I recently installed a small DS212+ for a small office of 5 using around 1tb of data. The NAS was chosen as a low cost option but after running it for a few weeks it's actually better than a windows box for this use case, mostly because of its excellent software and ease of use. It has a built in VPN server and access to a host of 3rd party apps. Highly recommended.
I doubt very much we will find another planet with a breathable atmosphere given we (read earth life) had to make our current atmopsphere ourself over billions of years. In fact the oxygen in our atmosphere is actually poisionous to most life, the few that survived the plant worlds "attack" evolved to deal with it.
I personally could cope with a planet at 0 degees C and a 1000 millibar pressure. That way at least I only need an oxygen mask and a coat rather than a full space suit.
Where do you think all that coal and oil came from? We ARE using solar power, just OLD solar power. Hopefully by the time the old solar power runs out we'll know how to use new solar power.
i can just see it now... your mom calls from her vacation abroad: "Hey! How you doing? Can you turn your laptop on i want to show uncle henry your photos of the wedding", "mom, it's 3am... i wish i had put my photos on flckr!"
Perhaps. But what if your phone had a USB socket (mine already does) and a HDMI socket? Carry your "laptop" around with you everywhere and use it as it should be - a communication device... BUT when you want a bigger screen, find the nearest 1080p panel and bam, big screen. Plug in a keyboard and mouse when you want to use it for office / school work.
In my mind a device the size of a cell phone but as powerful as todays netbooks is something of a holy grail. Make a decent universal cradle so everyone has one and you can "hotdesk" as much as you want. Your whole workstation fits in your pocket and of course you can still use it without the boltons.
I wonder if Mozilla know about this? Probably done with their consent as it can only be a good thing, but whats next? Firefox updates on Windows Update?
Dont underestimate the value that a userbase has. A piece of OSS that is fantastic is still useless if it has a negligable userbase. The more users the better the community driven support and the whole thing snowballs. Large companies tend to look for large projects and these large companies are the ones who CAN contribute to the movement. But it all starts with the small guys who can use the thing for free and start the snowball rolling.
why wouldn't Dell do it? It may be gender biased and un-pc but if it the amount of sales outweighs the cost of creating the website then it's done it's job. Business 101
It's a fair comment, but not many managers can see 10 years ahead when sitting in the interview room. They want someone to fill the vacancy NOW, and there will be no shortage of applicants.
If you can get a job do so, if you can't (because of the "current economic climate") get a masters. But whilst you are doing your masters, keep looking for a job.
Given the choice between two candidates for a job: candidate A has 2 years experience doing the job they are going for, candidate B has zero experience of the job they are going for but has a piece of paper that says they have a masters, which would you choose? The guy that can do the job from day 1 and has a proven track record, or the guy that will need hand holding for 6 months to get him up to speed?
I have no issues with a company moving MEMS devices into mass production. This gives us better technologies and experience when it comes to manufacturing other MEMS devices.
Whilst MEMS devices are (a few?) orders of magnitude away from nanotechnology, I believe that MEMS devices will be a bridge technology to a post-scarcity society. How can that be a bad thing?
The more work we do at this scale the better.
I always recommend the W3 Schools web site for beginners. It's free and contains enough info to get anyone off to a good start.

Given how much of a time sink these games are the more that are on the market the more diluted the user base becomes.
What we could REALLY do with is something like a generic engine where users can interact with subgames, something like second life but more... fun?
That way people can go off and fight goblins in one subgame or go off and fly space craft in another sub game. The benefit being everyone is interacting in the same online "world".
Although who controls this one "master" MMO i have no idea. It needs to be opensource and distributed somehow.

Perhaps if you were starting on Mars you would need a chip fab, but these things can be run off tech the first world throws in the landfill.
The joy of open source means you can improve the designs and then everyone can benefit.
Anyone got a mirror?

"Microsoft's AV software is very good. It has low positives and generally scored quite well."

With a 42 minute meeting do you come out with the answer to life the universe and everything?
