I would like to point out that this is the same country where homosexuality wasn't decriminalised till 1993. It was in and around the same time before it became legal to sell playboy in the shops.
Thankfully the church here in Ireland doesn't hold the same sway it used to but we're still 95% Roman Catholic. The counrty is progressing and has gone from a third world country in the 1980's to one of the richest countries in Europe today. The country has tried take huge steps to come around to the idea that it is better to let people say things you don't like than make everyone think the same way. Every now and again the will conservatives win one though.
I am not particularly interested in whether porn sites can sell wares under an IE domain but this issue is the true test of free speech. I take hope in the idea in this fast evolving soceity these incidents are becoming less common.
It seems that they are using a varient on a EEG BCI which relies on what's called the P300 or oddball response. I've seen it implemented for things like a wordspeller. An eeg cap is placed on a subject. A series of letters are flashed up on a screen. When the subject sees the letter they want the P300 spikes and the system picks that letter. The problem I see in using this for what DARPA want is that the P300 will spike when you notice a picture of someone who looks sorta like your target (no real p[roblem there). It will also spike when you see someone who looks sorta like you brother, or mother or dog or your great aunt Ida becuase of the that huge boil she use to have on her nose.
To be honest, I'm not listening to the guy anymore. It used to be that my blood would boil at the sight of his name but he's made a complete arse of himself in the last year or so. Although people still print what he says I'm quite sure it's just because he's one of those publicity train wreaks you can't help but watch.
Most people on the conservative side of the game violence argument have relaised he's a nut and don't want him representing their opinions any more than we want to listen to his lunatic rantings.
Has anyone considered that regular joe soap computer (windows) users might be put off by using software called (The) Gimp. I use it all the time now but before I switched of to linux on my desktop I would have assumed it had somthing to do with a prono site.
Although, Joe Soap: "I went looking online for some porn and I ended up a photo journalist. I'm so confused."
The answer is no. I'm also not looking to be shouted at here. I'm not a creationist.
You can't really prove things as scientific fact. It's the nature of the game. There's a lot of evidence to support the theory but nothing to prove it. If you ever get a chance to read up on some of the philosophy of science, it's very interesting. As a researcher myself I like knowing the limitations of what we understand to be science. That is a great way to understand your area.
This guy was able to hold a prominent position in the government? Only a day ago we were discussing how this guy was trying to influence NASA's output for a political end and now we find that the people who put him in the job weren't smart enough to do a background check. If you've ever been in poltics this is Lesson #1. Before you put someone in front of a camera to represent you, you make sure of their job credientials.
It's bad enough that a 24 year old was trying to tell NASA what to do but he never even graduated college. Whoever gave him that job should be fired along with him.
On a more personal note, Serves you right you dozy eejit.
It's the unbridled passion for doctrine that has misled so many into viewing science as a threat. Being a christened (now wayward) catholic the doctrine of papal infallibiity has always intriuged me. They just made up a rule to say, that a guy, elected by a bunch of old guys, can make a statment under the correct circustances, and that statment is true. no matter what. You have to give them credit for the ego. I think this kind of man-made doctrine contradicts everything religious belief is supposed to be about.
Dog Cow's comments are a little harsh for my tastes. Don't call people idiots unless you're willing to take to time to prove them idiots. Although I disagree with Bob I won't insult him for it.
The God of the Gaps is not acceptable to the faithful unless the Gaps are all of existence.
I find this belief to only be held by the religious extreamists. Those whose opinions I have opposed and berated on numerous occaisions. We can't brand all religious belief under a term of ignorance.
As this is antithetical to the scientific view, science is antithetical to religious belief.
Science and religion are not mutaully exclusive. People can keep their religious belief and their science seprate but some of the worlds greatest scientists have had god to fill the gaps science couldn't without any ethical or moral dilema. Those who belive science disolves the need for religion and spirituality in the world are as misguided and the people this article gives out about. You don't have to believe in anything but that doesn't mean all those with faith in something are as cole minded as the extreamists.
You're right. It's everytime I read an article like this I just get annoyed for more than one reason. History has shown repeatedly that this kind of thinking has slowed the rate of human advancment but I'm pragmatic enough to accept that there's very little we can do about it. The ignorance mongers will always be there.
Another reason for my annoyance is that, although my beliefs are nothing to shout about, I have a huge respect for people of faith. I have had the greatest pleasure in my life to discuss hundreads of issues with good and wise people of many different creeds. I do believe that religion can be a great teacher and guide and I have seen it save lives. It's not for many people (possibly me included. the book's not closed on what I believe yet) but when I see it perverted to promote such an ignorant outlook on the world around us it undoes the good works of so many.
Sorry about the wee rant. Kinda strayed away from NASA there but I needed to get that out.
Don't NASA have enough to deal with. Any good scientist will tell you that science cannot disprove the existence of God or gods no matter what you discover. Even with the heretical writings of Galileo and Copernicus freely available to all ~90% of the worlds population still believe in a higher order of sprirtuality. There are many reasons to force NASA to do things differently. Religion or ideology should never, ever be those reasons. When will the hardcore religious faithful who try to influence these things realise that science poses no danger to their beliefs. Their actions only perpetuate a growing distaste for religious involvment among so many people worldwide.
The idea that congress believe they have a 'high horse' to judge anyone else from is laughable. The market in China is so vast the if anyone had refused to conceed to the demands of that govenment, congress would soon be griping about the loss of possible tax income and branding that company communist. NEWS FLASH: American House of Representatives Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Disorder.
Unfortunatle it only counts as entrapment if the offer is made by a member of a law enforcment agency. Funny thing though technically if it's illegal to sell the stuff I would assume it's illegal to buy it so the microsoft investigator committed a crime too. If I were to buy illegal narcotics from someone and then tell the cops about it I would most likely be done for possession.
These are the things I think about when I should be working. Ho hum.
Yesterday I was asking why people get so worked up over dupes and today I experienced a glimmer of rage on the sight of this story especially since it is still in the older suff section on the front page.
Went away quickly though. What are you people doing to me?
I'm for it, if that's the case. Spelling and me never really got on. Maybe I should post in irish. The conversation would be lacking but very few would notice how crap my spelling is.
You're right but some people take it so seiously they nearly threaten lives over it. It's the extreame way in which some people react which confuses me.
I may be asking for it here but I always wondered this. I've been reading/. for years but only recently started posting and my question is, why do some people get so angry about dupes? They can be a bit annoying, yes but I've read some really horrible and insulting remaks to the editors in the past because of dupes. I mean people seem furious. It's like the editors kicked their children and stole the ice-cream while delivering the household bills.
Have I missed something that makes this crime so heinous.

I don't see it going far.

Time for a new hobby Jack!
Can the moderators forgive me for not saying anything of value but:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! pull the other one.
"Google awarded patent on time." It was really only a matter of google!
Jimbo: I plan to burn them all in a stalinesque purge of glory. Interviewer: Isn't that a bit much? Jimbo: Everyone's got a hobby.

And hey, It would have only taken 50 milliseconds to look at yesterdays news :).
Honestly I'm surprised they stuck with Pentium brand for so long. It's was kinda starting to feel like police acadamy movies.
