    Run a Windows VM so their system sees what it wants to see and you can use Debian all day long. That's what I do. Occasionally I even need Outlook to do stuff that doesn't work in Thunderbird.
    I virtualized the corp installation with VMware Converter and run it under VirtualBox so I can run it remotely via X/NX, I have snapshots, I can rsync the disk image to the big server etc.

    Shannon only proved that those codes exist. Hamming gave the first examples. So it's fair to say that Shannon was about information theory, not coding theory.

    i365 signed a contract. That was the due diligence.

    So if you don't get your data back, you sue them and they go bankrupt. Some protection. Sounds just as good as cloud computing to me.

    The right way to do this license the Altera IP and integrate it closely with the CPU. Then the CPU could use it in normal operation, for floating point for example. You have various programs and every time you try to access one that's not in the FPGA an interrupt is generated.
    Almost like in the good old days of WCS.

    All you need is a library that gives you worker threads, queues and synchronization primitives. We've all learned that stuff at some point (and forgot most of it.)

    Lidar. Cops use it every day except that they don't have 2D spatial resolution because they only need one dot to do a Doppler measurement and get your speed.

    NT was a rewrite of the kernel but the userland code was ported from Windows 9x. It was called Wow for Windows-on-Windows: Old windows code running on newfangled Windows NT.

    What often helps in those cases is Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in (yeah it may take a minute or two), or ssh in from another system, and kill the offending process.

    No worry. Crude will be above $100/barrel, sustained, in a few years and everybody will wake up.
