That's a pretty neat machine linked to there, the problem with these things is a lot depends on the actual book, you can have super-duper scanner vacuum this and that, but if your book is old and stiff they don't work so well.
You're right about managing the images though, I have been scanning some books recently full colour uncompressed 200dpi tiffs, and a couple of TB later most of the work becomes file management and backup. Scanning is the easy bit.
Doh! I forgot to mention this thing runs Linux, which is why I was reminded of it in the first place. It's basically a PC hooked up inside the scanner.
Slow Down Cowboy!

I get the feeling that is basically what this is: http://www.iiri.com/i2s/copibook.htm it looks a bit home grown, but this is about £25,000 I believe.
If you had kind of framework, a lens with large DOF, 6-10MP sensor could do this on the cheap I reckon. Oh and some skills in processing the resulting image.
Perhaps, but I thought by the subject line you meant the Ogre's from Q1..., which at the time had I think quite a reasonable AI. Well I remember being impressed by the fact they came close, far away used grenades, could 'hear' you would try and track you down.
Of course after playing for a while you see it's pretty straight forward stuff and no real AI at all.
Google has kind of stopped doing this already for some reason, When I find a link to a web page in text form (not hyperlinked) I used to highlight it, right click, Search Google for the address, and google would say "It's looks like a web address, would you like to go there?"/me CLICK!
Now it doesn't and I have to highlight, copy, click new tab, select address bar, paste, click Go.
Actually the sky in GT on the PSX did not reflect off the roof, it only/looked/ like it did. It's was basically another semi transparent texture layer on top of the cars that moved relative to the cars velocity. A smart way to cut down on the GFX processing required. Whether this same trick is used in GT HD or it is indeed a real reflection I don't know. But who cares about details anyway?
I'm glad somebody pointed out this method, it's exactly the method I used. These other methods are totally overly complicated - I don't want to know how much each battery is, I just want to know which one is the best value....
You don't need to pay Murdoch. Buy your own dish and receiver from Maplins, or any place like that, hell I got my 80cm dish, LNB, receiver, from Lidl for 60 GBP. A few bolts in the wall and you have a FTA sattelite system.
Since this is Slashdot, get a receiver with a card slot, a card programmer and start 'testing'. Get a motorised dish more $$$ and your options increase. Too many people in the UK think sattelite TV = Sky. It doesn't.
My headless file server is running xfs and on occasion when I accidentally forgot to shut it down remotely, before switching off my main PC, I have just yanked the cord. Never had any problems. (touchwood)

Instant Heat
and the bread toasted in about 20 seconds. Faster than an electric toaster. OK you need to turn it, but that's no big deal.
"There are 11 types of people in the world, those who know binaries and those who don't."# Uh, who's the third type?
Don't you mean 0.9765625 years old?
1. Contact Orange, tell them to fix it or your giving them the phone back.
2. Upgrade the Firmware yourself, and wipe all the Orange stuff off.
3. Keep taking it from Orange and keep paying them money for a crappy product.
Damn, I meant PING (PING is not Ghost) .
or Parted, is pretty tidy.
I think that covers it, or did you mean something else?
Good point, nicely made.
Right On!, brother
That's about 1.50 GBP which is 8-10 times cheaper than a CD in th UK. As someone from the UK I would say that was cheap.
Now it doesn't and I have to highlight, copy, click new tab, select address bar, paste, click Go.
Now that is a pain in the arse.
In the UK this is what is meant by the term Weetabix (OK technically it's a company that makes all sorts, but that is their namesake)
Well I guess they gotta use Dual Core for something..
Hear Hear, this man speaketh the truth

Not heel and toe, you mean Left foot braking. To see this in action check out this impressive video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on-IRTFam4I
You are wrong.
Yep, I remember this was on TV at least 5 years ago - good to know its the same study. (or not?)
