I am surprised at the number of Ron Paul responses. NOT! I do have to agree with Slashdot on this topic. I have been an avid supporter of Ron Paul since he got in office as a congressman. He advocates Freedom. A message that is taken lightly in today's world. Freedom has been taken away by fascism in light of the 9/11 attacks, in the false name of security.
As a geek, and as a founding fathers supporter, Christian, southerner, and as a 2nd amendment die hard conservative liberal, I take advocating Ron Paul very seriously, and I believe that if the US wants its freedoms back, and the constitution reinstated that Ron Paul is an absolute must.
So lets get out there, and vote in the GOP primary, and take America back. If you ever see this message Dr. Paul, I want you to know that my family is praying for you, and America.

Purchasing hundreds, or thousands of dollars worth of hardware just to maintain 'SOME COMPANY's' licensing scheme seems pretty damn stupid to me. Why would any company in their right mind, spend that much money to maintain another company's so called 'anti piracy efforts'. Why can't microsoft pony up their OWN cash to maintain their OWN problems. Everyone knows they have the money. Sorry, but forking over money to protect someone elses delusional 'anti-priacy-scheme', that I might not even agree with in the first place is is not a solution. Microsoft needs to tackle their own problems instead of trying to get others to do so. Not even an wild animal would imprison itself, why would a human?
The entire idea is right out of 1984. If you object to that idea and want to mod this down, then good luck with your 10 minute hate.

I personally use a Linksys WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT. They are a complete solution for work environments, and good for home as well. HP/Compaq is the worst by far. Ever seen an HP from walmart? Or one of those substandard Compaqs? They come with Wildtangent, and backweb spyware installed from the factory. The machines out of the factory take no less than 10 minutes to finish their 'first time setups'. They want you to buy the games, so then you will be bound to the spyware. Most users are dumb enough to leave it on there, and assume its not spyware, and so trust the F500 company like a family member. Some users are so dumb that they 'want' the spyware on there so they can play the crappy card games that came installed on it. HP installs a toolbar on the top that relies on backweb spyware to function. Every time one of these damn things comes into my shop, the first thing I do is run toolbar cop, and hijack this on them, and blow the startup away while in safe mode, and replace norton-ware with AVG. I do not appreciate waiting 5 minutes for a new machine to boot up, especially when it has only 256mb ram, and 64 of it used for video. I have machines that are 7 years old that came with more ram than that. It should be ILLEGAL to load Spyware on a machine from the factory.

