Well, that's where they're doing the human trials, though I can't imagine how they could be doing this so fast... maybe the clinical trial system is different is Spain.

  2. NOT published or peer-reviewed! on Compound From Olive-Pomace Oil Inhibits HIV Spread · · Score: 2, Insightful

None of the news blurbs about this research mention any sort of publication associated with these findings (for example: "published in this week's issue of Science", etc.). Also, a quick search in pubmed for garcia-granados shows limited publications in specialist journals, nothing nearly as flashy as this olive-oil HIV thing. My guess is they haven't published yet, or even had their paper reviewed yet. Most respectable journals embargo press releases until the issue of the journal comes out in which the findings are reported. This could certainly be interesting, but for now I would take it with a grain of salt, especially the part about "the use of olive-pomace oil can produce an 80 per cent slowing down in AIDS spreading in the body." WHAT body?? There's no way this treatment is in human clinical trials. This statement is pure baloney. Judging from their publication record, the Garcia-Granados lab is purely an organic chemistry/biochemistry lab. I seriously doubt they have any data with mammalian models.

Wow, that totally missed the point. You think "cost" only means money. I agree that money should not be the only factor (even a factor at all) when it comes to keeping our environment clean. But you spectacularly missed the whole point. How much ENERGY does it cost to run recycling operations? It all costs ELECTRICITY and if that electricity is being generated by burning fossil fuels, then you have to seriously evaluate the net benefit of recycling. Clearly, it's been shown that recycling paper back to paper, plastic back to plastic, and metal back to metal is net beneficial in that less waste is generated overall (though you're incredibly naive if you think no waste was generated in the the energy it took to run that recycling plant). If you think recycling is some kind of magic bullet that only costs money and not energy, then you need to go back and learn about the laws of thermodynamics. So, to sum up, la-de-da for the Swiss, and go back to remedial physics.

  8. Too good to be true? on Giant Microwave Turns Plastic Back to Oil · · Score: 0, Redundant

How much energy does it take to run that "microwave" to convert some plastic back to usable hydrocarbons? It's presumably powered by electricity...and where did that electricity come from? Most electricity around the world comes from the consumption of fossil fuels. If this process could be linked exclusively to alternate energy sources, like solar or wind, etc., then it might be a net positive thing.

Somehow I have little confidence that this school "deserves" its loan forgiven. How can they be so irresponsible as to not keep track of this hardware or any paperwork associated with it? And why does this "oh we can't find the paperwork" crap only come up now rather than all those other times they requested loan deferrment? In the end I guess it would be wise for IBM to let this one slide, in the hopes that it would be good for publicity. But it's not like they make that many low end PCs anymore, so what kind of advertising value are they going to get out of this? I'm not sure any school could afford IBM infrastructure. Maybe the district?

You know, some times I just have to say the hell with the mods. FUCK YOU. I don't go out and fucking belittle something you've dedicated your life to just because you don't agree with me. I am a Ph.D. working in biology...nothing related to global warming or climate change or whatever you "plebeian" wants to call it. Here's a thought, I won't clump you in with a group of stupid retards who can't add 2 + 2 if you won't characterize all scientists as "petty" or "ideological" or "superior" with their "preconceived notions" designed to "maximize future research grants". It's incredibly infuriating and insulting to hear you say that. As a postdoc I get paid barely enough to support a reasonably modest lifestyle in a relatively expensive area, all because I truly believe I can discover something that will enhance the collective knowledge of the human race (and maybe even contribute to human health concerns). How DARE YOU make such a broad statement about scientists. Try taking a stab at sports starts or celebrities... apparently you "plebeians" value them much more. Ever take a fucking aspirin you high-and-mighty ass? Know someone who's had cancer? Of all the professions, I can't believe you'd suggest people get into science to get rich or spend years of arduous training to push a personal ideology. Apparently its much easier just to subscribe to Slashdot and post flamebait. Nice work.

To be fair, it is a big deal, a whole OS, and might be worth that much in certain markets. If it's not worth that much, they should alter the pricing. Trying to price something based on how much development and resources (and legal costs) went in to it is pointless. I would say most people are not interested, for example, in GM's labor union woes when trying to figure out if that American car is really worth all that much money in comparison to that Japanese car.
