My point being I was able to find a solution to my windows problem far, far easier than I was able to find a solution (which I never found, BTW) to my Linux problem. If I have to *dig* to find my Windows solution, I can guarantee that grandma won't be able to do it. And if I can't find a solution to my linux issue, then that same user won't be able to get far with linux. Am I saying linux is broken? Nope. I'm saying that it is not as user friendly as Windows. At least with Windows, you can do simple Google searches to find resolutions to *most* problems.

Do you honestly believe that using Google searches to find solutions to Windows problems is any easier than doing so for Linux. You've just taken two hardware specific problems that have no real solution in Linux (Vendors fault) and based your whole argument on them.

Comments like this piss me off. "I cant do something in Linux that I know how to do in Windows! Linux must be broken!". Just from reading your comment I can see that you obviously have a good amount of experience installing Windows and very little installing Linux. Vista aside (as I have little experience in installing it), the major Linux distro's have a much better chance of installing without incident than Windows. Just because you know what drivers you need to download from the various vendors sites to get your hardware running doesn't mean that someone with no experience in installing either OS would be able to.

For example: When I install Windows XP on my PC, I need to install the SATA raid chipset drivers prior to the install. Once Windows is installed my USB ports do not work correctly. To correct this I need to patch Windows up to a least service pack 1 and download the chipset drivers for my motherboard. I also notice that I have no sound, guess I better go download some drivers for my sound card. You see where I'm going with this?

I never have to do any of this to get my Linux installs operational.

I hate dual booting and buying a console seemed like the obvious solution to fulfilling my gaming and Linux needs. Unfortunately, while I love my Wii, PC gaming is just too good. I tried Cedega for a while, but poor performance, problems with the graphics in most newish games and the arcane incantations required to get said games running makes this a worse option than dual booting. Games like Unreal Tournament 3/4 and Quake 4 which run beautifully on Linux give me some hope for the future which otherwise looks grim for the Linux gamer.

    1) I got sick to death of having to run CD burning software with sudo.

Last time I checked Windows XP doesn't come with full featured CD burning software. Even using Nero as an example, you're only able to burn CD's as an administrator unless you enable rights to burn with non-admin accounts. Also this "problem" can be easily fixed.

    2) A lot of software I as a .NET hobbyist like is simply not there.

...and my toaster can't be used as a floatation device.

    3) I hate to say it, but Windows XP actually runs consistently faster under load on my laptop than Ubuntu. The GUI in particular is more responsive under load than GNOME or KDE.

My PC is pretty quick so I've never noticed any real speed differences between WinXP, GNOME or KDE but I guess it's probable that there are. However, although I'm not an Ubuntu user I'm pretty sure that it uses GNOME exclusively and that if you want KDE you have to use Kbuntu or whatever it's called. So which are you using? Surely not both.

    4) Things like easily configuring wireless connections really do work out of the box better on Windows XP than they do in Linux.

I'm not going to touch this one as I have no experience with wireless setup under linux. It hardly seems fair to blame linux for lack of third party driver support though. I tend to buy stuff that I know is going to work on multiple OS's but if you already own a laptop and your wireless card isn't supported I guess you're boned.

    5) Windows has far more good software options.

    So does linux.

Personally I'd like to see Debian (as it currently exists organisationally) collapse entirely, and for the codebase to be adopted by Ubuntu, or other projects which will hopefully be run by people who are not so interested in dominating others.

How the hell is Debian collapsing going to help Ubuntu? Ubuntu already uses the Debian codebase. If anything Debian collapsing would hider Ubuntu. Your comment makes no sense.

A lot of my friends play WOW and justify paying their monthly fee by repeating the same old excuses such as, "We get new content all the time" or "It improves the quality of the servers so I don't get lagged". Arenanet seems to be supplying me new content fairly regularly and I never experience any lag. Seems to me like Arenanet is just being halfway decent to its customers and it's because of this that I will more than likely purchase the upcoming expansion which incidentally is not required for me to continue enjoying this game.

I believe the reason the horse armor issue has pissed people off is because this is exactly the kind of content that older gamers have traditionally been given in patches and free modules or plug-ins. Now they want to charge us for it.

I can't understand the mentality of people who support subscription models or would pay for trivial content that should really be free. If this keeps up we'll have to pay for patches. Companies like Blizzard and Bethesda can only milk our wallets as long as we let them.
