1. You know... on ICANN OKs Tiered Pricing for .org/.biz/.info · · Score: 1

There should be some sort of way to report squatters to ICANN or such; that's one of the biggest annoyances I have on the Internet; fuck squatters and their tricky ways of getting new cars.

On topic to the article, I think that there should be more uniformity instead of a "we'll decide the price on what we think is right." Reason being is let's say Walt Disney wishes to purchase a .org domain - I think ICANN would charge them a larger sum of money than they would a small business they never heard of - even if it was for the same domain.

Is ICANN really still a non-profit organization?

  2. Mitnik on How Do You Punish a 16-year-old Spammer? · · Score: 1

I'd say do a bit of Mitnik's punishment on him; disallow him to use the Internet for a period of time (perhaps 7 weeks along with his "7 days" e-mail?). I would presume that he'd have to use the computer at least (not necessarily the Internet) for homework and such, being he is only 16.

I also would make him spend that time doing community service. Maybe he'll find something else to do instead of spamming his ex-employer[s].

  3. Weird Al on Weird Al Says 'Don't Download This Song' · · Score: 1

  4. Nintendo on The Console War Is Not Good For Gaming · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is why I stick with Nintendo. Honestly, they aren't going away anytime soon. Sony, I think, will be the first to go if anyone. I was very much saddened when I heard Sega was dropping out of the hardware race (although I hope they return at some point).

Is it just me or does anyone else want the days to be like the old Nintendo/Sega rivalry where most games came out for both systems where the only real differences were the controller shape, button layout, and the small number of proprietary games (ie - Nintendo's Mario and Sega's Sonic)

  5. Let it Die on Microsoft Flubs Patch, Putting Users At Risk · · Score: 1

Honestly, Internet Explorer 6 is like a bridge falling apart that Microsoft is attempting their best to keep above water.

At least they have Internet Explorer 7 coming out (although that'll horribly mess up practically every website, as many of us have had to make CSS sheets for all browsers and then a separate one for IE6).

Just let IE6 die already... get IE7 out ASAP (but after Christmas, etc. please as to not mess with ecommerce too much).

  6. I agree on The Tale of Wal-Mart, Jack, and Bully · · Score: 2, Insightful

I actually agree with this. I wouldn't necessarily allow a kid to preorder a game that might be rated M or above (unless it was named 'Elmo's Adventure' or the such). Similar to movies, I wouldn't want a young kid to get a R or higher rated movie just because when the preorder was out it was "unrated." At least they finally take the ESRB seriously for what they were created for.

  8. Stress? You mean angst on IT Workers Face Dangerous Stress · · Score: 1

I currently have a summer co-op as an IT intern. I have to say that yes, the IT personnel at the company I am working at are quite touchy, grouchy and don't necessarily enjoy doing anything work-related (I hear them curse alot throughout the day). I, though, simply help the people (and take my time doing it as I am paid by the hour) and then explain to them what went wrong and how I fixed it (so that perhaps they can fix it themselves if it goes wrong again). I feel that IT should just take things easy and slowly instead of trying to have everything done perfectly and swiftly (this causes major stress, headaches and bugs; believe me). I think that IT personnel need to be equipped with vibrating chairs and white noise machines. This way, no one gets angry ;)

  9. Based on PS3 Predicted to Lead Market Through 2011 · · Score: 1

This entire study, obviously, is based on simply the PS2/XBOX/GameCube sales. The GameCube was not selling so hotly, although I have to admit I love mine to death. They simply took the numbers and speculated the growth based on them and the current view of kids in the market (currently, it's the 'PS2 is awesome' because they are idiots). I think that since these guys aren't in the industry, though, they shouldn't necessarily have a ground to speak on.

I swear, idiots using old data on almost unrelated consoles (except backwards compatibility).

  10. TechTV, I miss thee on What Actually Happened to TechTV? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Like most of you, I never did have G4 (until now). When I first got satellite television, I found TechTV (around 1999, so right after their name change).

The Screen Savers, by far, was the best TV show on air. Call for Help, as well, was very nice, along with Extended Play.

Later, I eventually saw the ads and small blocks demonstrating G4TechTV (an intermittent name). They had The Screen Savers, still, but also added shows such as Cinematech (which can be good, sometimes), Arena (sometimes good, usually bad, though), and Brainiac (pretty funny and it's educational!). I thought it was going to be neat to have a few more game-oriented shows.

What I didn't realize, though, was that G4 eventually took over TechTV entirely - I was thinking "what happened to the name 'G4TechTV', and why is it now just 'G4'?"

Now, they completely ruined The Screen Savers before killing it (providing us with teen-oriented script kiddie hosts) and redubbing it The Attack of the Show (seems like their naming committee spent all of their funds on hookers and booze, like the Microsoft game console naming committee).

To be brutally honest, G4 is the worst thing to ever hit the airwaves regarding nerds/geeks - it makes us look bad. Not all of us are porn-obsessed, Star Trek-watching, constant gamers that never leave their mother's basement in fear of not having G4.

For them to have a half-decent network, I would recommend reworking the entire channel - bring back all of the TechTV shows, perhaps rip out the so-so or bad ones, and adding in the only good G4 TV shows.

I miss my TechTV. I miss my nightly The Screen Savers block.

  13. WoW = You Fail on World Of Warcraft Crushing PC Game Industry? · · Score: 1

I have seen, for a fact, that WoW is not only a bad game (very repeticious, boring, time-consuming), but also leads to the point of putting off other things just to play it and waste time on it.

For example, a date with a gal - no, sorry, you have to play WoW. Another example would be one of my friends in my dorm last year - he played WoW and literally stayed up entire nights just playing - not even achieving any goals, but just standing around. He eventually ended up with a GPA around 1.0 that quarter - 'nuff said.

wxWidgets (for C++ or for Python) is a great GUI toolkit - the learning of it is a bit harsh, though, as there isn't a great booklet of tutorials or how-to's; mostly, you're left to fend for yourself.

We attempted going through a variety of troubleshoots and I figured the drive was dying, since we reinstalled drivers and it still was unable to read the disk.

At the last minute before I was about to say "Screw it", she happens to mention that she doesn't have a DVD-ROM drive... only a CD-ROM drive - it almost made me want to slam my head into the desk.

She then had the mind to ask me how she could upgrade her CD-ROM drive into a DVD-ROM drive... making me weep to myself. I assisted her in finding a new DVD-ROM drive and told her to have a nearby friend install it.

I thought Darwinism was supposed to fix most of these problems.

They went along to mention to us that the Microsoft products would still be available for "discount prices," although they failed to mention any such prices.

Apple, like any other company, wants to protect their source, but you can't modify or let alone recompile it; and it costs you quite a bit to purchase, too. It's really starting to bother me that companies currently are hindering and annoying their legal purchasers instead of harming the pirates (such as Sony's Rootkit fiasco or Window's very annoying activation)
