I have owned a Sansa e200 series player. It is a good music player (sans ogg), and works well with linux as a drag and drop player. It does have its limitations.
Unless you know alot more about mencoder than i do, you wont be using movies on it. You have to convert them to.avi, rotate them 90 degrees, cut them into 10 minute blocks, resize and respeed them.
I loved it, but I honestly don't like having to use nautalis to get music on and off the player. I switched to an iPod due to how many music players in Linux currently have iPod support. What can I say, all hail to the king.
"I would gladly send my kid to this elementary school if they could prove that they could teach concepts like orbital decay and barycenters to to nine-year-olds."
I would only send my kid there if they LEARNED it. I have a feeling they most nine-year-olds would be picking boogers during that class.
Sadly, it is true. None of these faces are going to ship a single product to the mainstream. Now, we all make fun of Bill Gates for that picture of him looking fruity lounging beside a computer from 198x, but hey- he eventually let his wife change his wardrobe.
If we are holding our breath for linux to go mainstream, we darn well better get some plastic faced marketing guy up there trying to preah it, not the programmer. Sad fact of life.
I have played Wesnoth (great game) but at times it is not the same. I nearly did a backflip when I heard spore was coming to the wii since that meant i once again had the option of playing it.
Very few. Dale, the alpha-geek of my office, definitely took a blank pci board and made an interface so his computer could control the thermostat in his house.
I'm pretty sure he could beat my Kung Fu with just his Feng Shui.
I think he was referring to building your computer in the sense of assembling the hardware over buying a dell - even if 'building' a computer is about as hard as putting together legos now a days.
I think you were talking about building an operating system, which is an entirely different ball of wax. You can build a computer and never put an OS on it... even though it would be silly.
Plus, it was in his sig, and I was trying to make a somewhat lame joke.
'A slashdotter who did not build his own computer is like a jedi who did not build his own lightsaber.'
Does that make the Linux / MS debate the lightside vs. darkside thing?
You, sir, deserve a beer. You are correct that Linux needs more boring functionality.
Evolution takes care of my outlook fix, but there are two programs that every bachelor should have and is sorely missing in Linux: TurboTax and Money (or Quicken, but I don't like their GUI).
Now, I understand that GNUCash exists, but lets be frank- it blows chunks. I opened Money as an 18 year old freshman in college and had a balanced checkbook and monthly budget (with a sizeable allotment towards 'beer'). I opened up GNUcash as a 24 year old computer programmer and just thought 'quoi?' That's right... my inner monologue forgot that I'm American, it was so bad.
And the occasional game *that is not Nethack* would be nice...
I'm actually partial to the color scheme in Ubuntu (my choice of distro). I have an asian themed room and the subdued tones mesh very well with the colors of the room. (Using the 'Dawn of Ubuntu' wallpaper, the tree with the faded sky behind it)
I agree Linux is going that way, but familiarity and 'good' looks are the only way to start converting the non-geeks. And there are plenty of nuts and bolts distros.
Eye candy is very appealing to the mainstream user, and will help A LOT to increase Linux's usage and familiarity.
I agree, Linux gives me plenty of games to keep my happy. However, it does get tempting to actually sacrifice 10gb back to the evil empire to be able to play the games all of my friends are talking about at work.
Sure, just like I am seeing lots of gang bangers running around with M1A1s (tank or bazooka, for that matter). Ever been mugged by a guy with night vision goggles?
How many people on slashdot only have one source of internet access anyway. I would imagine most of us have a Lain-style plug into the base of our skull.
You know, I was poking around/. the other day and I heard of this really cool new thing called Linux... I don't really know about it, but it has something to do with penguins and being free... I don't know if that's something you might want to look into or not...

Don't be so hard on yourself. You said the job pays well... that makes you and expensive whore.

Sure, its cool, and it runs Linux, but will it be manufactured in large enough quantities to make it economically realistic?
I doubt it.

Same reason we geeks do half the things we do....
Because we can.
Hey, you can go about building your OS into the new NXTs! : p

All I can say is...
Blindfold?...
Cigarette?
Hey man, you know the rules... it has to be on digg for at least a day or two before it is acceptable for slashdot.
True, but that gives me the gibblies...

I'm not going to hold my breath over FUD.

80 mbs is more than 10 times what i was sold by Cox Cable, let alone probably 100 times what i get.

I still accept blame for my pathetic spelling though.
I'm sticking with my 7am excuse like I did with the previous post. I was only 10 minutes into my coffee.
Indeed. Please forgive the mistake on account of the 7am-ish timestamp.