The fact the the Gates foundation invests into questionable industries is perfect.
I had to make a 2nd post because I agree with you on this. It is well known, however forgotten due to the current Bush administration that the Gates foundation donated to Al'Kida 3 years before the Sept 11 attacks. They fully funded the attack with $11,000 and gave to Bin Laden as a charitable donation, supposedly unknowingly. I remember seeing it on a BBC news block.
To Bill Gates the poor child is just a Tax Write off. Bill Gates formed the foundation for this purpose. He even said so himself at a conference years ago. Absolute power corrupts Absolutely, and those who gain power are afraid to loose it.
Anyone want to see the percentages? Lets say Gates earns $40 billion a year. Ok, Now. Lets say randomly, he gives away 2 million to x charity. Thats only 1/20,000 th of his dough. I take home $70,000 a year after taxes, bills etc... Now once a week I give away $100 to charity out of my pocket with cash. Which is roughly %12 - %13 of what I make. Why do I do this? Maybe one day it will help some poor kid with cancer get a treatment of some kind. $5,300 can make a difference in a child's life.
Bill Gates HAS the money to make a difference, but does it make him look like a good person? Percentage wise, no it does not.
I remember as a child reading the tale in the Bible where the old woman gave one token of what she had, and it was everything she had. While the rich men dropped their tokens in the bucket at the temple. Jesus told everyone that the old woman had given more than any one of them.
If Bill Gates wants to be so high, and holy, he should give up that $40 billion, and make a REAL difference in the world as a whole. With 40... billion...dollars (dr evil grin) you could bring an entire 3rd world country out of poverty. So NO, Gates is not doing good enough.
Vista still has all the games and applications people use, most not available on any version of OS X.
Most businesses don't care about games. As Microsoft's continued move to game consoles helps my strategies more, and more. Most businesses want to have easy access to their financial information and sell what they have. For the small business owner OS X is ideal, and I have deployed several iMac Core 2 Duos at business sites, replacing the far dated XP/Dos systems. In pharmacies we often deploy Linux based servers that run their core applications, and write scripts for OS X that automatically bring up the login to their Linux box to run their terminal applications via SSH.
I have been working on Windows replacement strategies for 3 years, and have so far converted more than %20 of my customer base from windows to another platform, mostly OS X and Linux. One or 2 scenarios involve FreeBSD, and Solaris. The next step is finding solutions to replace, and convert data from 3rd party software vendors that have little, or no support, and attempt to charge for support when their software is corroded with bugs. Ridding of these shoddy software vendors are my next target, which will cover %60 of my user base, which is about 800 businesses in Mississippi.
The replacement costs, or TCO is as estimated.
Average Dell = $700 Windows Costs = $250 Yearly Crap Cleaning = $300 (per machine)
Replacement options: Average iMac = $1200 Average Linux Costs = $40 Yearly Maintenance = $40 (per machine if at all)
As for Vista, its happy hunting, and fair game for me. The TCO of Vista will be so high for many small businesses that when they see the numbers they will more than likely convert quickly. Microsoft continues yet again to hack off their own foot in a Monty Python skit while claiming "Its just a flesh wound", while I will continue the battle, and the fight will be mine.
Sorry, I hate to be the one to bring this up. But you mentioned "Windows ONLY" websites. The sites don't work with anything but that one OS, and the downloads are infected with DRM on top of that. Until any of the sites mentioned WORK, then I will not use them.
So I have to be the parrot and repeat what others have said so far. Pirate Bay, and Demonoid are my 2 movie download 'services'. They are the ones that allow you to practice your "FAIR USE" rights, and copy to media, CD, DVD, thumb drive, etc...
This is one thing I never do, is praise big companies. BUT, because of your listing of Realtek, and their site, I must praise Realtek in this instance. Ive bought several products with Realtek chipsets. Their continued support for Linux, and OS X, is why I keep coming back to them. Their NICs although cheap, are awesome for compatibility. I have a very cheap $8 10/100 NIC running in my 'hackintosh' because the original was zapped during a lightning storm. All but one of my servers run Realtek NICs in them, all of my servers run Slackware on Linux 2.6. I buy Realtek NICs by volume, and will continue to do so now with a grin on my face.
My Spam levels just dropped in half! SpamAssassin is not working near as hard as it was before Christmas. I feel for the guys out there fixing all the broken fiber.
If Linux was a car.... You could open the hood, and change motor to what you like. You could change the steering wheel, and the pedals, and the seats, and the hood color.... etc... The windows wouldn't be electric so you know the hand crank would work every time, and not hang. The car would cost $20k and last 400k miles. It would work on any road. You would never have an accident. Oh wait, that is a normal car....
