  3. Re:There was never any reason for consoles to exis on Will Consoles Merge Back Into PCs? · · Score: 1

But that's just it. It *wont* do the same thing the consoles do. I play console games because I'm tired of monkeying with the PC. I use my PC for work, web, etc. I use my Xbox for games. Wanna play a game? Pop it in and play. No setup. No fuss. Just enjoy. There's also almost no possibility that the game will have difficulty with YOUR system. (The slight exceptions being poorly developed, quickly released games. This rarely happens with good titles, so it's really not a major consideration.)

And it'll be a good tilt more than $100 more to get a PC that'll do what an Xbox360 can do. To match the capabilities (graphically) of an Xbox360, right now, you'll need about a $600 machine (not including monitor, operating system). The xbox is $300.

I understand that that $600 machine can do more than play games, but for that extra flexibility, you'll also need to mess with it. Driver updates... windows updates... anti-virus... anti-spyware... blah blah blah. Oh, and don't forget the installs... How I loathe the installs...

I use Linux as my PC, so I avoid most of the cruft of computing, but Linux, sadly, just doesn't cut the mustard for gaming. Thus, I game with consoles.

If they kept making the good ol' phones, no one would have any reason to buy a new phone (other than the occasional washing machine incident).

Manufacturers make new versions of new products to resell customers on something they already have. The only way you can usually convince someone to re-buy your product is to provide an "improved" model.

As consumers we are very much used to the idea of the "upgrade." From computers and cars to televisions and video game systems, we can't seem to be able to just buy one and stick to it. It's not our fault though, the industry set it up that way.

If electronics manufacturer made a product that would last 50 years, have a modular extension system that guaranteed compatibility with all upcoming products for that timespan, and could be done at a marketable price (see: not cheap), they would have a big boom of business, then die. There would be no reason for people to purchase products from them anymore, and they would go out of business.

It's not just bad for the manufacturer either. It's terrible for the consumer as well. If said 50-year product's manufacturer wasn't around to produce modules that would extend its compatibility, then who is going to make the modules? Third parties could probably fill the gap, but there would be no guarantee that their modules would live up to the quality that the original manufacturer intended.

And there's the fact that those third parties probably contributed to the demise of the companies anyway. It's what happened to printer manufacturers... HP hasn't made a good InkJet in 5 years. They stopped bothering when people started buying ink from other companies.

Yes, webtv failed. Webtv failed because their entire business was balanced on the aspect of browsing the web from your tv.

Nintendo is hardly balancing anything on this. They are offering the web browsing feature optionally and all the other features are merely extras.

I think this pushes nintendo closer to the goal they have set for attracting non-gamers, though.

I mean, how long does it take for that $250 dell to boot up? And you have to worry about spyware and adware (not that I know if nintendo will or will not suffer similar problems, but it's a controlled platform, so let's give them the benefit of the doubt for a sec). I'm willing to bet that the wii boots up just as fast as an xbox 360, if not faster.

What this basically gives the non-gamer is a quick easy way to browse the web without "Getting on the computer". It's not the center feature of the system, but it's a nice extra. I know i'll be using it.

How about those other features? If the news and weather agents are any good, I'm certainly excited about that. And think of the possibilities. If this software was written for the wii, why can't nintendo make more software like this? Why can't a third party do it? Think of the possibilities.

It's pretty excited for me, and I'm buying it for the games.

$250 isn't really that much money.

But I honestly don't understand what all the fuss is aboot. I mean, you could put it in a generic black VCR box and I'd buy it if it had good games. I mean, you don't usually spend a whole lot of time admiring the looks of your consoles. Most gamers spend their time admiring the games themselves.

Unless, of course, you're a case modder... then I guess that I could understand to some degree console chassis admiration. But other than that, I think it's really silly.

Nitrogen is mostly inert. At room temperature, nitrogen is very inert. At really high temperatures, it can be reactive, which is why it's bad to have nitrogen present when welding Ti. The atmosphere of the earth contains something like 70% nitrogen, so welding Ti with air present is a bad thing. We also have oxygen and such in the air which will also readily react.

Argon is even more inert than nitrogen, although not completely inert. It wont form any chemical compounds with Ti, so it is used extensively in welding Ti.
