The difference between the two is that your 13 year old cousin can't broadcast a video of her dancing to the black eyed peas on national television. The purpose of youtube isn't just another marketing niche, it's a place where members can post anything they want (to an extent) and not have to worry about harassing commercials, or even subtle ones, or the regulation that comes with tv. Sony on the other hand just sees dollar signs and could care less about harming what youtube initially intended for its purpose. If some sort of ethics laws aren't adapted to viral marketing, it may just destroy what youtube and google video established.
My friend is actually doing his undergraduate research on creating a "touchless" interface that uses cameras to recognize gestures so you can manipulate menus and such with only hand movements. So removing the need for a keyboard is coming closer all the time.
Just because the "populous" determines it to "make the grade" doesn't mean that the information presented there is infallible. I'll agree it's a good quick and dirty look-up method, but in terms of academia, it's not looked upon highly at all. I'm not saying that it should turn into a peer-reviewed scientific journal, but there should be people with relevant backgrounds who contribute to this, as well as any Joe-schmoe who wants to contribute as well.
Although some people may see Google as the "bad guy" here, but they are just following suit. Any servers that host stuff like this have an obligation to provide their customers with a medium for free speech of any sort. It starts to get blurry around things like this, but this is really tame compared to other things I have seen. Many people may not have read about this, but there was an article on indymedia about a socialist in Warsaw who was targetted by a group who own a website called www.redwatch.info that actually lists personal information about people who are known socialists like their addresses, phone numbers, pictures, etc. As many complaints as their host has received, they still refuse to do anything about it.
Many people may not know this but the number of genes and amount of DNA that a particular species has does not necessarily correlate to genome complexity. Salamanders have almost 10x the amount of DNA as humans, but the amount of coding DNA is not even close to the amount of coding DNA for humans. Genetics is not that simple. It is interesting though that this organism can pick and choose which genes to express at certain times.
I don't know how many times I have bought an album, and liked a track other than the released single. This may not apply to the poppy throw-away music, but listening to an album in context seems better to me. What do you think Dark Side of the Moon, or The Wall would be like without listening to it all the way through? Either way, artists are getting jipped when it comes to $$$, it all goes to the corporate fat cats.
This seems like it would be such a hassel for anyone actually recording anything to imprint this "flag" on whatever medium they are using, not to mention the headache of whatever hardware manufacturers would have to do to get their products to recognize these flags. It seems like the DRM crap all over again, 1/2 of existing products won't be able to recognize the media, and the other half will only recognize that media. The RIAA needs to actually get in on the conversation instead being so bullheaded about it, and maybe someone will actually take them seriously. Seems like the FCC and RIAA have a deal going on here...
This is the same garbage that the RIAA and MPAA churns out every few weeks to try and scare people into buying worthless music or tickets to bad movies. If a game is appealing enough, it will attract buyers through its publicity or word of mouth. When HL2 was pirated I didn't rush to dl it. I waited til it was out and I bought a hard copy of it because I liked HL and the previews I had seen of HL2. The same with FEAR. The games that I may or may not pirate are crap that won't hold my attention past 20-30 minutes. It's no wonder that a corporation screams bloody murder every time they see the word pirate, because without a scapegoat they would have to blame whoever internally was responsible for the game in the first place instead of looking toward innovative, and creative ideas.
It's not about the tanks leaking. Last year I did a research paper for my Environmental Science class about Yucca Mountain Waste Repository and found some interesting data on radiation contamination in surrounding rocks and water. This stuff still gives off radiation, and these "leak-proof" containters are prone to corrosion after maybe as short a time as 100 years. If this process actually works like he says it does it could drastically reduce the need for sequestering spent nuclear fuel.

There actually is research that right now is proving to be quite usefull against Alzheimer's. An australian team of scientists have located the protein that seems to cause Alzheimer's and are developing a medicine to combat the onset of Alz. Let's hope this leads to the discovery of a preventative treatment.
No one has probably heard of this in the US but there is a website by neo-nazis that posts photos, addressed, and phone numbers of "antifascist activists" called www.redwatch.info
There was a story recently about a man in Warsaw who was beaten and stabbed by some skinheads who got his info off of the website. Pretty messed up.
Was this before everyone found out that the NSA has compiled the "biggest data mining" operationg of anyone using a telephone in the US, excluding Qwest customers?
"A little while later, an older woman with a handful of products walked past me at one point muttering to herself, 'Everyone in this goddamned store is wearing a blue shirt and nobody knows a thing!'"
Seems to me like the employees are about as useless as everyone else.
as much as I hate government regulation (except in the case of capitalism) eBay needs a little regulation since they have been screwing just about every 'customer' they have, not to mention the crap they pulled with something awful's katrina donations.
just because google is trying to expand the market doesn't make them evil, it makes them the good guy. the only reason eBay is scared is because every other auction/pay service site has 1/100th of a percent of the publicity that they have but google has the ability to challenge them. i'm rooting for google on this one.
You have a good point but I think you're looking at too small of a scale. The number one producer of greenhouse gases is coal burning power plants, which run about 85% of the country. True reducing the usage of power would reduce the output, but technology (that exists already) should be implemented to reduce CO2 and CO emissions. Carbon sequestration is also another option to fill in all those empty pockets of crude oil, but is not a permanent solution.
The solar idea is good too, but that is limited to the technology of batteries. There is only so much they can store, plus the whole thing with cloudy or rainy days would not make it feasable to use to power something that must be able to work on demand.
I thought I remembered reading something on slashdot about how biofuels need an excessive ratio of land to the fuel produced, whereas Hydrogen fuel cells run on water and give off oxygen.
The federal government is the agent to mandate it, but the Kyoto Protocol was deemed to be too much of a burdern on our economy (..cough Iraq..cough massive defecit...cough) to implement as well as any other program. All it takes is time, the same thing happened with CFC reduction.
Any 5th grader with the basic understanding of statistics should know that all these studies are flawed. Like everyone else has been repeatedly saying, a positive relation does not always imply the two are related.
Just because the sale of assault weapons is up, and murder by assault weapons is up doesn't mean they are related. Oh wait, yeah it does. Maybe that's what these old farts should be spending their time on. Not Mappy Land vs. Street Fighter

Take that MPAA....and RIAA...and NSA....and every other person who wants my bits.

Who said just because you're the government doesn't mean you can't stab the constitution in the back?
