I live in the great white North (about 5 hours north of New York City, in Montreal Canada).
In summer, daylight begins at 4am, and sundown is at 10pm. We normally go to bed between 10 and midnight, so we would use CFL lighting for about 2 hours per day. So, air-conditioning benefits would be about 40 watts per bulb, for two hours.
In winter, sunup is around 7am, and sundown is around 4pm. Whatever heat an incandescent bulb does not generate has to come from a furnace, or baseboard heater. So, having 13watt bulbs only means that the baseboard heater has to generate the difference. (Before CFLs and after CFLs comparisons).
The only benefit I have found is a) Higher cost, of bulb and b) Less frequent bulb changes.
For industry, CFLs are great, because of b) above; for the home, don't bother.
Lets look at Spanish and the USA and it's unilingual policy.
Go anywhere, and there are accomodations for Spanish speaking population. Even hospitals, police, and schools.
By 2050, half the USA will be married to Spanish origin people, and Spanish will be the second language. In fact, because of the heavy influence of Spanish in inter-marriage, a new Spanglish language will be spoken.
I have a better idea, as I agree with the author that C is too slow.
Lets all code in assembler, and lets use a virtual machine so that the assembler objects could be run on any platform, except, of course, the real machine for which the virtual one was created.
Ohhh sorry, my computer clock is 4 days fast.
ACTUALLY, all American news media are sloppy and biased. I gave up on any media that uses the wire services af factual.
For North American News, I rely on the BBC.
I never finished high school, but that did not stop me. I entered university as a mature student, having to do the first year at night, while I worked at a job. For the remaining 3 years, I was a full time student, and I loved it. I graduated with honors (Mathematics, physics), and I went to graduate school for more mathematics.
I finished my education at age 30, and felt that it was the best thing I ever did. Why? Because my IQ did not change, but I had three plus years of learning that a non-student did not have, and my list of opportunities was ever so much better then the non-graduate.
Go for it. You will work very very hard, and you will love the time and the effort you put in, and what you will derive from being a late bloomer.
One solution for California is not a global solution. In northern climates, we have winters, and when a black car sits in the sun, it can get quite comfortable to be in, prior to starting it up.
Same benefit with some untinted glass.
In Canada, (Quebec), our electricity is substantially less expensive then alternate forms such as Oil, Natural Gas, Solar, or Wind.
My residential cost is between 4 cents and 7 cents per kilowatt hour. In fact, 80% of Quebec homes are electrically heated.
So, in winter, the heat from the PC adds to the heat from the server rooms, and displaces heat produced from baseboard heaters. With outdoor winter temperatures of -15C or -22F, the building actually requires more kilowatts to sustain human comfort at 21C. Same energy waste rule applies to lighting.
In summer, the reverse happens. The kilowatts of heat from those running (for nothing) PCs have to be exhausted by the air-conditioning. The worst culprit is the LCD display, which consumes many more watts then did the older large CRTs.
The big laugh in Quebec are the energy efficient bulbs, which, in winter save zero kilowatts and in summer, with long daylight hours, are hardly used. It is better for us to use incandescent lamps then these mini-florescent bulbs that cause problems for ground-fill, or are distributed pollutents that the next generation will have to deal with.
In these questions, I noted a pattern. Questions that are irrelevant, and then ones checking for stress, depression, and short fuses.
3,5,7,11,13,14,15 etc.
If you were not depressed, after completing the whole series, I think you would have temporary depression. You would need viagra to pick you up, whoops, I meant valium.
Worse then changing the bios, all CPUs have a trap door that allows redefining some cpu instructions. This redefinition is a vendor method of fixing early versions of a CPU model. We call it microcode for the micro processor.
So, it is possible with that facility, to change a secure instruction to an insecure one.
Big leak.
In elementry queuing theory, one learns that if one has a uniprocessor capable of speed 2x, and a dual processor working at speed x, more efficiency and performance will occur from the single processor.
Extending that to 3 cpus versus 2 cpus, with each sharing the same clocking circuitry, and with separation, the 2cpu environment would outperform the 3 cpu environment.
For quads, you really want to isolate contention. That is, to design new memory management circuitry to eliminate contention, to eliminate interrupt contention, (localized interrupts), and of course a whole new I/O system that is optimized as a multiple server, single queue (like the queue for a bank ATM).
