I am completely speculating here but I wonder if most of Halo 3 was being worked on during Halo 2 in order to be a launch title? That's the only title I would buy the '2' for - I only bought the XBOX for Halo 2 (even though I've bought and played many other games and my wife has logged as much time as me, surprisingly). I guess I should make a journal entry so it is appropriate for folks to reply with what they think the launch titles are going to be...
OWL http://owl.sourceforge.net is an open source multi-user document repository with a shallow learning curve (our 'tech' writers were able to figure it out and start organizing things in less than two hours).
Docushare is also great http://docushare.xerox.com/ds/. I worked for a 3rd Party VAR during version 1 - but it does cost. However; there is some significant third party support, including Micro Image Systems http://www.microimagesys.com. I will tell you that I worked for MIS [it's a 2-3 person company] a few years ago; they're very good people.
You may have the technology knowlege and could do helpdesk if you hadn't advanced beyond that type of work; and the business acumen because you must understand more than just technology - law, regulation, ethics, physical security, and attempting to show your superiors that they are getting an ROI. Then realize that to them you are in the 'loss' column whether you protect them well or not; and often your success is measured in what you don't have to do (i.e. Incident Response or Forensics) rather than what you do.
I started listening to a lot of 'local' bands - folks within a few hours of where I lived that I couldn't ever get to as far as their shows, but bought their albums - many only EPs sold directly from the bands. I'm grateful for that.
When I was considering a job there; I did a lot of research on their website and was also directed to sites and blogs regarding ex-patriates, and also State Department employees adjusting to life in the United States after being overseas for many years at a time - things like where to drive, and going to the market not being three or four stores but one giant Wal-Mart smack dab in the middle of town. Also, make use of all the job-search websites out there - monster.com, computerjobs.com, ajb.org, etc. I'll leave the rest of the research to you but these have helped me just adjusting from one *town* to another.
on par with the discussion of virtual celebrities; this was a character in a cartoon series who actually had a couple albums produced - unlike cartoon caricatures of real music stars.
Let's not forget William Gibson's Idoru, either.
until you come across a hungry thief!
I can see it now - they come back and hit you with your laptop box (after fencing the laptop) because they were just looking for a snack.
I don't think anyone has commented on how relevant or irrelevant a certain country's natives are in the overall scheme of things. Most of the data I've seen is how many estimated dead per island or country. It is to be expected that Nationalities would be indicated in the tolls.
I have friends that are ex-patriates; and my best friend's mother-in-law works overseas. It is very relevant for some people; but doesn't take away from the worldwide tragedy. While the America-bashing continues; I'd like to point out several of the stories about very young children and the subsequent stories where distant relatives have gotten to them so they would not be permanently abandoned.
email me at my hotmail account with the email you'd like to get the gmail invite sent to. I have a few left after getting my whole family accounts (I am the oldest of seven so you can only imagine)...
I know a lot about hardware and network work; but because my current job is security related, I have a perfect out - I just wave my hands across each other in that 'negative' motion and say I don't do any real tech support work anymore so I can't help.
Oh; I don't think it will take the whole pie though I guess it came out like that. I think they don't care when they release because their game will lack the monthly fee; which is one of the biggest factors influencing MMO purchasing decisions - I mean, most people are only going to pay for one game at a time.
I don't think it is a coincidence at all. There are several subscription games vying for our attention - and I think Guild Wars is going to beat them all to death with one of their skull-shaped hammers because of overall money saved.
I won't pay money to preview games - the idea being that I preview FOR FREE before PAYING for a game I like. Thus, I'll wait for hours to get the download - but have it finished in 20 minutes on my broadband connection. If I don't get an Open Beta slot; I won't play the game unless I see my other friends playing and I like what I see.
