  1. They should benchmark development time on Performance Benchmarks of Nine Languages · · Score: 2, Interesting

Someone should do a study on the time taken to design, implement and debug a resonably complex chunk of code under C++ and Java. I'm pretty sure that the result would show the huge advanatage of Java over C++.

  2. Re:When open source dies? on XFree86 Core Team Disbands · · Score: 1

Various open source projects move in and out of domancy all the time. Sorry i can't be bothered to dig up examples but it wouldn't take much looking on sourceforge or freshmeat to see that this is true.

My point was, as long as the source is available and someone has the motivation to do it, an open source project has a chance to continue. The same can not be said for proprietary software once the company selling and developing it decides to stop.

  3. Re:When open source dies? on XFree86 Core Team Disbands · · Score: 1

Well the fact that the source is still available means that people that rely on it and need it are free to continue developement if they so wish.

What happens when proprietary software dies? Hmm I thought so.

The advantage of getting a digital SLR is that you get instantaneouse feed back on your shot. This lets you experiment with different apature and shutter speed settings and learn how they affect the pictures. Rather that having to take the film in and having to wait to see how things turned out.

The problem with file synchronization that is solved by CVS and not by unison is that cvs will merge your changes. 19. Warning Will Robbinson on Security Affecting Microsoft's Bottom Line · · Score: 2, Insightful
Microsoft is smart enough to use their security flaws as the reason to grab total control of your machine. Palladium (or what ever they are currently calling it) means that they will establish a secure layer between the o/s and the hardware and in doing so, allow the o/s to enforce absolute control.

    What this means is
    • no virsus (theoretically)
    • no unregistered/unauthorized software or drivers.
    • elimination of cracked software.
    • elimination of unathorized files (read mp3, mpg, avi) in the name of DRM.

It's a great thing for them, it's a great thing for the RIAA, it's a great thing for the MPAA (sp?). It's a shit lousy thing for you. But they are going to give you a secure platform. Makes you wonder if they couldn't have planned things any better.