Forget Quad cores for home computers, as the underlying hardware is not ready for it, and as the topic suggests, neither is the kernels for linux and windows 7.
At first I thought it was people that were saved (French Police Save Millions Switching To Ubuntu)
I thought the word by was missing between Millions and Switching. Even so, Millions is not people, but Euros.
It is not hard to beat firefox. FF is loaded with too much crap. That overhead slows it down.
IE does one thing well, it knows to timeout and keep trying to download the webpage(s). Firefox sits and waits, until one hits the refresh button.
Sadly, that bug has never been fixed in FF.
There exists a class of documentation called BPM. What it does is allow you to document processes. It is used in many ERP systems. Interestingly, for each node in the flow chart, there is the ability to have an event, such as time to process.
The ideas therein would be of great use elsewhere.
On the PBS a program indicated that the earth will be warmer by 8C degrees by 2040.
At my age, I don't care, as my life expectancy is lower. So, my generation has left you a legacy.
No crops in the mid-south in all above hemisphere countries (Includes Texas, and the wheat belt), and central Europe.
Of course, there will be progress to use genetics to produce hardier grains.
So we continue the Bush legacy to destroy our future.
We have a similar situation with living in Canada. Executives earn a reasonable salary, and the directors club members have not voted each other unjustifed compensations. (And we have medicare, so you don't go bankrupt with co-pay option)
If every manager reporting to me takes about 15% of my time, and I have 7 managers for whom I have responsibility, should my salary be more then 20 times the average employee salary? What if I was the CEO or CFO, am I worth 600 times the average, plus million dollar bonuses?
Americans, wake up, you are over compensating your CEO / CFO. You allowed the directors of companies to run wild, and in a pack, allowing them to give unjustified raises.
And I bet the guy with 120k per year salary and an MBA and 10 years of experience could do as good a job as that CEO or CFO.
Any bets? (Its that way in the rest of the world, salaries that are not more then 20 times the average of the employees).
Is the current economic crisis and the indiscriminate Intel layoffs and shutdowns to save CASH a factor?
When you dismiss the architects and developers, who is left? (Hr department, thats who).
Linux on it's own will go nowhere. What makes Linux palatable is the large quantity of applications that use it as a host.
To gain widespread use, beyond the database server, or webserver, Linux needs business applications of high quality. For example, Open Office, Firefox, Evolution and Exchange Server, A collaborative software like Lotus Notes or Sharepoint.
Also, what would help would be commercial software (yes, software for revenue) that corporations would feel comfortable in purchasing. Commercial as in Red-Hat, JBoss, Database, ERP systems, etc. all with less then 4 hours response time when a call is made for support.
The 4 hour maximum response time is a must.
Without an initial web browser, how would you install one that would be of interest? So, I see that MS should have a very minimal browser that would offer the option to download the full version, or a competing version. Essentially, a program tailored to one task, installation of another web browser.
I would like to see RFID or Smart Card contactless payment abilities whereever I go. I am afraid of germs, you know, the ones that come from boogers, and the ones that come from identity theft, due to keyboard loggers, cameras capturing keypresses, etc.
How may cardreaders have never seen a wipe or sanitizing of the keypad?
If we go the contactless route, It can be encrypted all the way, initiation to completion of the transaction, and I don't have to touch the keypads at all. (We Canadians prefer debit cards to credit cards, because we see the expense reflected in our bank statement immediately).
I take the underground subway to / from work. Internet does not work well, and seating does not allow the laptop to be open. So, I look forward to printed media.
I have a simple question. In a family of laser printers (brother, HP, other), is the Black toner used within the one family universal, so I may buy an older cartridge version which I know holds more toner at lower cost, and then do a transfer, e.g. Re-manufacture?
We use Sharepoint at work, and it works well with firefox, so I agree, rip out explorer.
However, Microsoft is under no obligation to support foreign browsers. So rather then ripping out the guts, just delete the links

This is an inquiry. What was the electric companies rate per kilowatt hour? How long will it take to recover the solar panel investment, based on a 10 hour day? Am I right, there is no generation of energy from stars after dark?
