  1. WTF! on Data Theft and Corporate Irresponsibility? · · Score: 2, Insightful

WTF are people thinking?? I have a corporate laptop myself and there is NOTHING on it. No files with hundreds of names and SSN's on it. NOTHING. I could totally SCREW my hard drive and would loose nothing of value to the company. I could have my laptop stolen and there would be NO data of value to anyone on it(go ahead....take my pictures, I don't care). Anytime I need to work, I remote desktop to my desktop which, other then non secure departmental info, has NO COMPANY RECORDS ON IT! Granted, we have no policy that specifies what is ok and what is not ok. The problem is usually NOT the computer guys in this situation....it's clueless users trying to do a little work at home and WHUPS.....the laptop gets ganked....

    Few things....

    1. Treat the laptop like it's your own. Make sure it's always in a safe place. If you have to park in a shady area, take it with you.

    2. If you absolutely MUST have data on the laptop, it should be corporate policy that the file is encrypted and passworded. The compny needs ot invest in security software. Maybe something that trashes the file once the password has been entered incorrectly more then 3 times.

  2. This is the right decision on Shuttle to Launch Despite Objections · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's apparant, to me, there's NO way to make the Shuttle 100 percent safe....there's no way to make ANY spacecraft 100 percent safe. Space is a hostile environment. The astronauts know this. One thing that cannot be disputed is that the shuttle has flown before with foam ramps falling off the shuttle. What happened to Columbia was very unfortunate, but in my book, it's a freak accident. There are so many variables that had to happen JUST RIGHT in order for the vehicle to be lost. All that can be done is try to minimize it. It can't be prevented. What happens if a Heron or some other big bird is in the way when the shuttle launches? Odds are, a BIRD can bring the shuttle down just as easy as a piece of foam. The odds are very low that this will happen but NOT zero. Does that mean we don't launch?? No.

What I do see happening is a return to the traditional capsule like format. It could even be done in a reusable format MUCH easier and less prone to problems then the shuttle. We have to keep in mind....space is different. We can't send airplanes into space. We have to send spacecraft into space.

Come now....Windows 98/98SE/ME use a kernel (DOS FOLKS!) that has not been impotant for quite sometime now. Do any Linux Kernel developers still work on the 2.0 kernel?? Does Red Hat still patch Red Hat 6?? NO!

Everyone ASSUMES that Microsoft is dropping support just because it's too broke and that probably isn't even CLOSE to the truth. The real reason is likely a combination of the two. From the archtecture basis, Windows 98/98SE/ME are UNSECURE! Microsoft has a much better chance of securing things with XP. That's not to say there's no holes in XP....there is. But the reason software is dropped from support is merely a business reason. When 99.9 percent of thier support calls are likely Windows XP or 2003 Server related, what sane person would choose to continue to patch something almost NOONE uses!

  6. Native Code will ALWAYS be there.... on The End of Native Code? · · Score: 1

Native code is going to always be around. Someone has to WRITE the Virtual Machines. C is STILL valuable after all of this time.

What you WILL find is that applications programming may all switch to Java or C#. The reason is it is very hard to have some of the traditional problems with programs with a properly coded JVM. Sure, buffer overflows can happen in the JVM, but it's way less likely to happen in Java/C#. That means the applications will need less work over time. With that said, the JVM's and the .Net Virtual Machine will still need programmers to write them and add to them. Kernels will still need to be written and X windows will still need to exist.

JUST because it's Open Source does not mean it's good or better then a closed product. I, for one, am willing to use closed software that works well for me.....ie if it did not read jpg's, I would not use it but since it does.....

Yes there's DigiKam. Yes there's Fspot. However people on Windows don't know how good those things are and when they move to Linux for the first time want to be as comfortable as they were in thier Windows World. Products like this allows you to stay functional and also allows you to be able to play and learn the new stuff. Maybe you will never use Digikam because Picasa is good enough. Maybe you will one day try Digikam or Fspot or whatever and decide you like it better. A win for Open Source. IN either case, you have a iwn for open source. Putting stuff down like this picasa release will only stop companies from wanting to make great software available on Linux. They will say well the linux community didn't appreciate us anyway so we're not going to spend the time and effort. You get more things with sugar then blood, spit and vinegar.
