  1. Re:This could backfire on Class Action Complaint Against RIAA Now Online · · Score: 1

As for "shutting them down", I seriously doubt it will be that drastic - a win here would definitely start pushing things in the right direction, but this is civil law, not sports. As for "if they win, we are screwed", as above it wouldn't be that drastic either, it would push things in the other direction. However - and IANAL, just a criminal justice/IT student, I'm willing to bet that if it started looking like the RIAA was going to start winning, it could be withdrawn. (the RIAA cannot withdraw it if it looks like they're going to lose, because they didn't file - that doesn't stop the other, plaintiff party, from withdrawing) Legal crap like this is never so clear cut - it's usually just a big goatfuck no matter what side your on - the only winners are the lawyers.

This doesn't change anything really - colleges have been acting as an enforcement arm for the RIAA for years now. Here at RIT they've almost admitted as much - students are told straight up that RIT will give the RIAA the names of anyone they ask for, no subpoena or court action required. It's hard to blame the colleges themselves though, when the RIAA has the FBI and DOJ their enforcing too.

The worst that can happen is the project dies or it's dead and nobody responds. (full disclosure - my brother made/runs/writes the windows package manager (http://www.winpackman.org)) - It is tough, and slow, especially when attempting to do it right (not a criticism of anyone), but windows installers tend to throw crap everywhere, especially into the far reaches of the registry. That is one of the goals of the winpackman, to organize the files a little better and provide an undelete function. That being said, Winpackman is still pretty early in development, after some problems with GTK and some messy installers, there has been a total rewrite (the first version had a HORRIBLE GUI). Btw - not to jump on the "criticize Slashdot bandwagon", but about 6 months or so ago I submitted an eerily similar story about our Winpackman. I'm not mad at slashdot, it's just kinda creepy. haha

"bloggers" aren't from the moon, and neither are the people buying your ridiculously over priced products. You might wanna think about that when you're filling out the chapter 11 reorganization paperwork because nobody wants to buy yet another shitty copy of "Snow White". Then they sit around with volunteer parents and watch the clips and give their rating based on that. Yes, we all know this is bullshit, some of these games have 100 hours of content and they are basing the entire game on a 20 minute video clip, not to mention how easily everything can be taken out of context when you take it out of the story.
