I know of at least one experiment that is totally scientific and genuine, which proves that our minds and capable of a bit more than what we think. This experiment involves showing a series of images in a random order on a monitor to the subjects, whose brains are being monitored. Some of those images are shocking. It is confirmed that brains start responding a few milliseconds *before* a shocking image appears. However the person remains unaware of it untill the image actually comes up.
Those who are interested can search for this one. The experimentors are perfectly sane scientists and results made it to reputed journals (iirc).
Hack into military systems. Sell your findings. Become rich or if you work for some government become important and successful. But what if you get caught?
One way is - make stories. Make many BS stories which no one would believe but it will divert their mind. Act lunatic, and they start thinking you are not a serious threat. Say you were not looking for nuke formulas or missile tech, only wanted to see some UFOs, ZPE, ghosts, fairies, monsters that they were 'hiding'. They will be relaxed and perhaps let you go.
Tell them you used superhacker perl scripts and old java code and you dont know how to save images and they start thinking you are not even a hacker, not even a script kid.
Tell them you could only find windows PCs with no passwords set and did not touch mainframes. They may stop doubting that you hacked their 'important' stuff. Tell them anything that you can think of which will make you look unimportant, funny, idiot and non-serious. They will treat you lightly.
In short, he is doing what he can to save himself !
Beware of people selling you things in the name of protection from "dirty" electricity.
Its obvious to most people having common sense that the tiny amount of emf from household electricity has no effect on body. Body is a good conductor and emfs cannot penetrate you easily.
What people dont know is whether it can affect the brain. It seems most unlikely however. Even if a tiny fraction of emf is able to produce a tiny amount of current in some area of the brain, its not going to make any difference, because neurons dont conduct in an analog way. It takes 1000's of signals from other neurons and right conditions to make a neuron fire and brain has very high redundancy, i.e, even if a few thousand neurons fire due to some error or external potentials, it still manages to work nicely.
But what about cancer, the effect at cellular levels ? The cells are always surrounded by a lot of emf/charges anyway, we have a lot of electricity flowing through the body at any time, a tiny bit of noise wont make any difference. It already very noisy inside.
As is well known, too much of anything is always bad. So yes, its better to avoid extremely high voltage stuff.
1. Why force 1000's of people each day to switch off their phones, when they can simply shield their equipment easily ??. It wont cost them anything.
2. If a mere cellphone can bring down an airplane, why terrorists are still using bombs or guns??
3. What if someone packs a few cellphones in their bags which go in the plane's luggage part?? How are they ensuring that no ringing cellphones are there ?
4. When they don't allow practically harmless things like nail-clippers or shaving blades or batteries, why they allow something which can destroy a plane full of passengers on just pressing a button???
5. Why use a missile to hit a plane when you can simply point a high gain GSM antenna to do the same ? (Hint to terrorists;) )
6. How they survive other (and stronger) interference, like thunders and emf noise from engines itself??
7. How about building a seperate sealed cubicle (sound proof too) for those who need to call every 5 min?
8. Why don't educated people tell these retards to shut up and do some other useful research?
1. Dig up a story. Any story. 2. Read its most sensationalist part (usually the start and end paras) 3. Make a breif summary out of those parts only, making sure that it sounds more like psuedoscience (This is needed so that we get more posts and slashdot gets its revenue, ya bread n butter stuff) 4. Dont forget to add a question mark at the end of your subject. (You have 67% more chances of getting the story posted this way) 5. Click Submit.
They should have considered a control group with some other _interactive_ toy along with a group with a robot pet. I guess the results would have been same.
Greetings from an earthling ! How are you doing up there. Well so far we have not managed to achieve fusion inside a lightbulb, we just heat something inside it so that it emits light. Pl beam down your tech asap. And in exchange we offer you some of our lightbulbs, just in case....
Doesn't make sense to me. The processor is responsible for most of the heat (and gpu, for some), so why not isolate it and put it inside a sealed container full of oil, instead of making a mess of whole box. It would be a problem connecting it to the mobo, but thats nothing big.
And why cooking oil? We have special purpose cooling oils for such jobs.
Since you are a historian, I'm sure you must have seen that old ideas die only when old people holding on to them die.
Theory of biological evolution is no different from any other scientific theory. It has inaccuracies and weaknesses, or we may discover such in future. New theories or varients will be proposed and slowly something more accurate will replace it. But thats not going to happen in a few months or even in few years. It takes time, may be a generation for example. For that duration scientists are going to dearly hold on to their beliefs, especially the old guys. Its nothing unusual and nothing special about biological evolution in particular.
While this is going on, we expect that the scientific community carries on with their business as usual and we also expect the cults or 'closed belief' systems to keep opposing them (as they have always done with any ideas, scientific or not, that conflict with their beliefs or even those that try to state the same belief in different terms). But its irresponsible for the ones proposing changes in old theory to hurry things up (for who knows what purpose) and even provide a chance to cults/religious abusers etc to take advantage of it (which you see has resulted in one idea being forced on another, a trademark of religion). They should have stated their ideas and should have waited for things to become better for them, as they have always done and succeeded.
And for those holding on to the inaccuracies to ensure their theory lives, should remain busy with their work and hope for the best instead of performing an even more irresponsible act of diluting the theory by bringing it on the same level of a religious idea, by defending its 'truthfulness' using law-system or this childish announcement of it being a winner of the year.
I personally feel that, ID, even if very much inaccurate an unscientific, holds a status of a simple theory in general, and should not be opposed consciously. Rather it should be left to die a natural death just like all other weak theories. But what we see here is a drama created by abusers of public innocence(=supidity), for their own lowly purposes, and real science guys as well as real believers of a faith standing by and watching helplessly.
I dont know what these americans are up to, but they are watering down science by announcing such things. Overreactions such as these are giving much more importance to ID and such beliefs, than they actually deserve.
You are blowing into the fire of religion and ignorance rather than letting it burn out and die slowly.
Chimp-1: "I figured it out just in a minute that there were so many redundant steps involved in getting that banana, right after looking at the setup for the first time. And knew what the experimenters wanted to see"
Chimp-2: "Then why did you take 4 weeks and 200 trials to show the results ???. They think that we are retarded "
Chimp-1: "What do you mean why? Do you know of any better way to get a month of banana supply for free? "
the chimps were able to figure out and eliminate the redundant steps,
Yes, thats very interesting. It suggests that immitating seemingly useless tasks or following the exact directions without applying reasoning prematurely, has some evolutionary advantage, compared to just focusing on immediate rewards.
Assuming that they actually applied reason and it was not a result of just learning by hit and trial, it shows that adult chimps must have lost the ability to just "play through" the game, and focused on the reward instead. In fact grown up humans also show this behaviour.
The ability to perform tasks in a noval way comes from delibrately not reasoning in the old way, and sometimes follow redundant or even wrong steps, before coming up with a totally new way.