If Windows was a car.... Your hood would be welded shut, and you couldn't work on the motor, much less change it out, the windows wouldn't work on voice command, but you could have the option of "Are you sure" before you roll up, or down the windows with a button. The Airbag would ask the same question as well. Your car would cost $300,000 and the motor would last 10k miles before you had to wipe it and reload the engine. Only the dealer could do this, and it would take 36 minutes, but would require a preliminary inspection that required the car to be flipped upside down, and the blue ray disk inserted. You would have to buy a new one to be compatible with the new roads every 5 years.
If MacOS were a car, you could do most of 1, but you would have to replace your car once every 2 years, but if you choose not to, then your radio stops working, but you will have the pleasure of knowing that although your car costs $50k, it will last 400k miles as well. (IE: A Volvo) Although you could get an extended warrenty for $2,390 a year called the AppleCar plan.
This is a question based on lack of research. There are many things you can do.
1. Dump c:\windows\prefetch, and lock it where it can't read/write. 2. Use winlite to strip out crap like WMP, IE, ActiveX, and everything else you don't use, NO OS shouldn't require these things to function. 3. Use a winlogon crack. Believe it or not this makes a speed difference on bootup. 4. Use XP pro not home, so u can do some of the stuff mentioned above. 5. use toolbarcop, and remove everything in there. 6. Don't use Norton, or Mcafee. They bloat the system down like there WAS a virus on it. Norton is considered a virus by my repair shop, and is removed upon exiting the building. 7. Turn off system restore, and dump c:\windows\system32\dllcache 8. Don't use cheapo HP printers and install their garbageware. 9. The result? My build of XP. It will be on piratebay in a few days. It is 450mb. Upon install it is 900mb. 10. Avoid venders like HP, compaq, and Dell that load spyware on the machine out of the factory. Don't use factory disks. FTF (Format the Fucker) and load XP from scratch with a Winlite modd'd copy, and load the drivers. Then load your software. 11. Avoid walmart PCs. Especially the compaqs that take 20 minutes to boot up, and are substandard to a 10 year old machine. Then charge $80 an hour to work on them. The cheaper they are. The more i charge. 12 WHEN YOU ARE DONE. Ghost it to DVD or CD. Then boot from that CD/DVD, and re-ghost (I use ghost 7 corporate) the hard drive from the CD / DVD. This makes a huge difference because it aligns the data on the HD correctly. Try it, and you will see.
My largest argument is WHY shoould anyone have to do all the crap I mentioned above to make Windows run decent? My 7 year old mac takes 10 seconds to boot from a clean install of Tiger.
when Linux can have the type of compatibility with the every-day apps that Microsoft provides
None of my apps run on windows. Therefor windows is useless to me. Until the time comes when windows can run software like Soundtrack Pro, Final Cut, Shake, AppleWorks, VisualHub, MacTheRipper, Toast 7 Titaanium, Fire.app, Audio Hijack Pro, iPhoto, iWeb, and all my other every day applications, such as the tools I use remotely via SSH, then forget it. Windows isn't compatible at all. I don't think anyone here in this office has any use for Windows since it is almost worthless for what we do with Video and Audio.
When MS has the type of compatibility with every-day apps that OS X, and *BSD/Linux systems provide, maybe it will respectable OS. Until then, it is just overpriced junk that won't run anything.
Conveninent home OS that everybody can use
UNIX is still king regardless of what everybody says.
Here we had massive problems with Diebold TSx systems this morning. No, im not a poll worker, but in a small town, talks get around very fast... within hours. I was told that there was ONE person, ONE person dealing with problems on these systems between 5 counties in Mississippi, and that she had to be in Benton county twice to deal with bad optical scan machines, and once here. Here in Tippah County, we have 3 TSx systems for my district, all but one failed this morning. And there were reports of failures/problems in other districts too.
The machines print out paper ballots on a roll when they are done, and we do NOT get to see the roll, NOR do we get a copy of the vote we cast. So its pretty much up to whoever runs the machines to see what goes on, and that is what I don't trust. I voted democrat across the board, but voted libertarian once since he favors net neutrality. For circuit judge, I voted for a friend of mine that showed up on the ballot, and myself 4 times since there were no choices but one for each, and I didn't care for the persons running since they were all up tight republicans, and mostly rich old lawyers.
It is 1:22pm here, and the polls are open until 7:00, I am waiting to see if there are any more failures. My gf works at the local news paper, so I get to know whats going on quicker than everyone else. They are running an article on the failures.
If the eyes can see it, it can be copied. If the ears can hear it, it can be copied. If your mind can imagine it, it can be made. All it takes is time.
That should keep those pesky terrorists out! I re-set my logs to rotate and remove every day. Now when the terrorists come knocking at my door asking for logs so they can find more terrorists, I can say sorry sir, but I cannot self incriminate.

7. Turn off system restore, and dump c:\windows\system32\dllcache
Thank you JaS.

And they let it past airport security?
That should keep those pesky terrorists out! I re-set my logs to rotate and remove every day. Now when the terrorists come knocking at my door asking for logs so they can find more terrorists, I can say sorry sir, but I cannot self incriminate.
