?
Shouldn't that be "Sould they give away a free car if you buy 1000 hours of music?" Maybe then I would buy some more music.
So maybe all sides need an echelon system to keep the other in check.
I think he meant to type "crack" not "crock."
Ah yes, articles on the ultimate in vaporware. Do we have a vaporware icon?
I can see a future Slashdot story in the making: "Apple Sues Slashdot For Name Of Anonymous Coward."
Note to 12 year old self ...
This already has come back to bite them. Look at revenues for the last two years. They released some movies that bombed and didn't have the video sales of their back catalog to fall back on.
Amen! I was expecting a story ala Stargate. Ah, traveling to other worlds via a Star Bridge Portal.
How about Ryan O'Neal. Love Story, Paper Moon etc. Oh you young 'uns.

The problem is, I don't understand Manderin or Cantonese.
"Is it too surprising, then, if technology might take it away again ?"
I believe the word you are looking for is ironic.

"I have mixed feelings about the ethics of Slashdotting on work computers."
Mixed feelings about a participating in a massive DDOS?
"Who robs the cave fish of their site?"
Isn't that censorship? Let them have a presence on the internet. Quit censoring the cave fish. Remember, they are people too.
