This is the danger of everyone and there brother adding links to say help the tsunami survivors to their web pages. Everyone should have just link directly to the Red Cross web site or similar organization. This is why I have not donated anything yet because I want to be absolutely certain that when I donate the money, it goes to the right place. I will probably wait until the real money is needed. There's going to be alot of waste now and when everyone forgets about it is when the problem will really start. It will take YEARS to recover the area affected. It's not something that will even be over on December 26th of 2005. This is a once in a lifetime disaster for much of the world. The loss is tremendous. Unfortunately during times such as this, there's always some incredible assholes who think hey I will scam some people. As always, I give IN PERSON. Walk in to the Red Cross in your town and just give them a check or cash. Only then will you know that a good percentage of your money will go where it's needed. Also, don't just give to the Red Cross now. They always need your money. Make it a yearly donation and increase it a bit when the Red Cross is in need of extra help for hurricanes, blizzards, earthquakes, tornadoes and terrorist attacks.

Better yet, if your technically inclined, get your ham license and donate sometime to ARES by training in events and field day. Then when disaster strikes in your area, you'll be ready. I used to think it was ridiculous, but after a bad ice/snowstorm took out people's electric and 2-3 inches of rain falling right after that cause flooding in and around Columubus we'd never be needed but in just 14 days we had 2 activations of ARES to staff the red cross shelters with communciators. I know it won't help the Tsunami victims, but then when something like this hits your town, you can not only donate your money but also your time.

HMC runs Linux with some special kernel extensions and programs for managing the server. After the server is up, the HMC can literally die and it would not matter. The HMC is a xSeries Xeon based machine. Not sure of the RAM in the HMC but I really don't care. It works so well, I don't have to use the HMC much.

  21. Nothing new and error in the parent on Next G5 Multitasks Operating Systems · · Score: 2, Insightful

Not just mainframe systems support LPARING. We have 3 LPARS running on our big Power 5 570 server. It's a beefy server. Plenty of ram (106 GB split between LPARS) and 16 processors to divide between LPARS. When AIX 5.3 comes out, you can order a new feature code that adds fractional LPARING....that is you can create a LPAR with as little as 1/10th of a processor. It's not surprising that the next 970 has this built in it. The real competition for UNIX servers in the near future will both be powered by IBM chips. That is, Apple, and IBM. IBM better be careful in how much power they give the 970's because IBM could get a real run for it's money if Apple exploits this ability.

I trust MD5 Checksums more then I do a page that says it's signed by Microsoft, Verisign, or whoever. How many of us have to isntall drivers on Windows XP that pop up and say they are not certified by Microsoft? Utter crap. Code signing works the same was as trusting the website you download the code from. If you don't trust DePaul's website, then that's fine. If your really antsy about making sure what you run is absolutely the code being distrbuted by Mozilla.org, you have to know the MD5 Checksum that Mozilla got when it ran MD5. This also assume you put trust into the MD5 sumer you use. Trust is not something that can be readily handled by software. You can use tools to verify things, but if the tool is faulty and gives you the answer you expect, then it's possible you can still run code that is hostile. Even if you say but it has a Verisign certificate means nothing too because even the criminals can buy certificates or even steal valid ones. The only way you can be certain is if you download only from a web site you trust, or put your trust in the Mozilla project that they only have mirrors that they trust or that they verify are ok. Any of these situations or tools like MD5 sumers are not liekly to even be known by the semi computer illiterate. They also would not know or care about signed software either. They do what they do in real life....they trust IBM and other big companioes including Microsoft although Microsoft is gradually loosing their trust if they have not completely lost any trust they had. My brother has even switched to Firefox but not because of the security features.....he switched because of tabbed browsing and faster web page rendering.
