    Completely agree.
Apple was open the same way with Xcode and developer tools for Mac platform - free IDE, SDK and no restrictions on nature of applications you can create. May be due to commercial interests, they are being very closed in the iphone ecosystem. Initial reluctance to open up the sdk, arbitrary selections on the apps you can distribute ( Considering Appstore is the only "legal" and future proof way to get apps on to iphone, I consider this very monopolistic*)
To add to this, Microsoft has licensed active sync to Apple and Google for iphone and android respectively.

OT,but being a long term apple user, I am currently having an identity crisis. The special hardware, quality of software and openness no longer applies. Does RDF wear-off with age or is it due to Steve's departure? :)

    * I know what monopolistic actually means, thank you!

"Or any future version" clause means the code can be forked and "the later version" license assigned. Existing code is never automatically license-upgraded ( I know it is not a word)

I do not think anybody will be interested in forking big projects unless they have the backing of a large group/any company.

That said, I think it is a non issue in this case as long as they do not intend to change Samba or KDE code in anyway.

I'm trying out digiKam currently.. It recognises my Nikon but does not identify the older fuji pro, though I could load photos as a flash drive after connecting my camera..
Unfortunately it does not measure up to aperture/iphoto or even what I've seen of picasa.. It could not convert my Fuji RAW format..again surprisingly snaps on Nikon with RAW worked..

Never used Fspot, so will surely try that..

to be fair, I need something like aperture to manage my snaps..even if that means spending 2K on a new mac..

I find bugzilla lacking in polish..Been using the test director for quite a long time at work and it seems very slick. I have used bugzilla only a few times [have raised some of the early ubuntu-vmware issues ]. Interestingly, feature by feature, it holds ground against the more [very] expensive counterpart. Bugzilla works well with firefox and safari - which I guess Test director may not due to few activex dependencies.

The reason why I felt this was I suggested bugzilla to a colleague in a different organisation and they were far from satisfied. A more intuitive gui and some pleasing css works would have saved the day for bugzilla.

Come to think of it, I could say that against many of the projects(FOSS in particular)... A bit more effort on UX could make a world of difference. Been testing office 2007 last few weeks and I'm very impressed. Just one of the apps in recent times whose UI made me feel why didn't I think of it. Just a pity that the guys who made Office 2007 were not more involved with Vista.
Now off to some much needed sleep....
