....BETA? Isn't that what BETA versions are all about...? At least it is labelled correctly. I can see vista being BETA until well past Sp2 and don't get me started on Hardware compatibility!
If the 4th setting above is selected, there are no updates at all, stealth or otherwise. The service is off, and no communication is done with the WU servers.
Actually the service still runs, just the updates don't happen. You can how ever turn the service off in the service manager.
I actually use it on a daily basis and some would think it is bloat, but actually my notebook is a whole lot more responsive, longer battery time (more so than the windows xp that was on it and longer than default window manager) and I also am a whole lot more productive. I can monitor many terminals at once in real time just by the flick of the wrist, very very handy!
I have been playing with Knoppmyth for several years now. I am very impressed with the development it's taken especially in recent times. It has become a very stable platform and all of my Media entertainment is driven by Knoppmyth.
I have a Combined Frontend/Backend and a frontend setup. All I need now is more HDD's and more tuners:-)
I recommend people give it a go and also wish to thanks Cecil and the other guys who spend a large amount of time making this project a reality.
I'll agree with most of your post. It is a all about design and strategies. But I believe the tool is far from perfect and there are far better solutions out there.
It is designed for a small environment with a couple of users. If to be used in a large environment I'd prefer something that can be centrally managed. Like most M$ tools they are very much client based with little in the way of management on the server side.
Vista We'll be leaving alone for a while, to many other things to get up and running before trying to implement an OS that hasn't got it's first service pack yet.
Wish I had more time to go into the specifics. But alas I'm rather busy.
There is a tool that I used to extract the information from the single file it stores all the information in. (csccmd http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884739 )
It is not an appropriate tool for a corporate environment, IMHO
A great solution till it breaks... believe me it does break and when it does be prepared for heartache. There are ways to recover it, but I think it assumes to much and the potential to screw up is a big risk.
There were several users at my place of employment that found out this the hard way and now we ban the usage of it.
It's not so much finding the best tool, but managing the process overall and how to do that.. Well we are still in the process of developing that one!
I don't know about anywhere else, but our local supermarket has something like this already. Soon as you take it past the yellow line painted around the car park the wheels lock up....
I've been playing with Knoppmyth since R5A16 and it has come a very long way since then.
Like any linux distribution, choosing your hardware wisely is the only way to guarantee success. Unfortunately hardware manufacturers are not always supportive enough of oss and there aren't enough capable coders with time to burn to write drivers for every single device.
If you want the bleeding edge, build it from scratch. If you want something to work out of the box, lurk the forums and research before you buy. I have done auto installs that have pretty much worked out of the box.
I have a front end and back end running, both now running the recently released R5F1 and the only issues I've had were the custom tweaks I wanted for myself (LVM, nfs, autofs, different file systems, multiple drives etc etc.)
With whispers on the wind of Windows Vienna (could be speculation, who knows) but this is starting to feel like Windows ME all over again. I for one hated Windows Millennium Edition, it was an orphan operating system, poor driver support and about as stable as a one legged drunken sailor aboard a dingy in the midst of a tornado!!
I pose the question, is Vista just another tide Microsoft over till they release the next real XP Upgrade? Is the public going to be fooled again? I don't know, but I don't forget things that easily and history has a funny way of repeating itself.
I'm quite aware I'm going to have to support it as an operating regardless and it will most likely drive me up the wall just like Windows ME did. But for me personally I will be sticking to Ubuntu for my workstation and Windows XP for my gaming rig (well at least until I can game on Linux.. Yes I'm allowed to dream!).
But that is stepping into the the realms of philosophy, is sound something that exists beyond what we can hear? Because otherwise it's just a bunch of waves bouncing around the joint. Is it only sound by definition when it is heard?
In Australia the Government provides software to do your tax online. I've been doing it like this for the past 3 financial years. It is far easier and explains a lot more then the paper return you fill out. If you have a refund it is deposited into your account within 14 days. The paper "Tax-Pack" is utterly useless in comparison.
The problem is when Joe Six pack comes home on a friday night with a case of beer, couple of mates and a latest release movie, they are going to be mighty pissed off when there player prints "please update your dvd player" or something like it.
Christ, It's not entirely difficult for someone that isn't phased by technology, but I know if I've kicked on my couch on a friday night with a beer, the last bloody thing I want to be doing is getting up, searching for my model of "insert new format player here" downloading the firmware, burning it to a disc, updating it, just to watch a movie I bought/rented.
I'm just gunna stick to DVD for the time being, My mythbox has no trouble playing those!!
<rant> I totally Disagree with you, having windows XP setup like that is a total pain in the arse!! Most of our machines at work run with just user privileges and after using linux for so long it frustrates the hell out of me. Run as admin to install the program, program doesn't work, uninstall, log out, log in as admin, install, log out, log in as user, doesn't work, hunt around, change directory permisions, stand on your head, wait for the wind to change, pray... You get my drift, sure this will partly be the responsibility of the developer, but ultimately for a user space program you shouldn't need admin rights. Thank Windows Registry!! </rant>
Have you set up SPF records for your domain? Hotmail won't receive mail from a domain without one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framewo rk
My own domain has the same issue, but sif I can be assed paying for a spf record... Just don't email people with hotmail accounts!
I've found that dell tech support to be relatively useless anyway! Probably flamebait, but I haven't had a good experience with dell customer support to this day. Hence why i steer clear of them in the corporate environment as it's just not worth the Head Fucks.
It's really that hard? I had to do it just recently, install, initial setup of the client, copy, paste, done... every thing back the way I had it.
Even easier on my Linux installation, keep home folder, reinstall (it happens even in linux, but generally you really have to try to break it, doesn't happen by itself!!), install thunderbird, done.

the smell of flame war in the morning.
Nothing to see here, move along.
As it hovers around the slowly moving creature known as SCO. It's only a matter of time before they will be able to enjoy the fruits of it's death.

Yep, Pretty Archaic to be honest. ZENworks is a much more powerful solution :)

Hahaha Nice. Personally I think that the video is pretty powerful, history does have a way of repeating itself... Vista.... ME?? :P
Touché - Slashdot board meeting? :P

LOL is all I can say!
I mean it is technically infeasible to impose. Specially when you can run a mail server hanging off a home DSL account.
