  1. Reverse the premise on Poverty May Affect the Growth of Children's Brains · · Score: 1

Every time I see a study like this, I reverse the premise and see if it makes sense. In this case, I would ask this. Instead of poverty cause low brain development, does low brain development cause poverty. I would argue that much of IQ is inherited, either through nature or nurture. To put it bluntly, stupid parents tend to have stupid kids. Its also clear that a lower IQ very much limits your earning potential - thus puts your family in poverty.

So, I think this study is balogne. All it says is poor people tend to be on the lower end of the IQ scale, and so are their kids.

I grew up near Altoona. Google maps says 3 miles from the site of the data center. There is no chance of flooding in Altoona. As the name suggests, its a relatively high spot - and not near any rivers' flood plain. The biggest threat is tornadoes. Not nearly as much as Oklahoma, but we still have them. Look up Parkersburg, IA tornado of 2008 for a near town-wide leveling by an EF5 tornado.

  6. spouting FUD for /this/ reason on Tesla Will Discontinue the Roadster · · Score: 1

The person who wrote the summary probably wants to create a dip in Tesla stock prices so he can buy-in cheaper. The other note I want to make is that one of the reasons that the roadster must be discontinued is that Lotus is discontinuing its Elise that the roadster is based on, so unless they start making their own chassis, Tesla has no choice but to discontinue their roadster. Now, with the Model S, they aren't reliant on anybody else for the chassis, so they should be in better shape.

My co-worker's husband had a LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) implanted in his chest called the HeartMate II. It took enough work away from his heart that he had no pulse. The EMTs had to be trained that if they responded to a call for him, he would have no detectable pulse.

Now this is different in that it didn't replace his heart, but its a continuous pump, and results in no pulse.

  8. Re:Oil not equal to nuclear on McCain Backs Nuclear Power · · Score: 1

While I tend to agree that increasing electricity production will have little effect on the liquid fuel (oil) crisis, there are 2 legitimate arguments to support the opposite. 1. If you replaced the natural gas power plants with nuclear, or solar, or wind, etc, natural gas could potentially be used to directly power cars. See the Honda Civic GX. 20% of the world's electricity comes from natural gas. 2. If pure electric cars (like the Mitubishi iMiEV & Subaru R1e) were to come to market, generating more electricity would reduce demand for gasoline.

I commute from a city to a small town an hour away. They can't get decent IT/IS people here because the good people commute or move to the city for more money. Put in your time making less money for a non-profit and/or small town company, and get something good to put on your resume, and then you can be pickier about your employer.

FYI, If you don't have people skills, you'll never be a IT/IS manager.

The difference here being that Microsoft Internet explorer is an integrated part of Windows, and is inseparable from the operating system, while Safari (if you want to compare apples to apples) is "just another app" within OS X. As far as I know, you can remove Safari from OS X with no adverse affects on the operating system as a whole.

If you want to talk about bundling the OS with the hardware, there's a big difference there, in that Apple makes both the hardware and the software (I know that Apple doesn't actually manufacture CPU's etc, but they sell an assembled product with the Apple name on it), and Microsoft is not in the hardware business - for the most part (I say as I'm typing on a Microsoft branded keyboard).

Anyway, with bundling the OS with the hardware is the Microsoft is throwing their weight around and blackmailing PC manufacturers to bundle EVERY computer they sell with Microsoft's operating system, where Apple is not involved is such blackmail with other hardware manufacturers.