I think Blizzard will be ready - game servers are usually not maintained by the game company themselves - they will patch and put content; but there's usually another team that does the servers. I have no idea what the technology will be behind the game; but I would not be surprised if it were butterfly.net's tech - I have a strong suspicion that Guild Wars is using their tech. [one disclaimer: I don't work for them; but butterfly.net is/was a few months ago headquartered in Martinsburg, WV where I live. I'm particularly fond of technology companies coming to my state.]
I've heard of hemorraghing from EverQuest - but it could be for a number of reasons - Star Wars just released their space expansion; Guild Wars' closed beta is free and accessible for pre-orderers; EQ 2 is coming out soon; and Dark Age of Camelot has a new expansion that is gorgeous. [2nd disclaimer: I have friend(s) that work for Mythic; and no I can't get goodies from them.]
The EQ hemorraghing could be from players finally fed up with Sony's customer support; as several SW and EQ players I know quit for that reason alone.
I haven't heard of a loss of Dark Age players.
It may take a couple hundred years to get there; but there's bound to be a group of people eager to go on a long-term mission to this place - bring some kids along and make sure things are mixed up enough so the babies aren't West Virginians after a generation or three - and report back when they get there.
I know it's a lot more complicated than that, but we should. (and I'm from WVa so I'm not really being mean)
You, and that other frogtard out there that espouse the virtues of 'white worms' every single bleeping time a virus or worm makes it on CNN, suck. I'll avoid further commentary because I really don't want my post to be rated flamebait.
First things first. As several other posters have rightfully indicated; competent system administrators will do what they can to mitigate malware outbreaks.
Strong, zero-tolerance acceptable use policy for Internet and e-mail will mitigate most virus issues. Yes, I said zero tolerance. It disgusts me that people would 'just want to see what it looked like', or deliberately jack their workstation to get to play instead of produce, or feel that they should not have to exercise common sense when performing daily work activities - "my IT person should be preventing these from ever arriving so if I open them it's not my fault". This will not happen - the competent admin will do their best; but the antivirus updates and system patches may not always be there in time.
I still cannot comprehend why anyone with even a fraction of IT experience would condone PATCHING WITHOUT TESTING. Fool. Any single one of us has horror stories about applying a hotfix or patch and then struggling to get it to work right or roll the system back because it fried a critical company application. Entire books; entire industries have sprung up around the phenomenon of not thinking - uhm, testing before you patch. This is common for non-security updates - remember ODBC and Jet database engine fiascos? I sure do. DLL protection my left... eye.
Finally, anyone that supports the 'white worm' concept, even on controlled internal nets, needs to examine the path that lead to their support and then burn it clean. Nachi taught us that releasing a worm that spreads the same way as the malicious version WILL cause as much damage - by crashing systems, hammering network devices, breaking applications that have not been tested with the patch, saturating bandwidth... often causing more damage than the bad worm it is trying to fix. Secondary to that, the worm intended to fix runs the risk of being modified and used for 3V1L itself.
Alright that wasn't "meant" to be flamebait. I would love a product like that and in keeping with mine and my wife's philosophy regarding flatscreen televisions and a new hot tub; when the price is right I'm all there.
that none of you are finding the CERT recommendation because it is not on their public sites. There are some CERT websites and mailing lists that you have to be a member of a CIRC or Incident Response Team, etc. in order to have a subscription.
Fruitf*cker 5000 anyone? The CD slot in his mouth might not be all that funny, but incorporating a real juicer would be.

That would be much larger than 7+ pageviews.

I totally walked past the birthday part. Do you have to belt out "Yahoo...oooooh" to get the scoop?

Yes - the act of changing prices on products is illegal in and of itself; in most places it is considered the same as shoplifting.

This is what Snow White did to the dwarves??

Uhm, excuse me. Yes, Batman has some personality and behavior disorders. But; I've never read any comic in which he killed.
I once sent all the day's slashdot headlines to a coworker's Blackberry so he could read them on the subway headed back to work from a meeting...

I looove graphics and games and drool over any good displays... but I could buy like two Alienwares for that kind of dough.