Polluting is a short term solution, on the lines of - if you can't stop them, annoy them.
It will only result in more sophisticated clients. Some features which may circumvent this method are - -Rating : polluters can also artificially rate their files high, but assuming that pirates outnumber them by thousands, its highly useful.
-Hashing : polluters can easily create and hash their files, but this will stop them from polluting existing stuff.
-Preview : preview-before-download is most effective way of checking if a file is valid.Polluters can keep the starting part of a file good while messing the rest of it, so preview statring from any random place in the file can be implemented.
-Blocking : autoblocking a user if he has a lot of wrong files.
-Chat : asking the user about the file's quality. You cant expect a polluter to sit 24x7 in front of his servers chatting with millions.
-Voice and music recognition : the s/w may evolve so much that it will recognize any speech and music information present in the file and will warn if not found. Same can be done with images.
-Encryption : a trusted network can start encrypting the files, if client provides such a feature.
-Redundancy : a p2p network can have dedicated servers to copy bits of files and place them on client machines. A million copies can beat a few polluted ones.
Thomas Hesse, told the BBC that the company was 're-evaluating' its current methods.
Which means they are trying to come up with more robust methods of copy protection. The cheap tricks are turning back to bite their asses.
If they make it hard enough for masses to copy something, they open new oppurtunities for people skilled enough to crack it and ask for some money in return of their "services".
Let the DRMless CD industry bloom in China or some place like that.
If you are afraid that it will be useless, just bundle a simple C/C++ complier with a simple IDE and a good ebook on programming, and just watch it as it make waves.
Students are curious, a toy which makes many more toys is the most addictive one. When you cant play heavy games/surf etc on a machine, you start programming....thats how it starts.
I guess the author never really leaves his room/basement/cabin/cave often, because 84% of the people in world still don't know what internet is, how it looks and what it eats.

Is it so difficult to disable the USB ports ?
Its a standard policy to disable floppy, CD-RW, USB, COM, LPT etc on a machine having sensitive information.
Looks like a sponsered study by Sony. ;-)

Reminds me of Marcel Vogel of IBM, who discovered a method to age wines in seconds using quartz crystals. Unfortunately its seen as psuedoscience.
