  1. I can speak to this topic in a strong way... on School Teaches 'Ethical Hacking' · · Score: 5, Insightful

You WILL NOT learn hacking, even in the context that they're teaching (subverting the security of computer systems), in a class. You may learn about all kinds of tools; and about steps and techniques to attempt to break into computers, but the real work is not in a classroom. I still believe this after taking SANS Track 4; which was excellent training, but did not drop me back on the street with the ability to be pen tester extraordinaire. It's like the commercial says: you get good with practice. I think that's part of the reasoning behind SANS's practical papers for their certifications - so you research, and PRACTICE, and learn things by doing. Now, let me add yet another disclaimer to my posts - practicing does not mean going out and writing malicious code and breaking into sites. Practice means taking your own little air-gapped network and exploring every aspect of the art that you have time and aptitude to learn. Real hacking, the essence, and I'm not trying to start a definition war here; is trying everything you can and learning everything you can - for good or for evil now; but you get the point.

I have 3 kids and the things they do to keep active are all fun. The things I'm doing to get in better shape (I wasn't overweight but 30 was starting to really show on me) are fun or I wouldn't be doing them...

When they come up with reliable, inexpensive biometrics; and combine them with digital certificates or encryption keys (pick your flavor) - I think we'll be far more secure. Now, this was a very small business and unfortunately went under but was a great experience when I did get to telecommute; but most recently I get the feeling that "telecommute", to employers, means "extra work you can do for me at night and on weekends".

That's funny; I get a lot of serious work done on mine - writing procedures and planning assignments for my team; scheduling work and personal meetings, using a variety of work-related tools such as IP calculators to check my work; and I keep some reference materials (like IDS signature definitions and the event codes for Cisco devices like firewalls) - right next to a few e-books so I can get some reading done in bed and/or waiting for my wife if I don't have a paper book handy. I am much more organized and keep all of my family's appointments - especially since I do a lot of the domestic work and take my son to the doctor, etc. I have a keyboard that snaps into the device and get a lot of 'wow' value out of my little m130 when I'm taking notes in a meeting or writing a quick poem or blurb for myself or a friend. I think with the right software, a keyboard and learning graffiti, a lot of people could get by without a laptop. How often do you print in a situation like that? I've recommended to one small business that they get PDAs with memory cards and use one computer with multiple accounts for syncing/uploading and printing documents for a very mobile crew they have. In recent years it has just seemed unprofessional or not acceptable to personalize your space; because it is work, not home. Now thankfully I have had a job (the one I was laid off from! wheee!) that I worked from home at; and my home office is very personalized. I also make sure to have a few of my toys that my child doesn't realize are there for him [expendable, so to speak] so he is given the special treat of getting to play with some of my things. My daily (for my 12 hour shift) ration of food and Cherry Skoal [after several crises where none of us could leave our desk for long I no longer smoke] comes with me in my backpack; and leaves. The one coffee cup of my very personal 20+ cup collection isn't exactly irreplacable but if something should happen [and you know what, despite some post-bubble anxiety and a little worry over my stupidity with my credit when i was younger, I don't think anything will], I could ask someone to get it for me.
