Does the Windows Media Encoder now offload part of the task to the graphics card? I know that the WMV9 renderer can take advantage of a GPU during playback, but I don't know if it can for encoding.
Well, had I not opened slashdot, I wouldn't have seen this story informing me of how I can be more productive. So in essence, slashdot had made me more productive!
Hey, as far as I'm concerned, leaving an empty shelf at the bottom as slack is still planning ahead. It's the people that pack everything in completely tight with no room to spare that I don't get.
Dispense with this tedious alphabetizing stuff, which will force you to open up space between existing books whenever you muy [sic] something new.
Or you could plan ahead and leave 1/3 of each shelf empty for expansion. I'm always amazed that people rarely leave any room for expansion when they rearrange or reorganize a collection (books, CDs, filing cabinets, etc).
This is the attitude of someone who says, "I showed up. What more do you want?" Her actions show that she is actually trying to get the students to learn something, which is a mindset sorely lacking in today's educational system in the states.
Hmmmm. If only some highly organized groups of people would tackle this problem, then there might be a few possible solutions. I guess that's just wishful thinking...
You should be able to pick up a passive video cooling kit for your card for about 20-30 bucks. They're basically heatpipe/bigass heatsink combos, with some including memory heatsinks, too. The one I put on my card certainly made a big difference, as it got rid of that super-whiny tiny little fan that was on there.
In the case of the newish Dell that's sitting under my desk, it's because it would have required that they actually put an AGP or PCI-E slot on the mobo, and then populate that slot with this $50 card. Or they could go the route they did and integrate the Intel Extreme graphics chip for about the cost of the AGP slot alone.
Sounds good. Anyone know what sort of performance we can expect from one of these? Preferably in the form of a comparison to mid-range cards of years past (I used to have a Ti4200, now running a 9800AIW). I realize it'll have support for newer technologies (DX9/10 support, for instance), but some sort of frame of reference could be handy.
Probably what happened, true. But she also failed to click the 'submit' button on the web form, so that information was never transmitted or saved. I'm amazed she managed to print out a copy, though.
Oh, I feel for you. Just over the weekend I received an email from a user of an online peer-review system I maintain. It seems she managed to put together her 12 page review and print it out, but somewhere in the process of cutting/pasting her comments into the text fields, she deleted her document. (Don't ask how. I tried asking and got some nonsense about how pasting text caused the file to disappear.) So now her review is being mailed to me. Thankfully, scanning and OCRing it is nothing...
And please tell us what portions of the video encoding task are handled by the GPU.

Fastest WinXP notebook for the Photoshop test. It doesn't look like it fared so well in the Windows Media encode test.
the entire aisle is ads.
I fully realize this, which is why I stated that I don't need the extra ads.
As it gets harder to reach people at home, everybody still goes to the grocery store.
And I will make it a point to shop at the stores that don't bombard me with extra advertising as I walk down an aisle.

Of course, if she gets paid either way...

And a really good musician quickly learns how to work around the flaws of a cheap instrument to make it sound good.
You don't. It's really hard.
Ummm. I guess some of us are more capable of sorting through the alphabet or finding the right category than others...

What'd you expect? He's a Windows user...
Here's a link that confirms this!
Options are never bad
Unless they are the only form of bonus or payment you will be receiving from your employer...

Well, of course he wasn't. He had an iPod 3-5 years before anyone else could even think about getting their hands on one...
More like news for noobs
Stuff that flatters?
That's a great idea! My only request is that I get to be an Alpha.

Seriously. It's almost enough to make you think the guys running this country are corrupt or something...
"FBI agents not having e-mail or Internet access is much too much a pre-9/11 mentality."
Funny, I thought it was a pre-1995 mentality.
