His friend probably felt uncomfortable with the rich man's effortless and pointless consumerism, but his friend wasn't actually denied other opportunities when it came right down to it.
Naw... one man's wealth is another man's poverty. Also, in this scenario, if I were the rich man, and my friend was a budding photographer, I would buy my friend the camera and let him take some professional pictures of my dog. But I find that rich people usually have rich friends, and poor people usually have poor friends. Because I'm poor as dirt, and I'm not friends with a single rich person, nor do I really know any personally.
It's nothing for me to take a friend out to dinner when he's broke. I'll spend easily 5% of my income on that, because I care about my friends. 5% for me might be a couple meals. For someone wealthy, it might be a fancy SLR camera.
If you were in the Army, then you have military training. I would consider my 2nd Amendment rights very carefully. There are a lot of people being fucked over so a few rich assholes can live like kings. I'm not sure why we put up with the situation, really. There's way more of "us" than "them". It should be a simple matter to distribute the wealth more evenly. What's stopping us?
I use Opera on my WM5 device, and I've never had a problem with going to any site. Missing are java and flash, but I wonder if that's a deficiency or a blessing, sometimes.
Not with the availability of broadband we have today. A lot of people only have ONE option for broadband. Some have two. It's a rare few who have more than two. In a Free Market, there would be many providers all competing with each other. Unless you have that, there's no "free market" and the market isn't going to fix anything.
I do this a lot:
-Copy text from word.
-Paste to notepad.
-Copy from notepad.
-Paste back to new word document.
Also, PDF -is- really easy. You just print to it as a printer. And if not, every Windows machine with office should have the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer you can print to as part of the package. And if not, there's the XPS document writer you get with some update off windows update.
Tests. Standardized tests. Based on that, you get your "points". If you don't know jack-shit about xxxxx, you don't get to vote on it. Of course, computerizing the process could easily provide you all the information you need to be more knowledgeable on any given topic than most of our current lawmakers. Ah, but you're reading slashdot. So you probably already are. xD
And if we took out the huge profits the record companies are making, and distributed them to more artists, we'd have more and better music. The record companies should be a service to the artist, not the other way around. Due to how the huge pockets of major labels have the industry running, it's extremely hard to make a living without signing contract. That's not because it has to be that way, but because the record companies have a vested interest in making and keeping it that way. Sure, artists could not sign, but then they're left digging ditches as you say. I think hurting the "music industry" in any way is a good thing. People won't stop making good music. File sharing is as much for all the artists that don't or won't sign, for whatever reason. The people who should be able to make a fair living practicing their art, but can't because of "the system".
It's a little like a modern day Boston Tea Party. If that's not a good American value, I don't know what is.
To someone in the right, people in the middle are, in fact left. I consider myself left of the left, and to me, even the left seems like the right. So Fox is way right, but all the others are pretty right, too. Heck, I think the democrats are too far right, really. I think Kucinich ought to be the least liberal candidate we have running, in either party.
I have AKU 3.5, and that feature isn't there. It's the Hemi_C ROM. Are you sure it's standard 3.5, or something that most people making 3.5 ROMs add in?
Actually, the windows update is "blazingly new" feature. Have you tried to "update" a WM5 phone? The only way to do it is flash in a new ROM. And usually, the cell carriers won't provide such a thing unless they absolutely must. Sure, the "community" puts some roms together with the updates, but it's a huge pain to figure out. Mostly pouring over forums for hours and hours, and understanding the technology. Not for joe user at all.
You assume the record companies and the artists who produce the music are the same entity, but they are not. While the record company may "own" the music, I still consider it the artist's music. There's no reason the middle man should be making most of the profits.
What you're saying is that if I don't want to contribute to a system I morally object to, I don't get to enjoy some of society's most well-regarded pieces of art. That's exactly what the record companies would say. The thing is, I don't have to accept that answer, thanks to technology. I'm no longer powerless in this situation.
Indeed, sir. This has to be one of the most reckless uses of science I've seen. And for the sake of what? Making the rich a little bit richer. Just when are we going to, as a society, put our foot down and say enough is enough to these stop-at-nothing corporations trying to pad their shareholders pockets just a little bit more?
I think the GP has it right. Why should I care if a parasitic industry whose owners live like kings on the hard work, ingenuity, and art or a few talented individuals loses money? If I like something, I'll buy tickets to the tour, or I'll buy some merchandise from the artist. Then the artist gets the compensation. The record companies call the shots, have all the money, and decide which artists we get to hear. They take advantage of laws they've lobbied extensively for in order to maintain their power.
I think this, like most other instances where a small caste of people benefit wildly from the work of someone else, will all come to an end through technology, and the richest individuals will find themselves living only as well as everyone else -- and for the everyone else, this will be quite an improvement.
That's what file sharing means to me. It's a non-violent way to say NO. I don't think most people who participate would present their case exactly like this, but it's the underlying theme.
Whenever you can explain how to build sentient biological human-androids, FTP engines, and massive spaceships, get back to me on how their computers operate.
...but she, like many other users, will not be too keen on the idea of having to spent hours researching a problem that pertains to a single bit of software.
This is one of the main reasons I don't recommend linux to my friends and family. I'm glad someone else actually acknowledges this is often the situation.
As for the x64 comments, yes, 32 bit would have been a better way to go, but I've use XP, 2k3, and Vista 64 bit, and all of them also have a 32 bit browser (IE7 or FF) that runs flash content just fine. You can actually open IE 32bit or IE 64bit. What's preventing a linux 64bit OS from doing the same thing?
I assure you, 27 years is well beyond your state's statute of limitations.

Whatever you are smoking, sir, I should also like to partake.

How is it any different from rich investors working Joe at minimum wage so they can have a standard of living far above that of Joe?

There may also be less smart people to solve the problems that the population, of whatever size, might face.

So you prefer to work hard and get a less-than-equal share, while the wealthiest individuals don't work at all, and live as kings?
Why are they selling something that should belong to each citizen equally? I say the throw out the bidding and do a big referendum on how it's used.

Two words come to mind: Second Amendment
And you think that same company that dug up the orange soil wasn't raking in the money, or doesn't have their own team of lawyers?
Come down from tower, Mary. You can shop at Wal-Mart like the rest of us "cheap" worthless plebeians.
