Today, the limiting factor is creativity, not money.

No, it is still money. How do you get your record on Clear Channel? Get tickets to your show on Ticket Master? Get your record in stores (that no one goes to anyway)? Get people to listen to your album? Compete with the latest and greatest "manufactured" band from LA?

Takes money, and lots of it to get it through the marketing noise.

So this move from lobbies and corporations who felt that TiVo was cutting into their advertising pie, seriously hampered the ability of producers to put out better, cheaper, open devices.

The thing that the advertiser hates is the 30 sec. skip. All Tivos still have the 30 sec skip disabled. To enable it, press select, play, select, 3, 0, select. The Tivo will chime 3 times. Now, when you hit the the key marked ->|, instead of going to the end of the show, you get a 30 second skip. I don't see any indicator that it will go away any time soon, and you don't need backdoors enabled to use it.

I doubt anyone in Hollywood is very realistic in hoping they will get PVRs outlawed anytime soon. That seems like it is just doing what they have to do to defend their copyrights, and copyright lawyers earning their retainer.

Actually, NBC doesn't license any spectrum, other than for the Owned and Operated (O&O) stations. NBC is a broadcast network. They rent transponder space. Before that, they rented a network from AT&T.

And, besides that, none of the stations in the network pay a cent for the right to broadcast 6MHz (now X2) television channels, by far the largest chunk of spectrum out there. They got it for free in exchange for serving the "public intrest."

If I buy something at Walmart using a credit card, the transaction is usually faster than cash, depending on the cashier's ability. Yet, when I go to the small store in the same strip mall and pay the same way, I have to wait for the machine to dial out, authenticate, transmit, recieve, print. Takes forever, and there's always that uneasy feeling waiting to make sure it goes through.

All they really have to do to match you up is follow security cameras' timecode/stamps with the cash in the drawer. Piece of cake. I could even see the Office of Homeland Security or other such agency tracking money this way. I'm sure you had plenty of advice on how to quit, but I'll go ahead and tell you how I did it anyway. First some background... A few years ago a device was introduced that would help you quit based on patterns (you pressed a button every time you lit up) and it would "scientifically" develop a program for you to quit. A friend of mine used it, it didn't work for him, but borrowed it and it almost worked for me. The big thing it did was divide number of times per day you smoke by how many hours you are awake.

When I quit this time, I decided to go on the patch, but before I did, I started counting how many times a day I smoked, then set a timer on my watch to go off when I should smoke. Luckly I had a boss who understood, and it was usually easy for me to get away when the timer went off. I slowly increased the time every day (and decreased the number of cigarettes to just a few a day). Then, on my quit day, I went on the strongest patch I could find. This helped me prepare for the withdrawl, and the constant interuption became another modivation to quit.

The only other thing I'll say is that it really does take 3 months for your body to adjust. I remember saying and doing strange things for weeks after I was off the patch. Later on I realized that it was withdrawl and associated depression, but at the time, I was really freaked out (but suprisingly I didn't make the connection until long after).

The best part was that Saturday morning after the first good night's sleep in years, and the fried rice at the Orential Buffet that was SO good.

Unfortunately, these are all priced far above the cost of nicotine delivered in a cigarette, so only those who can justify the cost as an aid to quitting will use these products.

Walmart had the best prices on patches when I quit. They were almost the same price as the same number of day's cigarettes. With the latest increases in taxes here, I'm sure they are cheaper now.

BTW, I think that these will be a good way to disconnect the habit from the adiction.

Why would a cable company buy this $500-$1000 box, maintain it, warehouse it, and attempt to collect their investment when you take it with you when you move out (and sell it at a flea market for $20).

I tried to roll my own with an ATI all in wonder. It never really worked right - sound being the biggest problem. I couldn't put big fonts on their menu screens, so I had to pick programs on my desktop box using netmeeting remote desktop. Tivo's software works much better.
